17 “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls[a] of[b] all the people of Sheth.[c]
Numbers 24:17Samaritan Pentateuch (see also Jer. 48:45); the meaning of the word in the Masoretic Text is uncertain.
25 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh—26 Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab and all who live in the wilderness in distant places.[a] For all these nations are really uncircumcised, and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.”
Jeremiah 9:26Or wilderness and who clip the hair by their foreheads
17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent me drink it:18 Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin and an object of horror and scorn, a curse[a]—as they are today;19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his attendants, his officials and all his people,20 and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz; all the kings of the Philistines (those of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod);21 Edom, Moab and Ammon;22 all the kings of Tyre and Sidon; the kings of the coastlands across the sea;23 Dedan, Tema, Buz and all who are in distant places[b];24 all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the foreign people who live in the wilderness;25 all the kings of Zimri, Elam and Media;26 and all the kings of the north, near and far, one after the other—all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshak[c] will drink it too.
Jeremiah 25:18That is, their names to be used in cursing (see 29:22); or, to be seen by others as cursed
12 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Edom took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so,13 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and kill both man and beast. I will lay it waste, and from Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword.14 I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
“For three sins of Moab, even for four, I will not relent. Because he burned to ashes the bones of Edom’s king, 2 I will send fire on Moab that will consume the fortresses of Kerioth.[a] Moab will go down in great tumult amid war cries and the blast of the trumpet. 3 I will destroy her ruler and kill all her officials with him,” says the Lord.
“I will restore David’s fallen shelter— I will repair its broken walls and restore its ruins— and will rebuild it as it used to be, 12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name,[a]” declares the Lord, who will do these things.
Amos 9:12Hebrew; Septuagint so that the remnant of people / and all the nations that bear my name may seek me
