²⁹ The sons of ^(A)Manasseh: of ^(B)Machir, the family of the Machirites; and Machir begot Gilead; of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites.

17 There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the ^(A)firstborn of Joseph: namely for ^(B)Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war; therefore he was given ^(C)Gilead and Bashan.

The Family of Manasseh (West)

¹⁴ The ^(A)descendants of Manasseh: his Syrian concubine bore him ^(B)Machir the father of Gilead, the father of Asriel. ¹⁵ Machir took as his wife the sister of ^[a]Huppim and ^[b]Shuppim, whose name was Maachah. The name of Gilead’s ^[c]grandson was ^(C)Zelophehad, but Zelophehad begot only daughters. ¹⁶ (Maachah the wife of Machir bore a son, and she called his name Peresh. The name of his brother was Sheresh, and his sons were Ulam and Rakem. ¹⁷ The son of Ulam was ^(D)Bedan.) These were the descendants of Gilead the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh.

¹⁸ His sister Hammoleketh bore Ishhod, ^[d]Abiezer, and Mahlah.

¹⁹ And the sons of Shemida were Ahian, Shechem, Likhi, and Aniam.

Marriage of Female Heirs

36 Now the chief fathers of the families of the ^(A)children of Gilead the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and ^(B)spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the chief fathers of the children of Israel.

¹⁵ “Also I gave ^(A)Gilead to Machir.

³⁹ And the children of ^(A)Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and ^[a]dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. ⁴⁰ So Moses ^(B)gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it.

¹⁴ Then Israel stretched out his right hand and ^(A)laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, ^(B)guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the ^(C)firstborn.
