Offers for the Seventh Month

29 “‘On the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you will have a holy convocation; you will not do any regular work.[a] It will be a day for you of blowing trumpets. You will offer a burnt offering as a fragrance of appeasement for Yahweh: one bull, one ram, and seven male lambs in their first year;[b] they will be without defect. Their grain offering will be finely milled flour mixed with oil: three-tenths for the bull, two-tenths for the ram; and one-tenth for each of the seven male lambs; with one male goat for a sin offering, to make atonement for you, in addition to the burnt offering of the new moon and its grain offering, the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and their libations, according to their stipulations, as a fragrance of appeasement by fire for Yahweh.

Offerings for the Day of Atonement

“‘And on the tenth of this seventh month you will have a holy convocation, and you will afflict yourselves;[c] you will not do any work. You will present a burnt offering for Yahweh, a fragrance of appeasement: one bull, one ram, seven male lambs in their first year;[d] they will be without defect. And their grain offering will be of finely milled flour mixed with oil: three-tenths for the bull, two-tenths for the one ram, 10 one-tenth for each of the seven male lambs; 11 one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering of atonement and the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and their libations.

12 “‘Then on the fifteenth day of the seventh month you will have a holy convocation; you will not do any regular work,[e] and you will hold a religious feast for Yahweh for seven days. 13 You will present a burnt offering, an offering made by fire as a fragrance of appeasement for Yahweh: thirteen bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs in their first year;[f] they will be without defect. 14 And their grain offering will be of finely milled flour mixed with oil: three-tenths for the bull, two-tenths for the one ram, 15 one-tenth for each of the seven male lambs; 16 and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its libation.

17 “‘On the second day: twelve bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs in their first year;[g] they will be without defect; 18 and their grain offering and their libations for the bulls, for the rams, and for the male lambs, by their number according to the stipulation; 19 and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, and their libations.

20 “‘On the third day: eleven bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs without defect in their first year;[h] 21 and their grain offering and their libations for the bulls, for the rams, and for the male lambs, by their number according to the stipulation; 22 and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its libation.

23 “‘On the fourth day: ten bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs without defect in their first year;[i] 24 and their grain offering and their libations for the bulls, for the rams, and for the male lambs by their number according to the stipulation; 25 and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its libation.

26 “‘On the fifth day: nine bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs without defect in their first year;[j] 27 and their grain offering and their libations for the bulls, for the rams, and for the male lambs by their number according to the stipulation; 28 and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its libation.

29 “‘On the sixth day: eight bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs without defect in their first year;[k] and their grain offering and their libations for the bulls, for the rams, and for the male lambs by their number according to the stipulation; 30 and their grain offering and their libations for the bulls, for the rams, and for the male lambs by their number according to the stipulation; 31 and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its libation.

32 “‘On the seventh day: seven bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs without defect in their first year;[l] 33 and their grain offering and their libations for the bulls, for the rams, and for the male lambs by their number according to the stipulation; 34 and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its libation.

35 “‘On the eighth day you will have an assembly; you will not do any regular work.[m] 36 You will present a burnt offering, an offering made by fire as a fragrance of appeasement for Yahweh: one bull, one ram, seven male lambs without defect in their first year;[n] 37 and their grain offering and their libations for the bulls, for the rams, and for the male lambs by their number according to the stipulation; 38 and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its libation.

39 “‘You will present these to Yahweh at your appointed time, in addition to your vows and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings and for you grain offerings and for your libations and for your fellowship offerings.’”

40 [o] So Moses said to the Israelites[p] in accordance with all that Yahweh commanded Moses.

Laws for Vows

30 Then Moses spoke to the leaders[q] of the tribes concerning the Israelites,[r] saying, “This is the word that Yahweh commanded: if a man makes a vow for Yahweh or swears an oath with a binding pledge on himself, he must not render his word invalid; he must do all that went out from his mouth.

“If a woman makes a vow to Yahweh, and she binds a pledge on herself in her father’s house in your childhood, but if her father hears her vow or her pledge that she bound on herself and says nothing to her, then all her vows will stand, and every pledge that she binds on her life will stand. If her father forbids her on the day he hears of it, all her vows or her pledges that she bound on herself will not stand, and Yahweh will forgive her because her father has forgiven her.

“If she has a husband[s] while bound by her vows or a rash promise of her lips, and her husband hears of it and is silent on the day he hears it, her vows will stand, and her pledge that she bound upon herself will stand. But if on the day her husband hears of it, he forbids her, then he will nullify her vow that she is under, and the rash promise of her lips that she bound on herself; and Yahweh will forgive her.

“But the vow of a widow or a woman who is divorced, all that she binds on herself will stand on her. 10 But if she made a vow in her husband’s house, or bound herself on a pledge with a sworn oath, 11 and her husband heard it but was silent to her, and he did not forbid her, all her vows will stand and every pledge that she bound on herself will stand. 12 But if her husband nullified them on the day he hears them, all her vows going out of her lips concerning her vows or the pledge on herself will not stand; her husband has nullified them, and Yahweh will forgive her.

13 “Any vow and any sworn oath of a pledge to inflict on herself, her husband can confirm it or her husband can nullify it. 14 But if her husband is completely silent from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or all her pledges that are on her; he confirms them because he was silent to her on the day he heard them. 15 But if he indeed nullifies them after he hears them, then he will bear her guilt.”

16 These are the decrees that Yahweh commanded Moses, as between a husband and his wife, and between a father and his daughter, while her childhood is in her father’s house.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

Now it happened that in those days a decree went out from Caesar[a] Augustus to register all the empire. (This first registration took place when[b] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to be registered, each one to his own town. So Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David, to be registered together with Mary, who was legally promised in marriage to him and[c] was pregnant. And it happened that while they were there, the time came[d] for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

And there were shepherds in the same region, living out of doors and keeping watch, guarding over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord stood near them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terribly frightened.[e] 10 And the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring good news to you of great joy which will be for all the people: 11 that today a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, was born for you in the city of David. 12 And this will be the sign for you: you will find the baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
    and on earth peace
    among people with whom he is pleased!”[f]

15 And it happened that when the angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds began to say[g] to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has revealed to us!” 16 And they went hurrying and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the manger. 17 And when they[h] saw it,[i] they made known the statement that had been told to them about this child. 18 And all who heard it[j] were astonished concerning what had been said to them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary treasured up all these words, pondering them[k] in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

A Lament for Jerusalem after Its Destruction

79 O God, the nations have entered your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple;
they have reduced Jerusalem to ruins.
They have given the bodies of your servants
as food for the birds of the heavens,
the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was none to bury them.
We have become a taunt to our neighbors,
a derision and a scorn to those around us.
How long, O Yahweh? Will you be angry forever?
Will your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour out your anger on the nations
that do not know you,
and on the kingdoms
that do not call on your name,
because they[b] have devoured Jacob
and have laid waste his habitation.
Do not remember against us former iniquities;
let your mercies meet us quickly
because we are brought very low.
Help us, O God of our salvation,
for the glory of your name;
and deliver us and forgive[c] our sins
for the sake of your name.
10 Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let it[d] be known among the nations before our eyes,
by the avenging of the blood of your servants
that was poured out.
11 Let the groaning of the prisoner come before you.
According to the greatness of your power,[e]
spare[f] the children appointed to death.
12 And return to our neighbors sevenfold upon them[g]
their taunts with which they taunted you, O Lord.
13 Then we, your people and the flock of your pasture,
we will give thanks to you forever.

A Prayer to Restore Israel

80 Give ear, O shepherd of Israel,
who leads Joseph like a flock.
Shine forth, you who sits enthroned above the cherubim.
Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh,
stir up your power
and come for our salvation.
O God, restore us,
and cause your face to shine that we may be saved.
O Yahweh God of hosts,
how long will you be angry[j]
against the prayer of your people?
You have fed them the bread of tears;
you have given them tears to drink in full measure.[k]
You have made us an object of strife to our neighbors,
and our enemies mock among themselves.
O God of hosts, restore us
and cause your face to shine that we may be saved.
You uprooted a vine from Egypt;
you drove out the nations and planted it.
You prepared a place before it,
and it took deep root[l] and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
and the mighty cedars with its boughs.
11 It spread its branches to the sea
and its shoots to the river.
12 Why have you broken down its walls,
so that all who pass on the road pluck fruit from it?
13 Swine from the forests devour[m] it

Observe from heaven and see,
and pay attention to this vine,

on the son of humankind whom you made strong for yourself.

An Appeal from God to Israel

81 Shout out to God our strength;
shout joyfully to the God of Jacob.
Lift up a song and strike[p] the tambourine,
the pleasant lyre, together with the harp.
Blow the horn at new moon,
at full moon, for our feast day,
because it is a statute for Israel,
an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
He made it a statute[q] in Joseph
when he went out against the land of Egypt,
where I heard a language I did not know.[r]
“I removed his shoulder from a burden.
His hands were freed from the basket.
In this[s] trouble you called, and I rescued you.
Within the secret place of thunder I answered you;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
Hear, O my people, and I will admonish you;
O Israel, if you would but listen to me.
There shall be no strange god among you,
and you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
10 I am Yahweh your God,
who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.
11 But my people did not listen to my voice,
and Israel did not yield to me.
12 So I let them[t] go in the stubbornness of their heart;
they walked in their counsels.

God Commands Justice

82 God stands in the divine assembly;[y]
he administers judgment in the midst of the gods.[z]
“How long will you judge unjustly
and show favoritism to the wicked?[aa] Selah
Judge on behalf of the helpless and the orphan;
provide justice to the afflicted and the poor.
Rescue the helpless and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
They do not know or consider.[ab]
They go about in the darkness,
so that all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
I have said,[ac] “You are gods,
and sons of the Most High, all of you.
However, you will die like men,[ad]
and you will fall like one of the princes.”
Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
because you shall inherit[ae] all the nations.

A Request to Act against Israel’s Neighbors

83 O God, do not rest silently.
Do not keep silent or be still, O God.
For look, your enemies roar,
and those who hate you have lifted their head.
They devise cunning schemes[ag] against your people,
and consult together against your protected ones.[ah]
They say, “Come, let us annihilate them from being a nation,
so that the name of Israel will be remembered no more.”
For they have consulted together with a unified purpose.[ai]
They have made a covenant against you:
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
Moab and the Hagrites,
Gebal and Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia, with the inhabitants of Tyre.
Assyria also has joined with them.
They provide help[aj] to the children of Lot. Selah
Do to them as you did with Midian,
as with Sisera, as with Jabin at the wadi of Kishon.
10 They were destroyed at En-dor;
they became dung for the ground.
11 Make their leaders like Oreb and Zeeb,
and all their chiefs like Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 who said, “Let us take as our possession
the pastures of God.”
13 O my God, make them like the tumbleweed,
like the chaff before wind.
14 As fire burns a forest,
and as a flame sets afire mountains,
15 so pursue them with your tempest
and terrify them with your storm.
16 Fill their faces with shame,
that they may seek your name, O Yahweh.
17 Let them be ashamed and terrified forever,
and let them be humiliated and perish
18 that they may know that you,
whose name is Yahweh, you alone,
are the Most High over the whole earth.

The Joy of Worshiping in the Temple

84 How lovely are your dwelling places,
O Yahweh of hosts!
My soul longs and even fails
for the courtyards of Yahweh.
My heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.
Even a bird finds a home, and a swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
near your altars, O Yahweh of hosts,
my king and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house;[al]
they can ever praise you. Selah
Blessed is the man whose strength is in you;
in their heart are the highways to Zion.
Passing through the Valley of Baca,[am]
they make it a spring.
The early rain covers it with blessings[an] as well.
They go from strength to strength,
until each appears before God in Zion.[ao]
O Yahweh, God of hosts, hear my prayer;
give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah
Look at our shield, O God,
and have regard for the face of your anointed one.
10 Because better is a day in your courtyards
than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be at the threshold of the house[ap] of my God
than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 Because Yahweh God is a sun and a shield;
Yahweh gives grace and honor.
He does not withhold good from those who walk blamelessly.
12 O Yahweh of hosts,
blessed is the man who trusts you.

Hope in God’s Future Help

85 O Yahweh, you favored your land.
You restored the fortunes[ar] of Jacob.
You took away the guilt[as] of your people;
you covered all their sin. Selah
You withdrew all your wrath;
you turned from your burning anger.
Restore us, O God of our salvation,
and annul your vexation with us.
Will you be angry against us forever?
Will you prolong your anger generation after generation?
Will you not again revive us,
that your people might rejoice in you?
Show us, O Yahweh, your loyal love,
and grant us your salvation.
I will hear what God, Yahweh, will speak,
because he will speak peace
to his people, even his faithful ones,[at]
but let them not return to folly.
Surely his salvation is near for those who fear him,
that glory may abide in our land.
10 Loyal love and faithfulness[au] will meet one another;
righteousness and peace will kiss.
11 Faithfulness[av] will sprout from the ground,
and righteousness will look down from heaven.
12 Yes, Yahweh will give what is good,
and our land will give its produce.
13 Righteousness will go before him,
and it will make his steps a pathway.

17 Better a dry morsel and quiet with it
    than a house filled with feasts of strife.
A slave who deals wisely will rule over a child who acts shamefully,
    and in the midst of brothers he will share his inheritance.
A crucible is for the silver, and a furnace is for the gold,
    but Yahweh will test hearts.
He who does evil listens to lips of wickedness,
    and the liar gives heed to the tongue of mischief.
He who mocks the poor insults him who made him;
    he who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished.
The crown of the elderly are grandchildren,[a]
    and the glory of children is their fathers.
Fine speech[b] is not becoming a fool,
    still less[c] is false speech[d] for a ruler.
The bribe is a stone of magic in the eyes of its owner;[e]
    everywhere[f] he will turn, he will prosper.
He who forgives an affront fosters love,
    but he who waits on a matter will alienate a friend.
10 A rebuke strikes him who understands
    deeper than one hundred blows to a fool.
11 An evil person will seek only rebellion,
    and a cruel messenger will be sent against him.
12 May a man meet a she-bear robbed of offspring
    and not a fool in his folly.
13 For he who returns evil for good,
    evil will not depart from his house.
14 Like the release of water is the beginning of strife;
    before it breaks out, stop the quarrel.
15 He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous,
    the two of them are both abominations of Yahweh.
16 Why is this? A price in the hand of a fool,
    in order to buy wisdom where[g] there is no sense.[h]
17 The friend loves at all times[i],
    but a brother is born for adversity.
18 A person who lacks sense[j] pledges;[k]
    he becomes security before his neighbor.
19 He who loves transgression loves strife;
    he who builds his high thresholds seeks destruction.
20 He who is crooked of heart[l] will not find goodness,
    and he who is perverse, by his tongue he will fall into calamity.
21 He who begets a fool, there is trouble for him;
    the father of a fool will not rejoice.
22 A cheerful heart is good medicine,
    but a downcast spirit will dry out bones.
23 The wicked will accept a bribe from the lap,
    in order to pervert the ways of justice.
24 He who understands sets his face toward wisdom,
    but the eyes of a fool, to the end of the earth.[m]
25 A grief to his father is the child of a fool,
    and bitterness to her who bore him.
26 Also, imposing a fine on the righteous is not good,
    nor to flog nobles for uprightness.
27 He who spares his sayings knows knowledge,
    and a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
28 Even a fool who keeps silent shall be considered wise;[n]
    he who closes his lips is intelligent.
