Caleb's Request and Inheritance

Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the (A)Kenizzite said to him, “You know (B)what the Lord said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord (C)sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. But (D)my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the Lord my God. And Moses swore on that day, saying, (E)‘Surely the land (F)on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ 10 And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, (G)just as he said, these (H)forty-five years since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day (I)eighty-five years old. 11 (J)I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and (K)for going and coming. 12 So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the (L)Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.”

13 Then Joshua (M)blessed him, and he gave (N)Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. 14 Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, (O)because he wholly followed the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 (P)Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba.[a] (Arba[b] was the greatest man among the Anakim.) (Q)And the land had rest from war.

Allotment for Caleb

Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal,(A) and Caleb son of Jephunneh(B) the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God(C) at Kadesh Barnea(D) about you and me.(E) I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea(F) to explore the land.(G) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,(H) but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear.(I) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.(J) So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance(K) and that of your children(L) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’[a]

10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised,(M) he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved(N) about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!(O) 11 I am still as strong(P) today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous(Q) to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day.(R) You yourself heard then that the Anakites(S) were there and their cities were large and fortified,(T) but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

13 Then Joshua blessed(U) Caleb son of Jephunneh(V) and gave him Hebron(W) as his inheritance.(X) 14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.(Y) 15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba(Z) after Arba,(AA) who was the greatest man among the Anakites.)

Then the land had rest(AB) from war.

Then (A)Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, (B)“Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it. It is the Lord (C)who goes before you. He will be with you; (D)he will not leave you or forsake you. (E)Do not fear or be dismayed.”

The Reading of the Law

Then Moses (F)wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, (G)who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 And Moses commanded them, (H)“At the end of every seven years, at the set time in the year of release, at (I)the Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes (J)to appear before the Lord your God at the place that he will choose, (K)you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12 (L)Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, 13 and that their children, (M)who have not known it, (N)may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, (O)as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”

Joshua Commissioned to Lead Israel

14 And the Lord said to Moses, (P)“Behold, the days approach when you must die. Call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that (Q)I may commission him.” And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting. 15 And (R)the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud. And the pillar of cloud stood over the entrance of the tent.

16 And the Lord said to Moses, (S)“Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise and (T)whore after the foreign gods among them in the land that they are entering, and they will (U)forsake me and (V)break my covenant that I have made with them. 17 Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day, and (W)I will forsake them and (X)hide my face from them, and they will be devoured. And many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, (Y)‘Have not these evils come upon us because (Z)our God is not among us?’

Then Moses summoned Joshua and said(A) to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them,(B) and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;(C) he will never leave you nor forsake you.(D) Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Public Reading of the Law

So Moses wrote(E) down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried(F) the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts,(G) during the Festival of Tabernacles,(H) 11 when all Israel comes to appear(I) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose,(J) you shall read this law(K) before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn(L) to fear(M) the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children,(N) who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Israel’s Rebellion Predicted

14 The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death(O) is near. Call Joshua(P) and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.(Q)” So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.(R)

15 Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.(S) 16 And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors,(T) and these people will soon prostitute(U) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake(V) me and break the covenant I made with them. 17 And in that day I will become angry(W) with them and forsake(X) them; I will hide(Y) my face(Z) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters(AA) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’(AB)
