Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses

12 Miriam^(A) and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife,^(B) for he had married a Cushite.

²¹ Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah^(A) to Moses in marriage.

Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing

³⁴ When Esau was forty years old,^(A) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.^{(B) 35} They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.^(C)

⁴⁶ Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite^(A) women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land,^(B) from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”^(C)

³⁷ And my master made me swear an oath,^(A) and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,^(B)

¹⁶ Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?^(A)

¹⁴ They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised.^(A) That would be a disgrace to us. ¹⁵ We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition^(B) only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.^(C)

⁶ Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”^{(A) 7} and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. ⁸ Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women^(B) were to his father Isaac;^{(C) 9} so he went to Ishmael^(D) and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth^(E) and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.^(F)

³ I want you to swear^(A) by the Lord, the God of heaven^(B) and the God of earth,^(C) that you will not get a wife for my son^(D) from the daughters of the Canaanites,^(E) among whom I am living,^(F)
