4 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.
2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?
3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.
4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:
5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.
6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
7 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,
8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
13 Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.
18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.
19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.
23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.

4 Sambalat se enojó mucho cuando supo que estábamos reedificando la muralla. Enfurecido, nos insultó y se burló de nosotros. 2 Delante de sus amigos y de los oficiales del ejército samaritano, dijo:
―¿Qué hace ese grupito de judíos pobres y débiles? ¿Piensan que se les permitirá reconstruir, para que vuelvan a ofrecer sus sacrificios? ¿Acaso creen que ese trabajo lo pueden terminar en un día? ¡Miren las piedras calcinadas que están sacando de la basura para volverlas a usar!
3 Tobías el amonita, que estaba junto a él, agregó:
―¡Valiente construcción! ¡Si un zorro camina sobre el muro, lo derrumba!
4 Entonces yo oré:
«Oye, Dios nuestro, cómo se burlan de nosotros. Haz que sus burlas caigan sobre sus propias cabezas, y que sean llevados cautivos a tierra extraña. 5 No pases por alto su pecado, ni olvides su maldad, pues han insultado a los que reconstruyen la muralla».
6 El muro fue completado hasta la mitad de su altura original alrededor de toda la ciudad, porque los obreros trabajaron arduamente. 7 Pero cuando Sambalat, Tobías, los árabes, los amonitas y los asdodeos oyeron que la obra estaba avanzando y que las brechas de la muralla estaban siendo reparadas, se enfurecieron. 8 Se pusieron de acuerdo para atacar a Jerusalén y producir desánimo en la gente. 9 Pero nosotros oramos a nuestro Dios y colocamos guardias que vigilaran de día y de noche. 10 Como si eso fuera poco, los de Judá comenzaron a quejarse, y decían:
«Los cargadores están muy cansados, y todavía quedan muchos escombros para botar. ¡Jamás podremos reconstruir la muralla!».
11 Mientras tanto, nuestros enemigos estaban planeando caer sobre nosotros y matarnos, para poner fin a nuestro trabajo. 12 Pero algunos judíos que vivían en medio de ellos venían, una y otra vez, a avisarnos de sus planes y nos indicaban por dónde pensaban atacarnos.
13 Por lo tanto, puse guardias armados organizados por familias en los lugares donde la muralla estaba más baja. 14 Luego, al considerar la situación, convoqué a todos los jefes y al pueblo y les dije: «No tengan miedo: Recuerden que el Señor es grande y poderoso. ¡Peleen por sus amigos, por sus familias y por sus hogares!».
15 Nuestros enemigos dejaron de estorbarnos cuando supieron que estábamos al tanto de todo y de que Dios había desbaratado sus planes. Entonces nosotros regresamos a nuestros trabajos en la muralla. 16 Pero desde entonces sólo la mitad trabajaba, mientras la otra mitad estaba de guardia, armados de lanzas, escudos, arcos y corazas. Y los jefes de Judá les brindaban su apoyo. 17 Los albañiles y los demás obreros trabajaban con las armas al alcance de la mano. 18 Cada uno de los constructores llevaba una espada al cinto. El que tocaba la trompeta permanecía junto a mí, a fin de hacer llegar la voz de alarma. 19 Yo les había dicho a los hombres importantes del pueblo, a los jefes y al resto del pueblo: «La obra es mucha y extensa, de modo que estamos muy separados unos de otros. 20 Por eso, cuando oigan el sonido de alarma, corran a reunirse con nosotros al lugar desde donde suena la trompeta. ¡Dios peleará por nosotros!».
21 Trabajábamos desde el alba hasta la salida de las estrellas, y la mitad de los hombres estaba siempre de guardia. 22 Pedí a todos los que vivían fuera de los muros que se quedaran a dormir en Jerusalén, para que sus siervos también pudieran estar de guardia y trabajaran en el día. 23 Durante este tiempo, ninguno de nosotros, ni yo, ni mis hermanos, ni los siervos, ni los guardias que estaban conmigo, nos quitábamos la ropa para dormir. Y siempre teníamos las armas a la mano.

Opposition to the Rebuilding
4 [a]When Sanballat(A) heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, 2 and in the presence of his associates(B) and the army of Samaria, he said, “What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble(C)—burned as they are?”
3 Tobiah(D) the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, “What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!”(E)
4 Hear us, our God, for we are despised.(F) Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. 5 Do not cover up their guilt(G) or blot out their sins from your sight,(H) for they have thrown insults in the face of[b] the builders.
6 So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.
7 But when Sanballat, Tobiah,(I) the Arabs, the Ammonites and the people of Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem’s walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry. 8 They all plotted together(J) to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it. 9 But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.
10 Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, “The strength of the laborers(K) is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.”
11 Also our enemies said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.”
12 Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
13 Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows. 14 After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid(L) of them. Remember(M) the Lord, who is great and awesome,(N) and fight(O) for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
15 When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it,(P) we all returned to the wall, each to our own work.
16 From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor. The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah 17 who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon(Q) in the other, 18 and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet(R) stayed with me.
19 Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet,(S) join us there. Our God will fight(T) for us!”
21 So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out. 22 At that time I also said to the people, “Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and as workers by day.” 23 Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.[c]
