¹⁷ I see him, but not now;
I look at him, but not near;
A star shall appear from Jacob,
^(A)A scepter shall rise from Israel,
^(B)And shall smash the ^[a]forehead of Moab,
And overcome all the sons of Sheth.

11 Then a ^(A)shoot will spring from the ^(B)stem of Jesse,
And a ^(C)Branch from ^(D)his roots will bear fruit.

^2 [a]But as for ^(A)you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Too little to be among the clans of Judah,
From ^(B)you One will come forth for Me to be ^(C)ruler in Israel.
His times of coming forth are ^(D)from long ago,
From the days of eternity.”

⁶ ‘^(A)And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah;
For from you will come forth a Ruler
Who will ^(B)shepherd My people Israel.’”
