Verantwoordelijkheden van de priesters en de Levieten

18 De Here zei daarop tegen Aäron: ‘U en uw zonen zijn verantwoordelijk voor elke ontheiliging van het heiligdom en u draagt ook de gevolgen van elke ontheiliging van het priesterambt. 2,3 Uw broeders van de stam Levi zijn uw assistenten, maar alleen u en uw zonen mogen de heilige taken in de tabernakel uitvoeren. De Levieten moeten er voor oppassen dat zij geen heilige voorwerpen of het altaar aanraken, anders vernietig Ik hen en u. 4 Zij zullen u helpen en de zorg voor het heilige op zich nemen. Geen vreemdeling mag daar tot u naderen. 5 Onthoud het goed, alleen de priesters mogen de heilige taken in het heiligdom en bij het altaar uitvoeren. Als u deze instructies aanhoudt, zal de toorn van God de Israëlieten nooit meer treffen. 6 Ik zeg het nogmaals: uw broeders, de Levieten, zijn uw assistenten voor het werk van de tabernakel. Zij zijn een geschenk aan u van de Here. 7 Maar u en uw zonen, de priesters, moeten de heilige diensten, aan het altaar en alles wat in het Heilige der Heiligen staat, eigenhandig uitvoeren. Want het priesterschap is een dienst die Ik u heb gegeven. Iemand anders die deze taken probeert uit te voeren, zal sterven.’

8 De Here zei vervolgens tegen Aäron: ‘Ik vertrouw u alle geschenken toe die het volk Mij brengt. U en uw zonen geef Ik deze gaven in handen, u mag daar altijd over beschikken. 9 De spijsoffers, de zondoffers en de schuldoffers zijn voor u, uitgezonderd het gedeelte dat op het altaar voor de Here wordt verbrand. Dit alles zal u tot een allerheiligst bezit zijn. 10 Zij moeten op een allerheiligste plaats worden gegeten en dan alleen door mannen. 11 Alle andere geschenken die voor het altaar als beweegoffer aan Mij worden geofferd, zijn voor u en uw gezinnen, zowel voor de zonen als de dochters. Want al uw gezinsleden mogen dit eten, mits zij op dat moment rein zijn. 12 Ook voor u zijn de geschenken, die het volk aan de Here brengt van de eerste opbrengsten van hun oogst: het beste van de olijfolie, de wijn, het graan 13 en de andere gewassen. Uw gezinnen mogen hiervan eten, mits zij op dat moment rein zijn. 14,15 Zo zal alles wat aan de Here is gewijd, van u zijn, ook de eerstgeboren zonen van het volk Israël en het eerstgeborene van hun vee. 16 U mag echter nooit de eerstgeboren zoon of de eerstgeborenen van dieren die Ik als voedsel verboden heb, aannemen, in plaats daarvan moet voor ieder eerstgeboren kind een betaling van vijfenvijftig gram zilver worden gedaan. Dat geld moet worden gebracht als het kind een maand oud is. 17 Het eerstgeboren jong van koeien, schapen en geiten mag niet worden teruggekocht, want het is heilig. Het bloed daarvan moet op het altaar worden gesprenkeld en het vet zal als vuuroffer worden verbrand, het is aangenaam voor de Here. 18 Het vlees van deze dieren is voor u, met inbegrip van de borst en de rechterschouder die voor het altaar als beweegoffer aan de Here zijn geofferd. 19 Ja, Ik heb u al de beweegoffers gegeven die het volk van Israël aan de Here brengt. Zij zijn het voedsel voor u en uw gezinnen, dat is een duurzame overeenkomst tussen de Here en u en uw nakomelingen. 20 U, als priester, mag geen land in eigendom hebben noch een andere bron van inkomsten, want Ik ben alles wat u nodig hebt. 21 Wat de stam Levi betreft, uw familie, zij zullen voor hun werk worden betaald uit de tienden die het hele land Israël opbrengt. 22 Van nu af aan mogen Israëlieten die geen priester of Leviet zijn, het heiligdom niet meer betreden. Als zij dat wel doen, zullen zij schuldig worden verklaard en sterven. 23 Alleen de Levieten zullen het werk daar doen en verantwoordelijk zijn voor de fouten die zij maken. Dit is een eeuwigdurende regel voor Israël, dat de Levieten geen eigendommen mogen bezitten in Israël. 24 Want de tienden van het volk, met een bewegend gebaar voor het altaar aan de Here geofferd, zullen voor de Levieten zijn. Dat is hun erfenis, daarom hebben zij geen eigendommen nodig.’

25 De Here vervolgde tegen Mozes: 26 ‘Zeg de Levieten dat zij de Here een tiende moeten geven van de tienden die zij ontvangen—een tiende van een tiende—en dat zij dat aan de Here moeten aanbieden met een bewegend gebaar, staande voor het altaar. 27 De Here zal dit beschouwen als het offer van de eerste opbrengsten van de oogst van wijn en koren, als was het een offer van hun eigen oogst. 28,29 Dit tiende deel van de tienden zal worden genomen uit het beste wat u als het deel van de Here hebt ontvangen en zal aan de priester Aäron worden gegeven. 30 Het zal u worden toegerekend als kwam het van uw eigen dorsvloer en wijnpers. 31 Aäron en zijn zonen en hun gezinnen mogen het thuis eten of op welke plaats zij maar willen, want het is hun loon voor de dienst in de tabernakel. 32 Als u, Levieten, het beste deel van de tienden voor de Here die u ontvangt, aan de priesters geeft, zult u niet schuldig zijn. Maar pas er voor op dat u de heilige giften van het volk Israël niet behandelt alsof het gewone giften zijn, anders zult u sterven.’

Duties of Priests and Levites

18 Then the Lord said to Aaron: (A)“You and your sons and your father’s house with you shall (B)bear the [a]iniquity related to the sanctuary, and you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity associated with your priesthood. 2 Also bring with you your brethren of the (C)tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may be (D)joined with you and serve you while you and your sons are with you before the tabernacle of [b]witness. 3 They shall attend to your [c]needs and (E)all the needs of the tabernacle; (F)but they shall not come near the articles of the sanctuary and the altar, (G)lest they die—they and you also. 4 They shall be joined with you and attend to the needs of the tabernacle of meeting, for all the work of the tabernacle; (H)but an outsider shall not come near you. 5 And you shall attend to (I)the duties of the sanctuary and the duties of the altar, (J)that there may be no more wrath on the children of Israel. 6 Behold, I Myself have (K)taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel; (L)they are a gift to you, given by the Lord, to do the work of the tabernacle of meeting. 7 Therefore (M)you and your sons with you shall attend to your priesthood for everything at the altar and (N)behind the veil; and you shall serve. I give your priesthood to you as a (O)gift for service, but the outsider who comes near shall be put to death.”

Offerings for Support of the Priests

8 And the Lord spoke to Aaron: “Here, (P)I Myself have also given you [d]charge of My heave offerings, all the holy gifts of the children of Israel; I have given them (Q)as a portion to you and your sons, as an ordinance forever. 9 This shall be yours of the most holy things reserved from the fire: every offering of theirs, every (R)grain offering and every (S)sin offering and every (T)trespass offering which they render to Me, shall be most holy for you and your sons. 10 (U)In a most holy place you shall eat it; every male shall eat it. It shall be holy to you.

11 “This also is yours: (V)the heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel; I have given them to you, and your sons and daughters with you, as an ordinance forever. (W)Everyone who is [e]clean in your house may eat it.

12 (X)“All the [f]best of the oil, all the best of the new wine and the grain, (Y)their firstfruits which they offer to the Lord, I have given them to you. 13 Whatever first ripe fruit is in their land, (Z)which they bring to the Lord, shall be yours. Everyone who is clean in your house may eat it.

14 (AA)“Every [g]devoted thing in Israel shall be yours.

15 “Everything that first opens (AB)the womb of all flesh, which they bring to the Lord, whether man or beast, shall be yours; nevertheless (AC)the firstborn of man you shall surely redeem, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem. 16 And those redeemed of the devoted things you shall redeem when one month old, (AD)according to your valuation, for five shekels of silver, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, which is (AE)twenty gerahs. 17 (AF)But the firstborn of a cow, the firstborn of a sheep, or the firstborn of a goat you shall not redeem; they are holy. (AG)You shall sprinkle their blood on the altar, and burn their fat as an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma to the Lord. 18 And their flesh shall be yours, just as the (AH)wave[h] breast and the right thigh are yours.

19 “All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer to the Lord, I have given to you and your sons and daughters with you as an ordinance forever; (AI)it is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord with you and your descendants with you.”

20 Then the Lord said to Aaron: “You shall have (AJ)no inheritance in their land, nor shall you have any portion among them; (AK)I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel.

Tithes for Support of the Levites

21 “Behold, (AL)I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in Israel as [i]an inheritance in return for the work which they perform, (AM)the work of the tabernacle of meeting. 22 (AN)Hereafter the children of Israel shall not come near the tabernacle of meeting, (AO)lest they bear sin and die. 23 But the Levites shall perform the work of the tabernacle of meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity; it shall be a statute forever, throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance. 24 For the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer up as a heave offering to the Lord, I have given to the Levites [j]as an inheritance; therefore I have said to them, ‘Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.’ ”

The Tithe of the Levites

25 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “Speak thus to the Levites, and say to them: ‘When you take from the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them as your inheritance, then you shall offer up a heave offering of it to the Lord, (AP)a tenth of the tithe. 27 And your heave offering shall be reckoned to you as though it were the grain of the (AQ)threshing floor and as the fullness of the winepress. 28 Thus you shall also offer a heave offering to the Lord from all your tithes which you receive from the children of Israel, and you shall give the Lord’s heave offering from it to Aaron the priest. 29 Of all your gifts you shall offer up every heave offering due to the Lord, from all the [k]best of them, the consecrated part of them.’ 30 Therefore you shall say to them: ‘When you have lifted up the best of it, then the rest shall be accounted to the Levites as the produce of the threshing floor and as the produce of the winepress. 31 You may eat it in any place, you and your households, for it is (AR)your [l]reward for your work in the tabernacle of meeting. 32 And you shall (AS)bear no sin because of it, when you have lifted up the best of it. But you shall not (AT)profane the holy gifts of the children of Israel, lest you die.’ ”

Duties of Levites

18 So the Lord said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your father’s household with you shall (A)bear the guilt [a]in connection with the sanctuary, and you and your sons with you shall bear the guilt [b]in connection with your priesthood. 2 But bring with you also your brothers, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may be (B)joined with you and serve you, while you and your sons with you are before the tent of the testimony. 3 And they shall thus attend to your obligation and the obligation of all the tent, but (C)they shall not come near to the furnishings of the sanctuary and (D)the altar, or both they and you will die. 4 They shall be joined with you and attend to the obligations of the tent of meeting, for all the service of the tent; but an [c]outsider may not come near you. 5 So you shall attend to the (E)obligations of the sanctuary and the obligations of the altar, (F)so that there will no longer be wrath on the sons of Israel. 6 Behold, I Myself (G)have taken your [d]fellow Levites from among the sons of Israel; they are (H)a gift to you, [e]dedicated to the Lord, to perform the service for the tent of meeting. 7 But you and your sons with you shall (I)attend to your priesthood for everything concerning the altar and inside the veil, and you are to perform service. I am giving you the priesthood as (J)a [f]bestowed service, but (K)the [g]outsider who comes near shall be put to death.”

The Priests’ Portion

8 Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, “Now behold, I Myself have given you charge of My [h](L)offerings, even all the holy gifts of the sons of Israel I have given them to you as a portion and to your sons as a perpetual allotment. 9 This shall be yours from the most holy gifts reserved from the fire; every offering of theirs, even (M)every grain offering and every (N)sin offering and every guilt offering, which they shall render to Me, shall be most holy for you and for your sons. 10 As the most holy gifts you shall eat it; every male shall eat it. It shall be holy to you. 11 This also is yours, (O)the offering of their gift, even all the wave offerings of the sons of Israel; I have (P)given them to you and to your sons and daughters with you as a perpetual allotment. Everyone of your household who is clean may eat it. 12 (Q)All the [i]best of the fresh oil and all the [j]best of the fresh wine and of the grain, the first fruits of those which they give to the Lord, I give them to you. 13 (R)The first ripe fruits of all that is in their land, which they bring to the Lord, shall be yours; everyone of your household who is clean may eat it. 14 (S)Every devoted thing in Israel shall be yours. 15 [k](T)Every first issue of the womb of all flesh, whether man or animal, which they offer to the Lord, shall be yours; nevertheless the firstborn of man you shall surely redeem, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem. 16 As to their redemption price, from a month old you shall redeem them, by your valuation, five [l]shekels in silver, according to the [m]shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs. 17 But (U)the firstborn of an ox or the firstborn of a sheep or the firstborn of a goat, you shall not redeem; they are holy. (V)You shall sprinkle their blood on the altar and shall offer up their fat in smoke as an offering by fire, for a soothing aroma to the Lord. 18 Their [n]meat shall be yours; it shall be yours like the (W)breast of a wave offering and like the right thigh. 19 (X)All the offerings of the holy gifts, which the sons of Israel offer to the Lord, I have given to you and your sons and your daughters with you, as a perpetual allotment. It is (Y)an everlasting covenant of salt before the Lord to you and your [o]descendants with you.” 20 Then the Lord said to Aaron, “(Z)You shall have no inheritance in their land nor own any portion among them; (AA)I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel.

21 “To the sons of Levi, behold, I have given all the (AB)tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they perform, the service of the tent of meeting. 22 (AC)The sons of Israel shall not come near the tent of meeting again, or they will bear sin and die. 23 Only the Levites shall perform the service of the tent of meeting, and they shall (AD)bear their iniquity; it shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations, and among the sons of Israel (AE)they shall have no inheritance. 24 For the tithe of the sons of Israel, which they offer as an offering to the Lord, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance; therefore I have said concerning them, ‘(AF)They shall have no inheritance among the sons of Israel.’”

25 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “Moreover, you shall speak to the Levites and say to them, ‘When you take from the sons of Israel (AG)the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall present an offering from it to the Lord, a (AH)tithe of the tithe. 27 Your offering shall be reckoned to you as the grain from the threshing floor or the full produce from the wine vat. 28 So you shall also present an offering to the Lord from your tithes, which you receive from the sons of Israel; and from it you shall give the Lord’s offering to Aaron the priest. 29 Out of all your gifts you shall present every offering due to the Lord, from all the [p]best of them, [q]the sacred part from them.’ 30 You shall say to them, ‘When you have [r]offered from it the best of it, then the rest shall be reckoned to the Levites as the product of the threshing floor, and as the product of the wine vat. 31 You may eat it anywhere, you and your households, for it is your compensation in return for your service in the tent of meeting. 32 You will bear no sin by reason of it when you have [s]offered the [t]best of it. But you shall not (AI)profane the sacred gifts of the sons of Israel, or you will die.’”
