The Treasurers and Other Officials

20 Their fellow Levites(A) were[a] in charge of the treasuries of the house of God and the treasuries for the dedicated things.(B)

21 The descendants of Ladan, who were Gershonites through Ladan and who were heads of families belonging to Ladan the Gershonite,(C) were Jehieli, 22 the sons of Jehieli, Zetham and his brother Joel. They were in charge of the treasuries(D) of the temple of the Lord.

23 From the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites and the Uzzielites:(E)

24 Shubael,(F) a descendant of Gershom son of Moses, was the official in charge of the treasuries. 25 His relatives through Eliezer: Rehabiah his son, Jeshaiah his son, Joram his son, Zikri his son and Shelomith(G) his son. 26 Shelomith and his relatives were in charge of all the treasuries for the things dedicated(H) by King David, by the heads of families who were the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and by the other army commanders. 27 Some of the plunder taken in battle they dedicated for the repair of the temple of the Lord.

25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “Speak to the Levites and say to them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you(F) as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the Lord’s offering.(G) 27 Your offering will be reckoned(H) to you as grain from the threshing floor(I) or juice from the winepress.(J) 28 In this way you also will present an offering to the Lord from all the tithes(K) you receive from the Israelites. From these tithes you must give the Lord’s portion to Aaron the priest.

Duties of Priests and Levites

18 The Lord said to Aaron, “You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary,(A) and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood. Bring your fellow Levites from your ancestral tribe to join you and assist you when you and your sons minister(B) before the tent of the covenant law. They are to be responsible to you(C) and are to perform all the duties of the tent,(D) but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar. Otherwise both they and you will die.(E) They are to join you and be responsible for the care of the tent of meeting—all the work at the tent—and no one else may come near where you are.(F)

“You are to be responsible for the care of the sanctuary and the altar,(G) so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelites again.

36 The Merarites were appointed(A) to take care of the frames of the tabernacle,(B) its crossbars,(C) posts,(D) bases, all its equipment, and everything related to their use,(E) 37 as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard(F) with their bases, tent pegs(G) and ropes.

38 Moses and Aaron and his sons were to camp to the east(H) of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, in front of the tent of meeting.(I) They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary(J) on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.(K)

39 The total number of Levites counted(L) at the Lord’s command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000.(M)
