⁸ and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;^(A)

⁴⁶ Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer^(A) and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly^(B) to make atonement^(C) for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord;^(D) the plague^(E) has started.” ⁴⁷ So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people,^(F) but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. ⁴⁸ He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.^(G)

²² David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”

²⁵ David built an altar^(A) to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the Lord answered his prayer^(B) in behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.

¹¹ “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.^(A) Since he was as zealous for my honor^(B) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal.

⁵ So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death^(A) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”^(B)
