⁷ They did battle against Midian, as the Lord had commanded Moses, and killed every male.

¹⁵ For when David was destroying^[a] Edom and Joab the commander of the army went up to bury the dead, he killed every male in Edom^{(A) 16} (for Joab and all Israel remained there six months until he had eliminated every male in Edom),

¹¹ This is what you shall do; every male and every woman who has lain with a male you shall devote to destruction.”^(A)

⁹ David struck the land, leaving neither man nor woman alive, but took away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the clothing and came back to Achish.^(A)

³³ Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east came together, and they crossed over and encamped in the Valley of Jezreel.^(A)

The Midianite Oppression

6 The Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian seven years.^{(A) 2} The hand of Midian prevailed over Israel, and because of Midian the Israelites provided for themselves hiding places in the mountains, caves and strongholds.

¹³ and when the Lord your God gives it into your hand, you shall put all its males to the sword. ¹⁴ You may, however, take as your plunder the women, the children, livestock, and everything else in the town, all its spoil. You may enjoy the spoil of your enemies, which the Lord your God has given you.^(A)
