²⁸ Yet the people who live in the land are strong, and the towns are fortified and very large, and besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there.^(A)

The Consequences of Rebelling against God

9 “Hear, O Israel! You are about to cross the Jordan today, to go in and dispossess nations larger and mightier than you, great cities, fortified to the heavens,^{(A) 2} a strong and tall people, the offspring of the Anakim, whom you know. You have heard it said, ‘Who can stand up to the Anakim?’^(B)

²⁸ Where are we headed? Our kindred have made our hearts melt by reporting, “The people are stronger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified up to heaven! We actually saw there the offspring of the Anakim!” ’^(A)

³³ There we saw the Nephilim (the Anakites come from the Nephilim), and to ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”^(A)

¹⁴ And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.^(A)

²² None of the Anakim was left in the land of the Israelites; some remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.

¹⁰ (The Emim—a large and numerous people, as tall as the Anakim—had formerly inhabited it.^{(A) 11} Like the Anakim, they are usually reckoned as Rephaim, though the Moabites call them Emim.

²⁰ Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said, and he drove out from it the three sons of Anak.^(A)
