Les villes des lévites
35 L’Eternel parla à Moïse, dans les steppes de Moab, sur la rive du Jourdain en face de Jéricho, en disant : 2 Ordonne aux Israélites de donner aux lévites sur la part de propriété qu’ils recevront, des villes où ils pourront s’établir avec des pâturages autour d’elles[a]. 3 Ces villes leur serviront de résidence ; et ils disposeront des terres alentour pour leur bétail, leurs biens et tous leurs animaux. 4 Les terrains attenant aux villes que vous donnerez aux lévites s’étendront sur une distance de cinq cents mètres tout autour, à partir du mur de la ville. 5 Vous délimiterez donc, à l’extérieur de la ville, un carré de mille mètres[b] de côté au milieu duquel se situera la ville. Tels seront les territoires autour de leurs villes. 6 Vous donnerez aux lévites les six villes de refuge que vous aurez désignées pour que des meurtriers involontaires puissent s’y réfugier ainsi que quarante-deux autres villes, 7 vous leur céderez donc en tout quarante-huit villes, chacune avec ses terres avoisinantes. 8 Vous prendrez ces villes sur les patrimoines fonciers des Israélites, en en prenant davantage des tribus qui ont reçu un plus grand nombre de villes, et moins de celles qui en ont moins ; chaque tribu cédera de ses villes aux lévites en proportion du territoire qu’elle aura reçu.
Les villes de refuge
9 L’Eternel parla encore à Moïse, et lui dit : 10 Dis aux Israélites : Vous allez traverser le Jourdain pour entrer dans le pays de Canaan, 11 et vous vous choisirez des villes qui vous serviront de cités de refuge où pourront se réfugier les auteurs d’homicides involontaires[c]. 12 Ces villes vous serviront d’asile pour protéger le meurtrier de l’homme chargé de punir le crime[d], afin qu’un meurtrier ne soit pas mis à mort avant d’avoir comparu devant la communauté pour être jugé. 13 Vous désignerez six villes de refuge : 14 trois villes au-delà du Jourdain, et trois autres dans le pays de Canaan. Elles serviront de refuge 15 aux Israélites, à l’immigré et au résident qui demeurera au milieu de vous ; quiconque aura tué quelqu’un involontairement pourra s’y réfugier.
16 S’il a frappé avec un objet en fer et causé la mort, c’est un meurtrier ; il sera puni de mort. 17-18 Il en sera de même s’il était armé d’une pierre ou d’un instrument en bois capable de causer la mort. 19 L’homme chargé de punir le crime le mettra à mort dès qu’il le trouvera. 20-21 S’il lui a lancé un projectile avec préméditation ou s’il l’a frappé du poing avec inimitié, et qu’il a causé sa mort, c’est un meurtrier : l’homme chargé de punir le crime le mettra à mort dès qu’il le trouvera.
22 Mais s’il l’a bousculé par accident et non par inimitié, ou lui a lancé un projectile sans mauvaise intention, 23 ou s’il a fait tomber sur lui une pierre sans l’avoir vu, et qu’il a causé sa mort sans avoir d’intention hostile à son égard et sans avoir cherché à lui faire de mal, 24 la communauté prononcera un jugement selon ces règles entre l’auteur de la mort et l’homme chargé de punir le crime. 25 Elle délivrera le meurtrier de l’homme chargé de punir le crime et le fera retourner dans la ville de refuge où il s’était réfugié.
Il devra y rester jusqu’à la mort du grand-prêtre qui a été oint d’huile sainte. 26 Mais s’il quitte l’enceinte de la ville de refuge où il s’est retiré, 27 et si l’homme chargé de punir le crime le rencontre à l’extérieur du territoire de sa ville de refuge et le tue, cet homme ne sera pas coupable de crime. 28 Car le meurtrier doit demeurer dans sa ville de refuge jusqu’à la mort du grand-prêtre ; après cela il pourra retourner sur les terres qui lui appartiennent.
29 Ces ordonnances auront pour vous force de loi, pour toutes les générations, partout où vous habiterez. 30 Toutes les fois qu’un meurtre aura été commis, c’est seulement sur la déposition de plusieurs témoins que le meurtrier sera mis à mort. La déclaration d’un seul témoin n’est pas suffisante pour prononcer une condamnation à la peine capitale[e].
31 D’autre part, vous n’accepterez pas de rançon en échange de la vie d’un meurtrier qui a été reconnu coupable d’un crime méritant la mort ; il doit être mis à mort. 32 Vous n’en accepterez pas non plus pour que le meurtrier qui s’est retiré dans sa ville de refuge puisse retourner habiter chez lui avant la mort du prêtre. 33 Ne profanez pas le pays où vous vous trouvez : en effet, le sang versé profane le pays ; car, pour le pays, il n’y a pas d’expiation pour le sang qui y a été versé sinon par le sang de celui qui l’a répandu. 34 Vous ne rendrez pas impur le pays où vous demeurerez et dans lequel j’habiterai, car je suis l’Eternel, qui habite au milieu des Israélites.

4 »Las tierras de pastoreo que entreguéis a los levitas rodearán la ciudad, a quinientos metros[a] de la muralla. 5 A partir de los límites de la ciudad, vosotros mediréis mil metros[b] hacia el este, mil hacia el sur, mil hacia el oeste y mil hacia el norte. La ciudad quedará en el centro. Estas serán las tierras de pastoreo de sus ciudades.
6 »De las ciudades que recibirán los levitas, seis serán ciudades de refugio. A ellas podrá huir cualquiera que haya matado a alguien. Además de estas seis ciudades, les entregaréis otras cuarenta y dos. 7 En total, les daréis cuarenta y ocho ciudades con sus tierras de pastoreo. 8 El número de ciudades que los israelitas entreguéis a los levitas de la tierra que vais a heredar deberá ser proporcional a la heredad que le corresponda a cada tribu. Es decir, de una tribu numerosa se tomará un número mayor de ciudades, mientras que de una tribu pequeña se tomará un número menor de ciudades».
Ciudades de refugio
9 El Señor le ordenó a Moisés 10 que les dijera a los israelitas: «Cuando crucéis el Jordán y entréis a Canaán, 11 escoged ciudades de refugio adonde pueda huir quien inadvertidamente mate a alguien. 12 Esa persona podrá huir a esas ciudades para protegerse del vengador. Así se evitará que se mate al homicida antes de ser juzgado por la comunidad.
13 »Seis serán las ciudades que reservaréis como ciudades de refugio. 14 Tres de ellas estarán en el lado este del Jordán y las otras tres, en Canaán. 15 Estas seis ciudades les servirán de refugio a los israelitas y a los extranjeros, sean estos inmigrantes o residentes. Cualquiera que inadvertidamente dé muerte a alguien podrá refugiarse en estas ciudades.
16 »Si alguien golpea a una persona con un objeto de hierro, y esa persona muere, el agresor es un asesino y será condenado a muerte.
17 »Si alguien golpea a una persona con una piedra, y esa persona muere, el agresor es un asesino y será condenado a muerte.
18 »Si alguien golpea a una persona con un pedazo de madera, y esa persona muere, el agresor es un asesino y será condenado a muerte. 19 Corresponderá al vengador matar al asesino. Cuando lo encuentre, lo matará.
20 »Si alguien mata a una persona por haberla empujado con malas intenciones, o por haberle lanzado algo intencionalmente, 21 o por haberle dado un puñetazo por enemistad, el agresor es un asesino y será condenado a muerte. Cuando el vengador lo encuentre, lo matará.
22 »Pero podría ocurrir que alguien sin querer empuje a una persona, o que sin mala intención le lance algún objeto, 23 o que sin darse cuenta le deje caer una piedra, y que esa persona muera. Como en este caso ellos no eran enemigos, ni hubo intención de hacer daño, 24 será la comunidad la que, de acuerdo con estas leyes, deberá arbitrar entre el acusado y el vengador. 25 La comunidad deberá proteger del vengador al acusado, dejando que el acusado regrese a la ciudad de refugio adonde huyó, y que se quede allí hasta la muerte del sumo sacerdote que fue ungido con el aceite sagrado.
26 »Pero, si el acusado sale de los límites de la ciudad de refugio adonde huyó, 27 el vengador podrá matarlo, y no será culpable de homicidio si lo encuentra fuera de la ciudad. 28 Así que el acusado debe permanecer en su ciudad de refugio hasta la muerte del sumo sacerdote. Después de eso podrá volver a su heredad.
29 »Esta ley regirá siempre sobre todos tus descendientes, dondequiera que viváis.
30 »Solo por el testimonio de varios testigos se le podrá dar muerte a una persona acusada de homicidio. Nadie podrá ser condenado a muerte por el testimonio de un solo testigo.
31 »No aceptarás rescate por la vida de un asesino condenado a muerte. Tendrá que morir.
32 »Tampoco aceptarás rescate para permitir que el refugiado regrese a vivir a su tierra antes de la muerte del sumo sacerdote.
33 »No profanes la tierra que habitas. El derramamiento de sangre contamina la tierra, y solo con la sangre de aquel que la derramó es posible hacer expiación en favor de la tierra.
34 »No profanes la tierra donde vives, y donde yo también vivo, porque yo, el Señor, habito entre los israelitas».

Towns for the Levites
35 On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho,(A) the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Command the Israelites to give the Levites towns to live in(B) from the inheritance the Israelites will possess. And give them pasturelands(C) around the towns. 3 Then they will have towns to live in and pasturelands for the cattle they own and all their other animals.(D)
4 “The pasturelands around the towns that you give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits[a] from the town wall. 5 Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits[b](E) on the east side, two thousand on the south side, two thousand on the west and two thousand on the north, with the town in the center. They will have this area as pastureland for the towns.(F)
Cities of Refuge(G)
6 “Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee.(H) In addition, give them forty-two other towns. 7 In all you must give the Levites forty-eight towns, together with their pasturelands. 8 The towns you give the Levites from the land the Israelites possess are to be given in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: Take many towns from a tribe that has many, but few from one that has few.”(I)
9 Then the Lord said to Moses: 10 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you cross the Jordan into Canaan,(J) 11 select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone(K) accidentally(L) may flee. 12 They will be places of refuge from the avenger,(M) so that anyone accused of murder(N) may not die before they stand trial before the assembly.(O) 13 These six towns you give will be your cities of refuge.(P) 14 Give three on this side of the Jordan and three in Canaan as cities of refuge. 15 These six towns will be a place of refuge for Israelites and for foreigners residing among them, so that anyone who has killed another accidentally can flee there.
16 “‘If anyone strikes someone a fatal blow with an iron object, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death.(Q) 17 Or if anyone is holding a stone and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. 18 Or if anyone is holding a wooden object and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. 19 The avenger of blood(R) shall put the murderer to death; when the avenger comes upon the murderer, the avenger shall put the murderer to death.(S) 20 If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at them intentionally(T) so that they die 21 or if out of enmity one person hits another with their fist so that the other dies, that person is to be put to death;(U) that person is a murderer. The avenger of blood(V) shall put the murderer to death when they meet.
22 “‘But if without enmity someone suddenly pushes another or throws something at them unintentionally(W) 23 or, without seeing them, drops on them a stone heavy enough to kill them, and they die, then since that other person was not an enemy and no harm was intended, 24 the assembly(X) must judge between the accused and the avenger of blood according to these regulations. 25 The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send the accused back to the city of refuge to which they fled. The accused must stay there until the death of the high priest,(Y) who was anointed(Z) with the holy oil.(AA)
26 “‘But if the accused ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which they fled 27 and the avenger of blood finds them outside the city, the avenger of blood may kill the accused without being guilty of murder. 28 The accused must stay in the city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the death of the high priest may they return to their own property.
29 “‘This is to have the force of law(AB) for you throughout the generations to come,(AC) wherever you live.(AD)
30 “‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.(AE)
31 “‘Do not accept a ransom(AF) for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. They are to be put to death.
32 “‘Do not accept a ransom for anyone who has fled to a city of refuge and so allow them to go back and live on their own land before the death of the high priest.
33 “‘Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land,(AG) and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it. 34 Do not defile the land(AH) where you live and where I dwell,(AI) for I, the Lord, dwell among the Israelites.’”

25 And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil.
26 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;
27 And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:
28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.
29 So these things shall be for a statute of judgment unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
30 Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.
31 Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.
32 And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
33 So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.
34 Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the Lord dwell among the children of Israel.
