²³ not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath^(A) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt^(B) will ever see it.^(C)

¹¹ ‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more^(A) when they came up out of Egypt^(B) will see the land I promised on oath^(C) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob^(D)—

¹⁵ Also with uplifted hand I swore^(A) to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands^(B)—

⁶⁴ Not one of them was among those counted^(A) by Moses and Aaron^(B) the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai.

¹⁷ And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?^{(A) 18} And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest^(B) if not to those who disobeyed?^(C)

³⁵ “No one from this evil generation shall see the good land^(A) I swore to give your ancestors, ³⁶ except Caleb^(B) son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land he set his feet on, because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly.^(C)”

³⁷ Because of you the Lord became angry^(D) with me also and said, “You shall not enter^(E) it, either. ³⁸ But your assistant, Joshua^(F) son of Nun, will enter it. Encourage^(G) him, because he will lead^(H) Israel to inherit^(I) it. ³⁹ And the little ones that you said would be taken captive,^(J) your children who do not yet know^(K) good from bad—they will enter the land. I will give it to them and they will take possession of it. ⁴⁰ But as for you, turn around and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.^[a](L)”

⁴¹ Then you replied, “We have sinned against the Lord. We will go up and fight, as the Lord our God commanded us.” So every one of you put on his weapons, thinking it easy to go up into the hill country.

⁴² But the Lord said to me, “Tell them, ‘Do not go up and fight, because I will not be with you. You will be defeated by your enemies.’”^(M)

⁴³ So I told you, but you would not listen. You rebelled against the Lord’s command and in your arrogance you marched up into the hill country. ⁴⁴ The Amorites who lived in those hills came out against you; they chased you like a swarm of bees^(N) and beat you down from Seir^(O) all the way to Hormah.^{(P) 45} You came back and wept before the Lord,^(Q) but he paid no attention^(R) to your weeping and turned a deaf ear^(S) to you.

³ Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world.
