⁴⁵ Then ^(A)the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to ^(B)Hormah.

³ And the Lord heeded the voice of Israel and gave over the Canaanites, and they devoted them and their cities to destruction. So the name of the place was called ^(A)Hormah.^[a]

^17 (A)And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to destruction. So the name of the city was called ^(B)Hormah.^[a]

^44 (A)Then the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you ^(B)as bees do and beat you down in Seir as far as ^(C)Hormah.

⁴³ For there ^(A)the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.”

¹¹ Israel has sinned; they have ^(A)transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the ^(B)devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. ^12 (C)Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They ^(D)turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become ^(E)devoted for destruction.^[a] I will be with you no more, unless you destroy ^(F)the devoted things from among you.

⁵ and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people ^(A)melted and became as water.

¹⁶ saying, “A hand upon the throne^[a] of the Lord! ^(A)The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
