³ They quarreled^(A) with Moses and said, “If only we had died when our brothers fell dead^(B) before the Lord!^(C)

² So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water^(A) to drink.”^(B)

Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”^(C)

³¹ As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart^{(A) 32} and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them^(B) and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. ³³ They went down alive into the realm of the dead,^(C) with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. ³⁴ At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!”

³⁵ And fire came out from the Lord^(D) and consumed^(E) the 250 men who were offering the incense.

The People Rebel

14 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.^{(A) 2} All the Israelites grumbled^(B) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!^(C) Or in this wilderness!^(D)

⁴⁹ But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah.^(A)

³³ But while the meat was still between their teeth^(A) and before it could be consumed, the anger^(B) of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.^{(C) 34} Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah,^[a](D) because there they buried the people who had craved other food.

Fire From the Lord

11 Now the people complained^(A) about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord,^(B) and when he heard them his anger was aroused.^(C) Then fire from the Lord burned among them^(D) and consumed^(E) some of the outskirts of the camp.

² In the desert the whole community grumbled^(A) against Moses and Aaron. ³ The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt!^(B) There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food^(C) we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”^(D)
