30 But if the Lord creates something new, and (A)the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they (B)go down alive into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the Lord.”

31 (C)And as soon as he had finished speaking all these words, the ground under them split apart. 32 And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and (D)all the people who belonged to Korah and all their goods. 33 So they and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed over them, and (E)they perished from the midst of the assembly. 34 And all Israel who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!” 35 And (F)fire came out from the Lord and consumed (G)the 250 men offering the incense.

36 [a] Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 37 “Tell Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest to take up the censers out of the blaze. Then scatter the fire far and wide, for they have become holy. 38 As for the censers of (H)these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, let them be made into hammered plates as a covering for the altar, for they offered them before the Lord, and they became holy. (I)Thus they shall be a sign to the people of Israel.” 39 So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned had offered, and they were hammered out as a covering for the altar, 40 to be a reminder to the people of Israel, so (J)that no outsider, who is not of the descendants of Aaron, should draw near to burn incense before the Lord, lest he become like Korah and his company—as the Lord said to him through Moses.

41 But on the next day all the congregation of the people of Israel (K)grumbled against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “You have killed the people of the Lord.” 42 And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting. And behold, (L)the cloud covered it, and (M)the glory of the Lord appeared. 43 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting, 44 and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 45 (N)“Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” (O)And they fell on their faces. 46 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, and put fire on it from off the altar and lay incense on it and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for (P)wrath has gone out from the Lord; the plague has begun.” 47 So Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the plague had already begun among the people. And he put on the incense and made atonement for the people. 48 And he stood between the dead and the living, and (Q)the plague was stopped. 49 Now those who died in the plague were 14,700, (R)besides those who died in the affair of Korah. 50 And Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, when the plague was stopped.

Aaron's Staff Buds

17 [b] The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, (S)“Speak to the people of Israel, and get from them staffs, one for each fathers' house, from all their chiefs according to their fathers' houses, twelve staffs. Write each man's name on his staff, and write Aaron's name on the staff of Levi. For there shall be one staff for the head of each fathers' house. Then you shall deposit them in the tent of meeting before the testimony, (T)where I meet with you. And the staff of the man (U)whom I choose shall sprout. Thus I will make to cease from me (V)the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against you.” Moses spoke to the people of Israel. And all their chiefs gave him staffs, one for each chief, according to their fathers' houses, twelve staffs. And the staff of Aaron was among their staffs. And Moses deposited the staffs before the Lord in (W)the tent of the testimony.

On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony, and behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds. Then Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the people of Israel. And they looked, and each man took his staff. 10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Put back (X)the staff of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept (Y)as a sign for the rebels, (Z)that you may make an end of their grumblings against me, lest they die.” 11 Thus did Moses; as the Lord commanded him, so he did.

12 And the people of Israel said to Moses, “Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone. 13 (AA)Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the Lord, shall die. Are we all to perish?”

Duties of Priests and Levites

18 So the Lord said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your father's house with you shall (AB)bear iniquity connected with the sanctuary, (AC)and you and your sons with you shall bear iniquity connected with your priesthood. And with you bring your brothers also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may (AD)join you and (AE)minister to you while you and your sons with you are before the tent of the testimony. They shall keep guard over you and (AF)over the whole tent, (AG)but shall not come near to the vessels of the sanctuary or to the altar (AH)lest they, and you, die. They shall join you and keep guard over the tent of meeting for all the service of the tent, (AI)and no outsider shall come near you. And you shall (AJ)keep guard over the sanctuary and over the altar, (AK)that there may never again be wrath on the people of Israel. (AL)And behold, I have taken your brothers the Levites from among the people of Israel. (AM)They are a gift to you, given to the Lord, to do the service of the tent of meeting. And (AN)you and your sons with you shall guard your priesthood for all that concerns the altar and (AO)that is within the veil; and you shall serve. I give your priesthood as a gift,[c] and (AP)any outsider who comes near shall be put to death.”

Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, “Behold, (AQ)I have given you charge of the contributions made to me, all the consecrated things of the people of Israel. I have given them to you (AR)as a portion and to your sons as a perpetual due.

30 But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth(A) and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead,(B) then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.(C)

31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart(D) 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them(E) and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the realm of the dead,(F) with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. 34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!”

35 And fire came out from the Lord(G) and consumed(H) the 250 men who were offering the incense.

36 The Lord said to Moses, 37 “Tell Eleazar(I) son of Aaron, the priest, to remove the censers(J) from the charred remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy— 38 the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives.(K) Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar,(L) for they were presented before the Lord and have become holy. Let them be a sign(M) to the Israelites.”

39 So Eleazar the priest(N) collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned to death,(O) and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar, 40 as the Lord directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense(P) before the Lord,(Q) or he would become like Korah and his followers.(R)

41 The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “You have killed the Lord’s people,” they said.

42 But when the assembly gathered in opposition(S) to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the tent of meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the Lord(T) appeared. 43 Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the tent of meeting, 44 and the Lord said to Moses, 45 “Get away from this assembly so I can put an end(U) to them at once.” And they fell facedown.

46 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer(V) and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly(W) to make atonement(X) for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord;(Y) the plague(Z) has started.” 47 So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people,(AA) but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. 48 He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.(AB) 49 But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah.(AC) 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, for the plague had stopped.[a]

The Budding of Aaron’s Staff

17 [b]The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs(AD) from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes.(AE) Write the name of each man on his staff. On the staff of Levi write Aaron’s name,(AF) for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. Place them in the tent of meeting(AG) in front of the ark of the covenant law,(AH) where I meet with you.(AI) The staff belonging to the man I choose(AJ) will sprout,(AK) and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling(AL) against you by the Israelites.”

So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron’s staff was among them. Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the covenant law.(AM)

The next day Moses entered the tent(AN) and saw that Aaron’s staff,(AO) which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.(AP) Then Moses brought out all the staffs(AQ) from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.

10 The Lord said to Moses, “Put back Aaron’s staff(AR) in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious.(AS) This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.” 11 Moses did just as the Lord commanded him.

12 The Israelites said to Moses, “We will die! We are lost, we are all lost!(AT) 13 Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the Lord will die.(AU) Are we all going to die?”

Duties of Priests and Levites

18 The Lord said to Aaron, “You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary,(AV) and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood. Bring your fellow Levites from your ancestral tribe to join you and assist you when you and your sons minister(AW) before the tent of the covenant law. They are to be responsible to you(AX) and are to perform all the duties of the tent,(AY) but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar. Otherwise both they and you will die.(AZ) They are to join you and be responsible for the care of the tent of meeting—all the work at the tent—and no one else may come near where you are.(BA)

“You are to be responsible for the care of the sanctuary and the altar,(BB) so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelites again. I myself have selected your fellow Levites from among the Israelites as a gift to you,(BC) dedicated to the Lord to do the work at the tent of meeting.(BD) But only you and your sons may serve as priests in connection with everything at the altar and inside the curtain.(BE) I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift.(BF) Anyone else who comes near the sanctuary is to be put to death.(BG)

Offerings for Priests and Levites

Then the Lord said to Aaron, “I myself have put you in charge of the offerings presented to me; all the holy offerings the Israelites give me I give to you and your sons as your portion,(BH) your perpetual share.(BI)
