⁴¹ Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part,^(A) as the Lord commanded Moses.^(B)

¹⁹ Whatever is set aside from the holy^(A) offerings the Israelites present to the Lord I give to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt^(B) before the Lord for both you and your offspring.”

Offerings for Priests and Levites

⁸ Then the Lord said to Aaron, “I myself have put you in charge of the offerings presented to me; all the holy offerings the Israelites give me I give to you and your sons as your portion,^(A) your perpetual share.^(B)

⁹ One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, ¹⁰ because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.

Jesus Like Melchizedek

¹¹ If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people^(A) established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come,^(B) one in the order of Melchizedek,^(C) not in the order of Aaron? ¹² For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also.

⁴ Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch^(A) Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!^{(B) 5} Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people^(C)—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. ⁶ This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed^(D) him who had the promises.^(E)

¹⁷ The elders^(A) who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor,^(B) especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.

⁶ Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.^(A)

¹⁰ Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us,^(A) because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest.^{(B) 11} If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?^{(C) 12} If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?

But we did not use this right.^(D) On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder^(E) the gospel of Christ.

¹³ Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar?^{(F) 14} In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.^(G)

¹⁰ no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.^(A)
