5 Men männen och deras hustrur började klaga högt över sina judiska bröder. 2 Några sade: ”Med våra söner och döttrar är vi många. Vi måste få säd, så att vi kan äta och överleva!” 3 Andra sade: ”Vi måste pantsätta våra åkrar, vingårdar och hus för att få säd mot svälten.” 4 Åter andra sade: ”Vi har varit tvungna att låna pengar på våra åkrar och vingårdar för att betala skatten till kungen. 5 Vi är av samma kött och blod som våra bröder, och våra barn är som deras barn. Men ändå måste vi lämna bort våra söner och döttrar som slavar[a]. Några av våra döttrar har redan blivit slavar, och vi står maktlösa. Och våra åkrar och vingårdar är i andras händer.”
6 Jag blev mycket upprörd när jag hörde vad de sade och hur de klagade. 7 (A) Jag överlade med mig själv och tillrättavisade stormännen och föreståndarna och sade till dem: ”Ni bedriver ocker mot era bröder!” Därefter kallade jag samman en stor folkförsamling mot dem 8 och sade till dem: ”Vi har efter förmåga friköpt våra judiska bröder som var sålda åt hednafolken. Ska nu ni sälja era bröder? Eller ska de sälja sig åt oss?” De teg och kunde inte svara ett ord.
9 (B) Jag sade: ”Det ni gör är inte rätt. Borde ni inte vandra i fruktan för vår Gud, så att våra fiender, hednafolken, inte får orsak att håna oss? 10 Även jag och mina bröder och mina tjänare har lånat dem pengar och säd. Låt oss nu avstå från vår fordran. 11 Lämna redan idag tillbaka deras åkrar, vingårdar, olivlundar och hus till dem, och ta inte ut den ränta på pengarna, säden, vinet och oljan som ni har att fordra av dem.” 12 De svarade: ”Vi ska ge tillbaka det och inte utkräva något av dem. Vi ska göra som du har sagt.” Sedan jag hade kallat till mig prästerna, lät jag dem svära på att de skulle göra som de hade lovat. 13 Dessutom skakade jag framstycket på min mantel och sade: ”Var och en som inte håller sitt löfte, honom må Gud skaka bort från hans hem och allt han äger. Ja, han ska bli utskakad och berövad allt.” Och hela församlingen sade: ”Amen!”, och de prisade Herren. Sedan gjorde folket som de hade lovat.
Nehemjas uppoffringar för arbetet
14 Ända från den dag då jag utsågs till deras ståthållare i Juda land, från kung Artashastas tjugonde regeringsår till hans trettioandra, tolv år[b], åt varken jag eller mina bröder den mat som en ståthållare har rätt till. 15 Tidigare ståthållare, de som var före mig, hade lagt bördor på folket och tagit mat och vin av dem och dessutom fyrtio siklar silver[c]. Även deras tjänare uppträdde som herrar mot folket. Men så gjorde inte jag, för jag fruktade Gud. 16 (C) Jag fortsatte också att arbeta på muren, och vi köpte oss ingen åker, och alla mina tjänare deltog i arbetet där.
17 Och vid mitt bord åt hundrafemtio man av judarna och deras föreståndare, förutom de som kom till oss från folken runt omkring. 18 Varje dag tillagades på min bekostnad en oxe, sex utsökta får och dessutom fåglar. Var tionde dag skaffades en mängd vin av olika sorter. Ändå krävde jag inte att få ut det underhåll som ståthållaren hade rätt till, eftersom arbetet tyngde folket så hårt. 19 (D) Tänk, min Gud, på allt vad jag har gjort för detta folk och räkna mig det till godo.

Nehemja på de fattigas sida
5 Vid den tiden protesterade många mot den ekonomiska orättvisa som rådde i landet, och även kvinnorna engagerade sig.
2 Det var ont om mat. Många saknade helt utsäde för den nödvändiga försörjningen.
3 Andra var tvungna att lämna sin mark och till och med sina barn som säkerhet för att låna till utsäde.
4 Ytterligare andra måste låna för att kunna betala skatten på sina fält och vingårdar.
5 Vi är deras bröder, och våra barn är lika goda som deras, protesterade de behövande. Ändå måste vi sälja våra barn som slavar för att överleva. Vi har redan sålt en del av våra döttrar, och vi har ingen möjlighet att köpa dem tillbaka, för våra åkrar är också belånade.
6 Jag blev mycket upprörd när jag fick höra detta,
7 och sedan jag tänkt på saken tog jag upp den med de rika och välbärgade.Vad gör ni egentligen, undrade jag. Förstår ni inte att ni med ert ocker ruinerar era bröder? Sedan sammankallade jag till ett stormöte.
8 En del av oss gör allt vi kan för att hjälpa våra judiska bröder, som har kommit tillbaka från sin fångenskap i andra länder, sa jag till dem. Nu gör ni dem till slavar på nytt. Ska vi behöva köpa dem fria igen? Men de hade inget att säga till sitt försvar.
9 Då fortsatte jag: Det ni gör är en stor synd. Ni borde ha större respekt för Gud! Har vi inte tillräckligt med fiender bland folken runt omkring, som försöker komma åt oss?
10 Några av oss lånar ut pengar och säd till våra judiska bröder utan att begära ränta. Nu måste ni sluta med detta ocker.
11 Lämna tillbaka deras åkrar, vingårdar, olivplanteringar och hem, och avskriv alla fordringar ni har!
12 De gav efter och lovade att bistå sina landsmän. Sedan sammankallade jag prästerna och fick dessa att avlägga en ed på att de skulle hålla sina löften.
13 Jag påminde dem om allvaret i situationen och sa: Gud kommer att vända sig bort från var och en av er som inte håller dessa löften.Amen, ropade alla de närvarande och prisade Herren. De anklagade höll sitt löfte och gjorde vad som förväntades av dem.
14 Under de tolv år jag var landshövding i Juda, från det tjugonde till det trettioandra året under kung Artasastas regering, tog mina medhjälpare och jag själv varken emot lön eller underhåll från Israels folk.
15 Detta i motsats till de tidigare landshövdingarna, som förutom mat och dryck hade begärt 40 siklar silver. Dessutom hade deras tjänare många gånger tyranniserat folket. Men jag lydde Gud och behandlade dem aldrig på det sättet.
16 Jag ägnade mig åt arbetet på muren, och mina tjänstemän var där av samma skäl. Ingen av oss skaffade sig egen mark.
17 Varje dag åt inte mindre än 150 landsmän som arbetade med mig vid mitt bord, förutom alla besökare från andra länder!
18 För varje dag gick det åt en oxe, sex gödda får och åtskilligt med fågel. Var tionde dag fick jag förnya förråden av vin.
19 Herre, kom ihåg allt jag gjort för detta folk, och låt mig få uppleva välsignelser för det!

Nehemiah Helps the Poor
5 Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their fellow Jews. 2 Some were saying, “We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain.”
3 Others were saying, “We are mortgaging our fields,(A) our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine.”(B)
4 Still others were saying, “We have had to borrow money to pay the king’s tax(C) on our fields and vineyards. 5 Although we are of the same flesh and blood(D) as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery.(E) Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”(F)
6 When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry. 7 I pondered them in my mind and then accused the nobles and officials. I told them, “You are charging your own people interest!”(G) So I called together a large meeting to deal with them 8 and said: “As far as possible, we have bought(H) back our fellow Jews who were sold to the Gentiles. Now you are selling your own people, only for them to be sold back to us!” They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say.(I)
9 So I continued, “What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach(J) of our Gentile enemies? 10 I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let us stop charging interest!(K) 11 Give back to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves and houses, and also the interest(L) you are charging them—one percent of the money, grain, new wine and olive oil.”
12 “We will give it back,” they said. “And we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say.”
Then I summoned the priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath(M) to do what they had promised. 13 I also shook(N) out the folds of my robe and said, “In this way may God shake out of their house and possessions anyone who does not keep this promise. So may such a person be shaken out and emptied!”
At this the whole assembly said, “Amen,”(O) and praised the Lord. And the people did as they had promised.
14 Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes,(P) when I was appointed to be their governor(Q) in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year—twelve years—neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor. 15 But the earlier governors—those preceding me—placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels[a] of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God(R) I did not act like that. 16 Instead,(S) I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we[b] did not acquire any land.
17 Furthermore, a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as those who came to us from the surrounding nations. 18 Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry(T) were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people.
19 Remember(U) me with favor, my God, for all I have done for these people.

2 For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.
3 Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.
4 There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.
5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.
6 And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.
7 Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.
8 And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.
9 Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?
10 I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.
11 Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.
12 Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
13 Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord. And the people did according to this promise.
14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.
15 But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.
16 Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.
17 Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.
18 Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.
19 Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
