6 参巴拉、多比雅、阿拉伯人基善和我们其余的仇敌听见我已经修完了城墙，其中没有破裂之处（那时我还没有安门扇）， 2 参巴拉和基善就打发人来见我，说：“请你来，我们在阿挪平原的一个庄村相会。”他们却想害我。 3 于是我差遣人去见他们，说：“我现在办理大工，不能下去。焉能停工下去见你们呢？” 4 他们这样四次打发人来见我，我都如此回答他们。 5 参巴拉第五次打发仆人来见我，手里拿着未封的信， 6 信上写着说：“外邦人中有风声，迦施慕[a]也说，你和犹大人谋反，修造城墙，你要做他们的王。 7 你又派先知在耶路撒冷指着你宣讲说：‘在犹大有王！’现在这话必传于王知。所以请你来，与我们彼此商议。” 8 我就差遣人去见他，说：“你所说的这事一概没有，是你心里捏造的。” 9 他们都要使我们惧怕，意思说：“他们的手必软弱，以致工作不能成就。”神啊，求你坚固我的手！
又令伪先知惊吓
10 我到了米希大别的孙子、第来雅的儿子示玛雅家里，那时他闭门不出。他说：“我们不如在神的殿里会面，将殿门关锁，因为他们要来杀你，就是夜里来杀你。” 11 我说：“像我这样的人岂要逃跑呢？像我这样的人岂能进入殿里保全生命呢？我不进去！” 12 我看明神没有差遣他，是他自己说这话攻击我，是多比雅和参巴拉贿买了他。 13 贿买他的缘故，是要叫我惧怕，依从他犯罪，他们好传扬恶言毁谤我。 14 我的神啊，多比雅、参巴拉、女先知挪亚底和其余的先知要叫我惧怕，求你记念他们所行的这些事。

15 以禄月二十五日，城墙修完了，共修了五十二天。 16 我们一切仇敌、四围的外邦人听见了便惧怕，愁眉不展，因为见这工作完成是出乎我们的神。 17 在那些日子，犹大的贵胄屡次寄信于多比雅，多比雅也来信于他们。 18 在犹大有许多人与多比雅结盟，因他是亚拉的儿子，示迦尼的女婿，并且他的儿子约哈难娶了比利迦儿子米书兰的女儿为妻。 19 他们常在我面前说多比雅的善行，也将我的话传于他。多比雅又常寄信来，要叫我惧怕。

6 وَعَلِمَ سَنْبَلَّطُ وَطُوبِيَّا وَجَشَمُ العَرَبِيُّ وَبَقِيَّةُ أعْدَائِنَا بِأنَّنَا قَدْ أنهَينَا بِنَاءَ السُّورِ، وَأنَّهُ لَمْ تَعُدْ فِيهِ ثَغْرَةٌ – مَعَ أنَّنِي لَمْ أكُنْ قَدْ ثَبَّتُّ مَصَارِيعَ البَوَّابَاتِ عَلَيْهَا. 2 فَأرْسَلَ سَنْبَلَّطُ وَجَشَمُ لِي هَذِهِ الرِّسَالَةَ: «تَعَالَ فَنَلْتَقِ فِي إحْدَى القُرَى فِي سَهلِ أُونُو.» لَكِنَّهُمَا كَانَا يُخَطِّطَانِ لِإيذَائِي. 3 فَأرْسَلْتُ إلَيْهِمَا رُسُلًا قَالُوا لَهُمَا: «أنَا أقُومُ بِعَمَلٍ مُهِمٍ، وَلِهَذَا لَا أسْتَطِيعُ النُّزُولَ إلَيكُمَا. فَمَا الَّذِي يَجْعَلُنِي أُوقِفُ العَمَلَ مِنْ أجْلِ أنْ آتِيَ إلَيكُمَا؟» 4 فَأرْسَلَا الرِّسَالَةَ نَفْسَهَا أرْبَعَ مَرَّاتٍ، وَأعْطَيْتُهُمُ الجَوَابَ نَفْسَهُ. 5 ثُمَّ عَادَ سَنْبَلَّطُ فَأرْسَلَ خَادِمَهُ بِالطَّرِيقَةِ نَفْسِهَا وَفِي يَدِهِ رِسَالَةٌ غَيْرُ مَختُومَةٍ، 6 مَكْتُوبٌ فِيهَا:
«يُؤَكِّدُ جَشَمُ مَا يُقَالُ بَيْنَ الشُّعُوبِ مِنْ أخْبَارٍ بِأنَّكَ أنْتَ وَاليَهُودَ تُخَطِّطُونَ لِلتَّمَرُّدِ، وَهَذَا سَبَبُ بِنَائِكُمْ لِلسُّورِ. كَمَا سَمِعْنَا أنَّكَ سَتُعلِنُ نَفْسَكَ مَلِكًا عَلَى اليَهُودِ قَرِيبًا! 7 وَأنَّكَ عَيَّنْتَ أنْبِيَاءَ لِيُذِيعُوا فِي القُدْسِ: ‹يُوجَدُ مَلِكٌ فِي يَهُوذَا› الَّذِي هُوَ أنْتَ. وَسَنَنقُلُ هَذِهِ الأخْبَارَ لِلمَلِكِ، إلَّا إذَا جِئْتَ لِنَجتَمِعَ مَعًا.»
8 فَأرسَلْتُ رِسَالَةً إلَيْهِ قُلْتُ فِيهَا: «لَمْ يَحْدُثْ شَيءٌ مِمَّا قُلْتَهُ، وَأنْتَ تَخْتَرِعُ هَذِهِ الأشْيَاءَ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ.»
9 فَقَدْ كَانُوا جَمِيعًا يُحَاوِلُونَ إخَافَتَنَا بِقَولِهِمْ: «سَنُثْنِيهِمْ عَنِ الِاسْتِمرَارِ فِي العَمَلِ، فَلَا يَتِّمُّ.» لَكِنِّي وَاصَلْتُ العَمَلَ بِتَصْمِيمٍ أقوَى.
10 وَذَاتَ يَوْمٍ ذَهَبْتُ إلَى بَيْتِ شَمْعِيَا بْنِ دَلَايَا بْنِ مَهِيطَبْئِيلَ، وَكَانَ قَلِقًا فَقَالَ لِي:
«لِنَجتَمِعْ فِي بَيْتِ اللهِ،
دَاخِلَ الهَيْكَلِ، وَنُغلِقْ أبْوَابَ الهَيْكَلِ،
لِأنَّ الأعْدَاءَ قَادِمُونَ لِقَتلِكَ.»
11 فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: «أيَهْرُبُ رَجُلٌ مِثْلِي؟ ثُمَّ إنْ دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ عَادِيٌّ مِثْلِي الهَيْكَلَ يَنْبَغِي أنْ يُقْتَلَ. لَنْ أدْخُلَ!»
12 وَأدرَكْتُ وَفَهِمْتُ أنَّ اللهَ لَمْ يُرسِلْهُ قّطُّ، لَكِنَّهُ تَنَبَّأ لِي شَرًّا لِأنَّ طُوبِيَّا وَسَنْبَلَّطَ دَفَعَا لَهُ مَالًا. 13 فَقَدِ استَأْجَرَاهُ لِيُنزِلَ الخَوفَ فِي قَلْبِي، فأخْطِئَ بِدُخُولِ مَكَانٍ مُقَدَّسٍ فِي الهَيْكَلِ. ثُمَّ يُشِيعُونَ عَنِّي ذَلِكَ الخَبَرَ عَارًا لِي. 14 فَعَاقِبْ يَا إلَهِي طُوبِيَّا وَسَنبَلَّطَ عَلَى مَا فَعَلَاهُ، وَعَاقِبْ أيْضًا النَّبِيَّةَ نُوعَدْيَةَ وَبَقِيَّةَ الأنْبِيَاءِ الَّذِينَ يُحَاوِلُونَ تَخْوِيفِي.
15 وَاكتَمَلَ السُّورُ فِي الخَامِسِ وَالعِشْرِينَ مِنْ أيلُولَ فِي اثنَيْنِ وَخَمْسِينَ يَوْمًا. 16 وَلَمَّا سَمِعَ جَمِيعُ أعْدَائِنَا هَذَا الخَبَرَ، وَرَأتِ الشُّعُوبُ مِنْ حَوْلِنَا السُّورَ، لَمْ تَعُدْ لَهُمْ ثِقَةٌ بِأنفُسِهِمْ. فَقَدْ عَرَفُوا أنَّ إلَهَنَا هُوَ الَّذِي عَمِلَ العَمَلَ.
17 وَفِي تِلْكَ الأيَّامِ كَانَ وُجَهَاءُ يَهُوذَا يُرسِلُونَ رَسَائِلَ كَثِيرَةً إلَى طُوبِيَّا، وَكَانَتْ رَسَائِلُ طُوبِيَّا تَصِلُهُمْ. 18 لِأنَّ كَثِيرِينَ فِي يَهُوذَا كَانُوا فِي عَهْدِ مُوالَاةٍ لَهُ، لِأنَّهُ كَانَ صِهْرَ شَكَنْيَا بْنِ آرَحَ، وَتَزَوَّجَ ابْنُهُ يُهُوحَانَانُ بِنْتَ مَشُلَّامَ بْنِ بَرَخْيَا. 19 كَمَا كَانُوا يَذْكُرُونَ أمَامِي أعْمَالَهُ الحَسَنَةَ، وَيَنْقُلُونَ إلَيْهِ كَلَامِي. فَبَعَثَ طُوبِيَّا بِرَسَائِلَ لِيُخِيفَنِي.

Further Opposition to the Rebuilding
6 When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah,(A) Geshem(B) the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates— 2 Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages[a] on the plain of Ono.(C)”
But they were scheming to harm me; 3 so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” 4 Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.
5 Then, the fifth time, Sanballat(D) sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter 6 in which was written:
“It is reported among the nations—and Geshem[b](E) says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king 7 and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”
8 I sent him this reply: “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.”
9 They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.”
But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.”
10 One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple(F), and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you—by night they are coming to kill you.”
11 But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!” 12 I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me(G) because Tobiah and Sanballat(H) had hired him. 13 He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.(I)
14 Remember(J) Tobiah and Sanballat,(K) my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet(L) Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets(M) have been trying to intimidate me. 15 So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
Opposition to the Completed Wall
16 When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.
17 Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them. 18 For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. 19 Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.

6 Now it came to pass when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
2 That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.
3 And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
4 Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
5 Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
6 Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
7 And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
8 Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
9 For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10 Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.
11 And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
12 And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13 Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14 My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
15 So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.
16 And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
17 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.
18 For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
19 Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
