^50 (A)but you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, over all its furnishings, and over all things that belong to it; they shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they shall attend to it ^(B)and camp around the tabernacle.

Materials of the Tabernacle

^21 [a]This is the inventory of the tabernacle, ^(A)the tabernacle of the Testimony, which was counted according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites, ^(B)by the hand of ^(C)Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest.

¹⁵ And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is set to go, then ^(A)the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them; ^(B)but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die.

“^(C)These are the things in the tabernacle of meeting which the sons of Kohath are to carry.

¹⁸ And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses ^(A)two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.

²² And I commanded the Levites that ^(A)they should cleanse themselves, and that they should go and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day.

Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy!

¹⁰ I also realized that the portions for the Levites had ^(A)not been given them; for each of the Levites and the singers who did the work had gone back to ^(B)his field. ¹¹ So ^(C)I contended with the rulers, and said, ^(D)“Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their place. ^12 (E)Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the storehouse. ^13 (F)And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouse Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah; and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were considered ^(G)faithful, and their task was to distribute to their brethren.

The Divisions of the Levites

23 So when David was old and full of days, he made his son ^(A)Solomon king over Israel.

² And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel, with the priests and the Levites. ³ Now the Levites were numbered from the age of ^(B)thirty years and above; and the number of individual males was thirty-eight thousand. ⁴ Of these, twenty-four thousand were to ^(C)look after the work of the house of the Lord, six thousand were ^(D)officers and judges, ⁵ four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand ^(E)praised the Lord with musical instruments, ^(F)“which I made,” said David, “for giving praise.”

⁶ Also ^(G)David separated them into ^[a]divisions among the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

⁷ Of the ^(H)Gershonites: ^[b]Laadan and Shimei. ⁸ The sons of Laadan: the first Jehiel, then Zetham and Joel—three in all. ⁹ The sons of Shimei: Shelomith, Haziel, and Haran—three in all. These were the heads of the fathers’ houses of Laadan. ¹⁰ And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, ^[c]Zina, Jeush, and Beriah. These were the four sons of Shimei. ¹¹ Jahath was the first and Zizah the second. But Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; therefore they were assigned as one father’s house.

^12 (I)The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel—four in all. ¹³ The sons of ^(J)Amram: Aaron and Moses; and ^(K)Aaron was set apart, he and his sons forever, that he should ^[d]sanctify the most holy things, ^(L)to burn incense before the Lord, ^(M)to minister to Him, and ^(N)to give the blessing in His name forever. ¹⁴ Now ^(O)the sons of Moses the man of God were reckoned to the tribe of Levi. ^15 (P)The sons of Moses were ^[e]Gershon and Eliezer. ¹⁶ Of the sons of Gershon, ^(Q)Shebuel^[f] was the first. ¹⁷ Of the descendants of Eliezer, ^(R)Rehabiah was the first. And Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many. ¹⁸ Of the sons of Izhar, ^(S)Shelomith was the first. ^19 (T)Of the sons of Hebron, Jeriah was the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. ²⁰ Of the sons of Uzziel, Michah was the first and Jesshiah the second.

^21 (U)The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and ^(V)Kish. ²² And Eleazar died, and ^(W)had no sons, but only daughters; and their ^[g]brethren, the sons of Kish, ^(X)took them as wives. ^23 (Y)The sons of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth—three in all.

²⁴ These were the sons of ^(Z)Levi by their fathers’ houses—the heads of the fathers’ houses as they were counted individually by the number of their names, who did the work for the service of the house of the Lord, from the age of ^(AA)twenty years and above.

²⁵ For David said, “The Lord God of Israel ^(AB)has given rest to His people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem forever”; ²⁶ and also to the Levites, “They shall no longer ^(AC)carry the tabernacle, or any of the articles for its service.” ²⁷ For by the ^(AD)last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above; ²⁸ because their duty was to help the sons of Aaron in the service of the house of the Lord, in the courts and in the chambers, in the purifying of all holy things and the work of the service of the house of God, ²⁹ both with ^(AE)the showbread and ^(AF)the fine flour for the grain offering, with ^(AG)the unleavened cakes and ^(AH)what is baked in the pan, with what is mixed and with all kinds of ^(AI)measures and sizes; ³⁰ to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord, and likewise at evening; ³¹ and at every presentation of a burnt offering to the Lord ^(AJ)on the Sabbaths and on the New Moons and on the ^(AK)set^[h] feasts, by number according to the ordinance governing them, regularly before the Lord; ³² and that they should ^(AL)attend to the ^(AM)needs of the tabernacle of meeting, the needs of the holy place, and the ^(AN)needs of the sons of Aaron their brethren in the work of the house of the Lord.

¹¹ Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; ^(A)and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.

^25 (A)They shall carry the ^(B)curtains of the tabernacle and the tabernacle of meeting with its covering, the covering of ^(C)badger skins that is on it, the screen for the door of the tabernacle of meeting, ²⁶ the screen for the door of the gate of the court, the hangings of the court which are around the tabernacle and altar, and their cords, all the furnishings for their service and all that is made for these things: so shall they serve.

²⁷ “Aaron and his sons shall ^[a]assign all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, all their tasks and all their service. And you shall ^[b]appoint to them all their tasks as their duty. ²⁸ This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of meeting. And their duties shall be ^(D)under the ^[c]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

Duties of the Sons of Merari

²⁹ “As for the sons of ^(E)Merari, you shall number them by their families and by their fathers’ house. ^30 (F)From thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, you shall number them, everyone who enters the service to do the work of the tabernacle of meeting. ³¹ And ^(G)this is ^(H)what they must carry as all their service for the tabernacle of meeting: ^(I)the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, ³² and the pillars around the court with their sockets, pegs, and cords, with all their furnishings and all their service; and you shall ^(J)assign to each man by name the items he must carry. ³³ This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, as all their service for the tabernacle of meeting, under the ^[d]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”
