Silver Trumpets
10 The Lord also told Moses, 2 “Make two trumpets, crafting them from beaten silver, for use in calling the congregation together and for notifying the camps to set out for travel. 3 Sound them when the whole assembly is to gather together at the entrance to the appointed place of meeting. 4 When one trumpet is blown, the elders and the heads of the thousands of the Israelis are to gather to you. 5 When you sound an alarm, the ones encamped on the east side are to begin to travel. 6 When you sound the alarm the second time, those encamped on the south are to begin to travel. Alarms are to be sounded for their travels. 7 But when you blow the trumpet to assemble the whole congregation, don’t use the same sound as you do for sounding an alarm.[a] 8 The descendants of Aaron the priest are to blow the trumpets. Have them do this for you permanently throughout your generations to come.”
Sounding the Trumpet in Battle
9 “When you wage war in your land against an enemy who is hostile to you, you are to sound an alarm with the trumpets. Then you will be remembered before the face of the Lord your God and you will be delivered from your enemies. 10 At the beginning of the month, during your time of rejoicing at the appointed place, sound the trumpet over your burnt offering, then sacrifice your peace offering, since they are to be your memorial before the Lord your God. I am the Lord your God.”
Order of Travel in the Wilderness
11 On the twentieth day of the second month in the second year, the cloud was lifted up from the Tent of Meeting, 12 so the Israelis set out from the Sinai Wilderness until the cloud settled in the Paran Wilderness, 13 doing what the Lord had said through Moses.
14 The standard of the camp of Judah was the first to travel, accompanied by its army with Amminadab’s son Nahshon in charge. 15 Zuar’s son Nethanel was in charge of the camp of Issachar. 16 Helon’s son Eliab was in charge of the camp of Zebulun. 17 The tent was taken down, and the descendants of Gershon and Merari carried the tent.
18 Then the standard of the camp of Reuben set out, accompanied by its army with Shedeur’s son Elizur in charge. 19 Zurishaddai’s son Shelumiel was in charge of the tribe of Simeon. 20 Deuel’s son Eliasaph was in charge of the tribe of Gad. 21 Then the descendants of Kohath, carrying the sanctuary, set out, since the tent was to be set up before they arrive.
22 After this, the standard of the camp of Ephraim set out, accompanied by its army with Ammihud’s son Elishama in charge. 23 Pedazzur’s son Gamaliel was in charge of the tribe of Manasseh. 24 Gideoni’s son Abidan was in charge of the army of the tribe of Benjamin.
25 Then the standard of the camp of Dan set out, functioning as the rear guard for all the encampments, accompanied by its army with Ammishaddai’s son Ahiezer. 26 Ochran’s son Pagiel was in charge of the tribe of Asher. 27 Enan’s son Ahira was in charge of the tribe of Naphtali.
28 This was the travel order for the Israelis, whenever their companies traveled.
Moses invites His Father-in-Law to Accompany Israel
29 Then Moses told Reuel’s son Hobab, Moses’ relative by marriage[b] from Midian, “We are traveling to the place about which the Lord said ‘I will give it to you.’ So come with us and we’ll be good to you, because the Lord has spoken good things about Israel.”
30 But he said, “I won’t go with you because I’m returning to my land and to my own family.”
31 Then Moses[c] responded, “Please don’t leave us now, since you know where we can camp in the wilderness. You could be our guide.[d] 32 And when you come with us, the good things that the Lord will grant us, we’ll give you as well.”[e]
33 So they traveled from the mountain of the Lord, a three-day trip, with the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord traveling in front of them—a three day trip to explore a place for them to rest. 34 Moreover, the cloud of the Lord protected them during the day when they left their camp. 35 Whenever the ark was ready to travel, Moses would say:
“Arise, Lord,
to scatter your enemies,
so that whoever hates you
will flee from your presence.”
36 Whenever the ark was being readied to rest, he would say:
“Return, Lord,
to the countless thousands of Israel.”

10 Der Herr sprach zu Mose: 2 »Schmiede dir zwei Trompeten aus Silber! Mit ihnen sollst du das Volk zusammenrufen oder zum Aufbruch blasen. 3 Wenn beide Trompeten gleichzeitig geblasen werden, soll sich die ganze Gemeinschaft der Israeliten bei dir am Eingang des heiligen Zeltes versammeln. 4 Wird eine allein geblasen, sollen nur die Stammesoberhäupter Israels zu dir kommen. 5 Erklingt aber von beiden Trompeten das Signal zum Aufbruch, sollen zuerst die Stämme losziehen, die im Osten lagern. 6 Beim zweiten Mal brechen dann die Stämme im Süden auf. 7 Wenn ihr aber das Volk zusammenrufen wollt, sollt ihr dafür einen anderen Signalton verwenden.
8 Für das Blasen der Trompeten sind die Nachkommen Aarons, die Priester, zuständig. So soll es für immer bleiben. 9 Dasselbe Signal wie beim Aufbruch sollt ihr auch dann geben, wenn ihr gegen Feinde in den Kampf zieht, die euer Land angreifen. Ich, der Herr, euer Gott, werde es hören und euch vor ihnen retten.
10 Blast die Trompeten außerdem bei euren Festen und Gottesdiensten, am Anfang jedes Monats und immer, wenn ihr eure Brandopfer und Friedensopfer darbringt. Ich werde dann an euch denken und mich euch zuwenden, denn ich bin der Herr, euer Gott!«
Vom Berg Sinai bis zur Grenze Kanaans (Kapitel 10,11–20,29)
Aufbruch vom Sinai
11 Am 20. Tag des 2. Monats – die Israeliten hatten Ägypten vor gut einem Jahr verlassen – erhob sich die Wolke vom heiligen Zelt. 12 Da brachen die Stämme Israels der Reihe nach auf, verließen die Wüste Sinai und folgten der Wolke in die Wüste Paran. Dort machten sie Halt.
13 Zum ersten Mal zogen sie in der Ordnung los, die der Herr durch Mose befohlen hatte. 14 An der Spitze gingen die Verbände des Stammes Juda unter der Leitung von Nachschon, dem Sohn von Amminadab. 15 Zu dieser Abteilung gehörten auch der Stamm Issachar unter seinem Fürsten Netanel, dem Sohn von Zuar, 16 und der Stamm Sebulon, geführt von Eliab, dem Sohn von Helon. 17 Dann folgten die levitischen Sippen Gerschon und Merari mit dem heiligen Zelt, das sie vorher abgebaut hatten. 18 Hinter den Leviten kamen die Verbände des Stammes Ruben, die von Elizur, dem Sohn von Schedëur, geführt wurden. 19 Ihm unterstanden auch der Stamm Simeon mit seinem Oberhaupt Schelumiël, dem Sohn von Zurischaddai, 20 und der Stamm Gad unter der Leitung von Eljasaf, dem Sohn von Deguël. 21 Dann brach die levitische Sippe Kehat auf. Sie trug die Gegenstände aus dem Inneren des heiligen Zeltes. Die Leviten aus den Sippen Gerschon und Merari waren bereits vorangezogen, um das Heiligtum aufzubauen, bevor die anderen eintrafen. 22 Als Nächstes folgten die Verbände des Stammes Ephraim unter der Führung von Elischama, dem Sohn von Ammihud. 23 Dazu gehörten auch der Stamm Manasse mit seinem Fürsten Gamliël, dem Sohn von Pedazur, 24 und der Stamm Benjamin, dem Abidan, der Sohn von Gidoni, vorstand. 25 Den Schluss bildeten die Verbände des Stammes Dan. Sie wurden von Ahiëser, dem Sohn von Ammischaddai, angeführt 26 und umfassten neben Dan den Stamm Asser mit seinem Oberhaupt Pagiël, dem Sohn von Ochran, 27 und den Stamm Naftali unter der Leitung von Ahira, dem Sohn von Enan. 28 In dieser Reihenfolge zogen die Verbände der Israeliten los.
Mose bittet Hobab mitzuziehen
29 Mose sagte zu seinem Schwager Hobab, dem Sohn seines Schwiegervaters Reguël aus Midian: »Wir machen uns jetzt auf den Weg in das Land, das der Herr uns versprochen hat. Komm doch mit! Du wirst es gut bei uns haben, denn der Herr hat gesagt, dass es uns gut gehen wird.« 30 Aber Hobab lehnte ab: »Nein, ich möchte nicht mit euch gehen, sondern wieder zurück in meine Heimat, zu meinen Verwandten.« 31 Da bat ihn Mose: »Lass uns bitte nicht im Stich! Du weißt, wo man in der Wüste lagern kann. Wir brauchen dich, um uns zurechtzufinden! 32 Wenn du mit uns kommst, werden wir dich reich beschenken. Du sollst an dem Guten teilhaben, das der Herr uns geben wird.«
Die Bundeslade geht den Israeliten voran
33 Die Israeliten brachen vom Berg Sinai auf und zogen drei Tagereisen lang durch die Wüste. An der Spitze des Zuges wurde die Bundeslade getragen, um das Volk bis zum nächsten Lagerplatz zu führen. 34 Während der ganzen Zeit war die Wolke des Herrn über ihnen. 35 Immer wenn die Leviten mit der Bundeslade aufbrachen, rief Mose: »Erhebe dich, Herr, und zerstreue deine Feinde! Schlag alle, die dich hassen, in die Flucht!« 36 Und wenn sie mit der Bundeslade Halt machten, rief er: »Komm zurück, Herr, zu den vielen tausend Menschen deines Volkes Israel!«

10 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Make two silver trumpets for yourself; you shall make them of hammered work; you shall use them for (A)calling the congregation and for directing the movement of the camps. 3 When (B)they blow both of them, all the congregation shall gather before you at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 4 But if they blow only one, then the leaders, the (C)heads of the divisions of Israel, shall gather to you. 5 When you sound the (D)advance, (E)the camps that lie on the east side shall then begin their journey. 6 When you sound the advance the second time, then the camps that lie (F)on the south side shall begin their journey; they shall sound the call for them to begin their journeys. 7 And when the assembly is to be gathered together, (G)you shall blow, but not (H)sound the advance. 8 (I)The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and these shall be to you as an [a]ordinance forever throughout your generations.
9 (J)“When you go to war in your land against the enemy who (K)oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you will be (L)remembered before the Lord your God, and you will be saved from your enemies. 10 Also (M)in the day of your gladness, in your appointed feasts, and at the beginning of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be (N)a memorial for you before your God: I am the Lord your God.”
Departure from Sinai
11 Now it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud (O)was taken up from above the tabernacle of the Testimony. 12 And the children of Israel set out from the (P)Wilderness of Sinai on (Q)their journeys; then the cloud settled down in the (R)Wilderness of Paran. 13 So they started out for the first time (S)according to the command of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
14 The [b]standard of the camp of the children of Judah (T)set out first according to their armies; over their army was (U)Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 15 Over the army of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel the son of Zuar. 16 And over the army of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.
17 Then (V)the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set out, (W)carrying the tabernacle.
18 And (X)the standard of the camp of Reuben set out according to their armies; over their army was Elizur the son of Shedeur. 19 Over the army of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 20 And over the army of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.
21 Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the (Y)holy things. (The tabernacle would be [c]prepared for their arrival.)
22 And (Z)the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set out according to their armies; over their army was Elishama the son of Ammihud. 23 Over the army of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 24 And over the army of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni.
25 Then (AA)the standard of the camp of the children of Dan (the rear guard of all the camps) set out according to their armies; over their army was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 26 Over the army of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ocran. 27 And over the army of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.
28 (AB)Thus was the order of march of the children of Israel, according to their armies, when they began their journey.
29 Now Moses said to (AC)Hobab the son of (AD)Reuel[d] the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, (AE)‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and (AF)we will treat you well; for (AG)the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”
30 And he said to him, “I will not go, but I will depart to my own land and to my relatives.”
31 So Moses said, “Please do not leave, inasmuch as you know how we are to camp in the wilderness, and you can [e]be our (AH)eyes. 32 And it shall be, if you go with us—indeed it shall be—that (AI)whatever good the Lord will do to us, the same we will do to you.”
33 So they departed from (AJ)the mountain of the Lord on a journey of three days; and the ark of the covenant of the Lord (AK)went before them for the three days’ journey, to search out a resting place for them. 34 And (AL)the cloud of the Lord was above them by day when they went out from the camp.
35 So it was, whenever the ark set out, that Moses said:
(AM)“Rise up, O Lord!
Let Your enemies be scattered,
And let those who hate You flee before You.”
36 And when it rested, he said:
“Return, O Lord,
To the many thousands of Israel.”
