¹³ And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them ^(A)wander in the wilderness forty years, until ^(B)all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone.

⁵ Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for ^(A)they were overthrown^[a] in the wilderness.

³³ And your children ^(A)shall be shepherds in the wilderness ^(B)forty years and shall ^(C)suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. ^34 (D)According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, ^(E)forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ ^35 (F)I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all ^(G)this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”

¹⁶ For ^(A)who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not ^(B)all those who left Egypt led by Moses? ¹⁷ And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, ^(C)whose bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did he swear that ^(D)they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ So we see that ^(E)they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

¹⁴ And the time from our leaving ^(A)Kadesh-barnea until we crossed ^(B)the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, ^(C)until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them. ¹⁵ For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished.
