⁹ but those who died in the plague^(A) numbered 24,000.^(B)

⁸ We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.^(A)

⁴⁹ But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah.^{(A) 50} Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, for the plague had stopped.^[a]

³ You saw with your own eyes what the Lord did at Baal Peor.^(A) The Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, ⁴ but all of you who held fast to the Lord your God are still alive today.

¹⁶ “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice^(A) and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident,^(B) so that a plague^(C) struck the Lord’s people.

⁴ The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders^(A) of these people, kill them and expose^(B) them in broad daylight before the Lord,^(C) so that the Lord’s fierce anger^(D) may turn away from Israel.”

⁵ So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death^(E) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”^(F)

³⁷ these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report^(A) about the land were struck down and died of a plague^(B) before the Lord.
