40 In the morning, however, they rose up early and went up to the [a]ridge of the hill country, saying, “(A)Here we are; we will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised because we have indeed sinned.” 41 But Moses said, “(B)Why then do you trespass against the [b]command of Yahweh, when it will not succeed? 42 (C)Do not go up, for Yahweh is not among you, so that you are not [c]defeated before your enemies. 43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites will be there in front of you, and you will fall by the sword, inasmuch as you have turned back from following Yahweh. And Yahweh will not be with you.” 44 But they went up heedlessly to the [d]ridge of the hill country; neither (D)the ark of the covenant of Yahweh nor Moses moved from the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down, and struck them and beat them down as far as (E)Hormah.

41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(C) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(D) 43 for the Amalekites(E) and the Canaanites(F) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(G) and you will fall by the sword.”

44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(H) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(I) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(J) who lived in that hill country(K) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(L)
