Inga främlingar i templet
13 När man samma dag läste Moses lag, fann man ett avsnitt där det sas att ammoniterna och moabiterna aldrig skulle tillåtas att fira gudstjänst i templet.
2 De hade nämligen inte bistått israeliterna med mat och dryck utan i stället lejt Bileam att förbanna dem, även om Gud vände förbannelsen till välsignelse.
3 När detta påbud lästes, uteslöts omedelbart alla utlänningar från Israels folk.
4 Innan detta hände hade prästen Eljasib, en god vän till Tobia, blivit utsedd att förestå förråden i templet.
5 Han hade inrett ett av förrådsrummen till Tobia. Tidigare hade rummet använts för att förvara spisoffret, rökelsen och kärlen samt tiondet av säden, det nya vinet och olivoljan. Mose hade föreskrivit att dessa offer skulle tillhöra leviterna, sångarna och dörrvakterna.
6 Jag var inte i Jerusalem vid den tiden, för jag återvände till Babylon under det trettioandra året av kung Artasastas regering, även om jag senare fick tillåtelse att återvända till Jerusalem.
7 När jag kom tillbaka till Jerusalem och fick reda på att Eljasib hade inrett ett rum åt Tobia i själva templet,
8 blev jag mycket upprörd och kastade ut alla hans tillhörigheter därifrån.
9 Sedan befallde jag att man genast skulle rena platsen, och jag hämtade tillbaka tempelkärlen, spisoffren och rökelsen.
Leviterna återinkallas
10 Jag fick också reda på att leviterna inte fått vad de var berättigade till, och därför hade de och sångarna som skulle leda gudstjänsterna tvingats att återvända till sina åkrar.
11 Då kallade jag genast samman ledarna och frågade dem: Varför står Guds hus övergivet? Sedan kallade jag tillbaka leviterna och återinsatte dem i deras tjänster,
12 och än en gång började folket i Juda bära fram tionde av säd, vin och olja till templets förråd.
13 Jag tillsatte prästen Selemja och Sadok, den skriftlärde, tillsammans med Pedalja, en av leviterna, till att vara förvaltare över förrådshusen, och till deras assistent utsåg jag Hanan, som var son till Sackur och sonson till Mattanja. Dessa män hade ett gott anseende, och deras uppgift var nu att rättvist ombesörja utdelningen till sina bröder.
14 Herre, kom ihåg allt detta, och glöm inte allt jag har gjort för templet!
Inget arbete på sabbaten
15 En sabbat fick jag i Juda se män som trampade sin vinpress och andra som körde hem säd eller lastade sina åsnor med vin, druvor, fikon och alla slags varor för att frakta detta till Jerusalem. Jag varnade dem offentligt.
16 Det fanns också några där från Tyrus, som förde in fisk och annat till försäljning på sabbaten.
17 Då frågade jag ledarna i Juda: Varför missbrukar ni sabbaten?
18 Är det inte nog att era förfäder gjorde sådana överträdelser och lät olyckan drabba oss och vår stad? Nu drar ni ner ytterligare olyckor över Israels folk genom att missbruka sabbaten på det här sättet.
19 Från den stunden befallde jag att stadsportarna skulle stängas vid mörkrets inbrott när sabbaten började, och att de inte fick öppnas förrän den var över. Jag lät några av mina män vakta portarna så att inte några varor kunde föras in i staden under sabbaten.
20 Två eller tre gånger hände det att köpmän och försäljare slog läger utanför Jerusalem,
21 men jag lät dem förstå att om det hände igen skulle det stå dem dyrt. De respekterade detta och kom aldrig mer på en sabbat.
22 Sedan befallde jag leviterna att rena sig och hålla vakt vid portarna för att bevara sabbaten helig. Kom ihåg detta, Herre! Förbarma dig över mig efter din stora nåd!
Nehemja förbjuder blandäktenskap
23 Vid den tiden upptäckte jag också att några män i Juda hade gift sig med kvinnor från Asdod, Ammon och Moab.
24 Många av deras barn kunde inte tala vårt språk ordentligt utan blandade upp det med andra språk.
25 Jag förebrådde dessa föräldrar och uttalade förbannelser över dem. Ja, en del av dem straffade jag handgripligen, tills de lovade inför Gud att inte låta sina barn gifta sig utanför Israel.
26 Var det inte just det här som var kung Salomos problem? frågade jag. Det fanns ingen kung som kunde jämföras med honom, och Gud älskade honom och gjorde honom till kung över hela Israel, men ändå fick utländska kvinnor honom att synda.
27 Tror ni att vi kan tolerera, att ni fortsätter med sådana synder?
28 En son till Jojada, översteprästen Eljasibs son, var svärson till horoniten Sanballat. Honom drev jag bort från templet och ur min åsyn.
29 Kom ihåg dem, Gud, för de har missbrukat prästens tjänst och prästers och leviters löften till dig.
30 Jag renade präster och leviter, avskilde dem från allt främmande och förvissade mig om att var och en visste vad han skulle göra.
31 Jag såg till att de bar fram veden till altaret på bestämda tider och att de vakade över att alla offer bars fram.Tänk på detta, min Gud, och kom i din godhet ihåg mig!

Avskiljande av främmande folk
13 (A) Den dagen läste man ur Moses bok för folket. Där fann man skrivet[a] att ingen ammonit eller moabit någonsin skulle få komma in i Guds församling, 2 (B) för de hade inte mött Israels barn med mat och dryck utan hade lejt Bileam[b] mot dem för att förbanna dem. Men vår Gud vände förbannelsen till välsignelse. 3 När de hade hört lagen, avskilde de alla främlingar från Israel.

4 (C) En tid dessförinnan hade prästen Eljashib, en släkting till Tobia, blivit utsedd att förestå kamrarna i vår Guds hus. 5 (D) Han hade inrett ett stort rum åt Tobia, där man tidigare brukade lägga matoffret, rökelsen och kärlen och det tionde av säd, vin och olja som var bestämt åt leviterna, sångarna och dörrvakterna, likaså offergåvan till prästerna.
6 Medan allt detta hände befann jag mig inte i Jerusalem, för i Babels kung Artashastas trettioandra regeringsår[c] hade jag återvänt till kungen. Men efter en tid bad jag kungen om tillstånd 7 och reste tillbaka till Jerusalem. Där fick jag veta allt det onda som Eljashib hade gjort för Tobias skull, då han hade inrett ett rum åt honom i förgårdarna till Guds hus. 8 Jag tog mycket illa vid mig och lät kasta ut allt Tobias bohag ur rummet. 9 Därefter befallde jag att rummen skulle renas, och ställde sedan åter in kärlen där i Guds hus, och matoffret och rökelsen.
10 (E) Jag fick också veta att man inte hade gett leviterna deras andel. Leviterna och sångarna hade därför återvänt var och en till sina åkrar i stället för att sköta sin tjänst. 11 Jag förebrådde föreståndarna och sade: ”Varför har Guds hus blivit försummat?” Jag hämtade tillbaka dem och lät dem inställa sig på sina platser. 12 (F) Hela Juda förde fram sitt tionde av säd, vin och olja till förrådshusen. 13 Jag satte prästen Shelemja och Sadok, den skriftlärde, och Pedaja, en av leviterna, till förvaltare över förrådshusen och gav dem som hjälp Hanan, son till Sackur, son till Mattanja. För dessa betraktades som pålitliga, och de skulle nu ha hand om utdelningen åt sina bröder.
14 (G) Tänk därför på mig, min Gud, och utplåna inte vad jag av kärlek har gjort för min Guds hus och för tjänstgöringen där.
15 (H) Vid samma tid såg jag i Juda hur man trampade vinpressarna på sabbaten och tog hem säd som man lastade på åsnor, likaså vin, druvor och fikon och allt möjligt som kunde bäras och förde det till Jerusalem på sabbatsdagen. Jag varnade dem när de sålde sina varor.
16 Tyrierna som vistades där förde in fisk och alla slags varor och sålde dem på sabbaten till judarna och i Jerusalem. 17 Då förebrådde jag stormännen i Juda och sade till dem: ”Hur kan ni handla så illa och vanhelga sabbatsdagen? 18 Var det inte för att era fäder gjorde sådant som vår Gud lät alla dessa olyckor komma över oss och denna stad? Och nu drar ni ännu mer vrede över Israel genom att vanhelga sabbaten!” 19 Så snart det började bli mörkt i Jerusalems portar före sabbaten, befallde jag att man skulle stänga portarna och att de inte skulle öppnas förrän efter sabbaten. Jag ställde några av mina tjänare på vakt vid portarna för att inga varor skulle kunna föras in på sabbatsdagen. 20 Då stannade köpmän och försäljare av alla slags varor utanför Jerusalem över natten, och det både en och två gånger. 21 Men jag varnade dem och sade till dem: ”Varför övernattar ni framför muren? Om ni gör så en gång till, ska jag låta min hand straffa er.” Från den dagen kom de inte mer på sabbaten. 22 Jag befallde leviterna att de skulle rena sig och komma för att hålla vakt vid portarna, så att sabbaten kunde hållas helig.
Tänk också därför på mig, min Gud, och förbarma dig över mig efter din stora godhet.
23 På den tiden såg jag också judiska män som hade tagit till sig ashdoditiska, ammonitiska och moabitiska kvinnor. 24 Hälften av deras barn talade ashdoditiska eller de andra folkens språk, och de kunde inte tala judarnas språk.[d] 25 (I) Då förebrådde jag dem detta och förbannade dem, och några slog jag och drog i håret. Jag lät dem lova med ed vid Gud och sade: ”Ni ska inte ge era döttrar åt deras söner, och inte ta deras döttrar till hustrur åt era söner eller åt er själva. 26 (J) Var det inte just så som Israels kung Salomo syndade? Bland de många hednafolken fanns ingen kung som han, och han var älskad av sin Gud, och Gud satte honom till kung över hela Israel. Men också honom förförde de främmande kvinnorna till synd. 27 Och nu hör vi om er att ni har gjort detta stora onda och varit otrogna mot vår Gud genom att gifta er med främmande kvinnor!” 28 (K) En son till Jojada, översteprästen Eljashibs son, var svärson till horoniten Sanballat. Honom drev jag bort från mig.
29 Tänk på dem, min Gud, för de har fläckat ner prästämbetet och prästämbetets och leviternas förbund! 30 Så renade jag folket från allt främmande och fastställde vad prästerna[e] och leviterna skulle iaktta, var och en i sin uppgift, 31 (L) hur vedoffret och förstlingsgåvorna skulle avlämnas på bestämda tider och angående förstlingsgåvorna.
Tänk på detta, min Gud, mig till godo!

13 On that day the Book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the people and there it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be admitted into the assembly of God,(A) 2 because they had not met the Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam(B) to call a curse down on them.(C) (Our God, however, turned the curse into a blessing.)(D) 3 When the people heard this law, they excluded from Israel all who were of foreign descent.(E)
4 Before this, Eliashib the priest had been put in charge of the storerooms(F) of the house of our God. He was closely associated with Tobiah,(G) 5 and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store the grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes(H) of grain, new wine and olive oil prescribed for the Levites, musicians and gatekeepers, as well as the contributions for the priests.
6 But while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes(I) king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I asked his permission 7 and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib(J) had done in providing Tobiah(K) a room in the courts of the house of God. 8 I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.(L) 9 I gave orders to purify the rooms,(M) and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense.(N)
10 I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them,(O) and that all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields.(P) 11 So I rebuked the officials and asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?”(Q) Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts.
12 All Judah brought the tithes(R) of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms.(S) 13 I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because they were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.(T)
14 Remember(U) me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services.
15 In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath.(V) Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day. 16 People from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath(W) to the people of Judah. 17 I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this wicked thing you are doing—desecrating the Sabbath day? 18 Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity on us and on this city?(X) Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.”(Y)
19 When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath,(Z) I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Once or twice the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem. 21 But I warned them and said, “Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you.” From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.
Remember(AA) me for this also, my God, and show mercy to me according to your great love.
23 Moreover, in those days I saw men of Judah who had married(AB) women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab.(AC) 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language(AD) of Judah. 25 I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath(AE) in God’s name and said: “You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves.(AF) 26 Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him.(AG) He was loved by his God,(AH) and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women.(AI) 27 Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying(AJ) foreign women?”
28 One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib(AK) the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat(AL) the Horonite. And I drove him away from me.
29 Remember(AM) them, my God, because they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.(AN)
30 So I purified the priests and the Levites of everything foreign,(AO) and assigned them duties, each to his own task. 31 I also made provision for contributions of wood(AP) at designated times, and for the firstfruits.(AQ)

And after some time I asked leave of the king 7 and came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, (K)preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. 8 And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber. 9 Then I gave orders, and they (L)cleansed the chambers, and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense.
10 I also found out that (M)the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each (N)to his field. 11 (O)So I confronted the officials and said, (P)“Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations. 12 Then all Judah brought (Q)the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses. 13 And (R)I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, (S)for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers. 14 (T)Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service.

And (W)I warned them on the day when they sold food. 16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 (X)Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, (Y)profaning the Sabbath day? 18 (Z)Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster[a] on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”
19 As soon as it (AA)began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 (AB)But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites (AC)that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. (AD)Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.
23 In those days also I saw the Jews (AE)who had married women (AF)of Ashdod, (AG)Ammon, and (AH)Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people. 25 (AI)And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. (AJ)And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. 26 (AK)Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? (AL)Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was (AM)beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin. 27 Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and (AN)act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”
28 And one of the sons of (AO)Jehoiada, the son of (AP)Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of (AQ)Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me. 29 (AR)Remember them, O my God, because they have desecrated the priesthood (AS)and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.
30 (AT)Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work; 31 and I provided (AU)for the wood offering (AV)at appointed times, and for the firstfruits.
