Идолопоклонство Исраила Баал-Пеору
25 Пока Исраил стоял в Шиттиме, исраильтяне начали развратничать с моавитянками, 2 которые приглашали их на жертвоприношения своим богам. Народ ел и кланялся их богам. 3 Так Исраил стал поклоняться лжебогу Баал-Пеору, и Вечный разгневался на Исраил.
4 Вечный сказал Мусе:
– Возьми всех вождей этого народа и повесь их у всех на виду предо Мной, чтобы погас Мой пылающий гнев на Исраил.
5 И Муса сказал судьям Исраила:
– Пусть каждый из вас предаст смерти тех из своих людей, кто поклонялся Баал-Пеору.
6 В это время некий исраильтянин привёл в свою семью мадианитянку на глазах у Мусы и всего общества исраильтян, когда они плакали у входа в шатёр встречи. 7 Увидев это, Пинхас, сын Элеазара, сына священнослужителя Харуна, оставил собрание, взял копьё 8 и вошёл за исраильтянином в его шалаш. Он пронзил копьём их обоих, исраильтянина и женщину в живот. Тогда мор среди исраильтян прекратился, 9 но погибших от него было двадцать четыре тысячи человек.
10 Вечный сказал Мусе:
11 – Пинхас, сын Элеазара, сына священнослужителя Харуна, погасил Мой гнев на исраильтян. Он возревновал ревностью, подобной Моей, и Я не искоренил их в Своей ревности. 12 Итак, скажи ему, что Я заключаю с ним соглашение мира. 13 С ним и его потомками заключается соглашение вечного священства, потому что он ревностно защищал честь своего Бога и очистил исраильтян.
14 Исраильтянина, который был убит вместе с мадианитянкой, звали Зимри, сын Салу; он был вождём семьи из рода Шимона. 15 А убитую мадианитянку звали Хазва, она была дочерью Цура, который был вождём рода, главой семьи в Мадиане.
16 Вечный сказал Мусе:
17 – Считайте мадианитян врагами и убивайте их, 18 потому что они поступили с вами как с врагами, прельстив вас Пеором и своей сестрой Хазвой, дочерью мадианского вождя, убитой, когда из-за Пеора начался мор.

Israelites and Moabites intermarry
25 When the Israelites lived at Shittim, the people made themselves impure by having illicit sex with Moabite women. 2 The Moabite women invited the people to the sacrifices for their god. So the people ate a meal, and they worshipped their god. 3 Israel became attached to the Baal of Peor, and the Lord was angry at the Israelites. 4 The Lord said to Moses: Take all the leaders of the people and kill them on behalf of the Lord in broad daylight, so that the Lord’s anger turns away from Israel.
5 Then Moses said to Israel’s officials, “Each of you: kill your men who are attached to the Baal of Peor.”
Israelites and Midianites intermarry
6 An Israelite man brought a Midianite woman to his brothers in the sight of Moses and the entire Israelite community, who were weeping at the entrance of the meeting tent. 7 When Phinehas (Eleazar’s son and Aaron the priest’s grandson) saw this, he arose in the middle of the community, took a spear in his hand, 8 went after the Israelite man into the chamber, and stabbed the two of them, the Israelite man and the woman, through the stomach. Then the plague stopped spreading among the Israelites. 9 Yet those who died by the plague numbered twenty-four thousand.
10 The Lord spoke to Moses: 11 Phinehas (Eleazar’s son and Aaron the priest’s grandson) has turned back my rage toward the Israelites. Because he was jealous for me among you, I didn’t consume the Israelites due to my jealousy. 12 Therefore, say: I’m now giving him my covenant of well-being. 13 It will be for him and his descendants a covenant of permanent priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and sought reconciliation for the Israelites.
14 The name of the slain Israelite man who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of Simeon’s household. 15 The name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, a tribal leader of a Midianite household. 16 The Lord spoke to Moses: 17 Go after the Midianites and destroy them 18 because they went after you by the deception they devised for you at Peor with Cozbi, the Midianite chief’s daughter and their sister, who was killed on the same day as the plague during the events at Peor.

Moab Seduces Israel
25 While Israel was staying in Shittim,(A) the men began to indulge in sexual immorality(B) with Moabite(C) women,(D) 2 who invited them to the sacrifices(E) to their gods.(F) The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to(G) the Baal of Peor.(H) And the Lord’s anger burned against them.
4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders(I) of these people, kill them and expose(J) them in broad daylight before the Lord,(K) so that the Lord’s fierce anger(L) may turn away from Israel.”
5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death(M) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”(N)
6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite(O) woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping(P) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas(Q) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear(R) in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;(S) 9 but those who died in the plague(T) numbered 24,000.(U)
10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.(V) Since he was as zealous for my honor(W) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace(X) with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,(Y) because he was zealous(Z) for the honor(AA) of his God and made atonement(AB) for the Israelites.”(AC)
14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman(AD) was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.(AE) 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi(AF) daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.(AG)
16 The Lord said to Moses,(AH) 17 “Treat the Midianites(AI) as enemies(AJ) and kill them.(AK) 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident(AL) involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
