³³ Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,^(A) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness.

³⁵ “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you have forgotten^(A) me and turned your back on me,^(B) you must bear^(C) the consequences of your lewdness and prostitution.”

¹³ The Lord’s anger burned against Israel^(A) and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.^(B)

¹⁴ Thirty-eight years^(A) passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea^(B) until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation^(C) of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.^(D)

Punishment for Israel

⁴⁵ But righteous judges will sentence them to the punishment of women who commit adultery and shed blood,^(A) because they are adulterous and blood is on their hands.^(B)

⁴⁶ “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Bring a mob^(C) against them and give them over to terror and plunder.^{(D) 47} The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords; they will kill their sons and daughters^(E) and burn^(F) down their houses.^(G)

⁴⁸ “So I will put an end^(H) to lewdness in the land, that all women may take warning and not imitate you.^{(I) 49} You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry.^(J) Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.^(K)”
