²⁰ Now the ^(A)children of Reuben, Israel’s oldest son, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, every male individually, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war:

^5 (A)Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. The children of Reuben were: of Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites; ⁶ of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites. ⁷ These are the families of the Reubenites: those who were numbered of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty.

¹⁰ “On the ^(A)south side shall be the standard of the forces with Reuben according to their armies, and the leader of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.” ¹¹ And his army was numbered at forty-six thousand five hundred.

The Family of Reuben^(A)

5 Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel—^(B)he was indeed the firstborn, but because he ^(C)defiled his father’s bed, ^(D)his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, so that the genealogy is not listed according to the birthright;

⁹ The ^(A)sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

³² So Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name ^[a]Reuben; for she said, “The Lord has surely ^(A)looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me.”
