Rebuilding the Wall
3 Then (A)Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests (B)and built the Sheep Gate; they consecrated it and hung its doors. They built (C)as far as the Tower of [a]the Hundred, and consecrated it, then as far as the Tower of (D)Hananel. 2 [b]Next to Eliashib (E)the men of Jericho built. And next to them Zaccur the son of Imri built.
3 Also the sons of Hassenaah built (F)the Fish Gate; they laid its beams and (G)hung its doors with its bolts and bars. 4 And next to them (H)Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of [c]Koz, made repairs. Next to them (I)Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabel, made repairs. Next to them Zadok the son of Baana made repairs. 5 Next to them the Tekoites made repairs; but their nobles did not put their [d]shoulders to (J)the work of their Lord.
6 Moreover Jehoiada the son of Paseah and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah repaired (K)the Old Gate; they laid its beams and hung its doors, with its bolts and bars. 7 And next to them Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, the (L)men of Gibeon and Mizpah, repaired the (M)residence[e] of the governor of the region [f]beyond the River. 8 Next to him Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs. Also next to him Hananiah, [g]one of the perfumers, made repairs; and they [h]fortified Jerusalem as far as the (N)Broad Wall. 9 And next to them Rephaiah the son of Hur, leader of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs. 10 Next to them Jedaiah the son of Harumaph made repairs in front of his house. And next to him Hattush the son of Hashabniah made repairs.
11 Malchijah the son of Harim and Hashub the son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section, (O)as well as the Tower of the Ovens. 12 And next to him was Shallum the son of Hallohesh, leader of half the district of Jerusalem; he and his daughters made repairs.
13 Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired (P)the Valley Gate. They built it, hung its doors with its bolts and bars, and repaired a thousand cubits of the wall as far as (Q)the Refuse Gate.
14 Malchijah the son of Rechab, leader of the district of (R)Beth Haccerem, repaired the Refuse Gate; he built it and hung its doors with its bolts and bars.
15 Shallun the son of Col-Hozeh, leader of the district of Mizpah, repaired (S)the Fountain Gate; he built it, covered it, hung its doors with its bolts and bars, and repaired the wall of the Pool of (T)Shelah[i] by the (U)King’s Garden, as far as the stairs that go down from the City of David. 16 After him Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, leader of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs as far as the place in front of the [j]tombs of David, to the (V)man-made pool, and as far as the House of the Mighty.
17 After him the Levites, under Rehum the son of Bani, made repairs. Next to him Hashabiah, leader of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district. 18 After him their brethren, under [k]Bavai the son of Henadad, leader of the other half of the district of Keilah, made repairs. 19 And next to him Ezer the son of Jeshua, the leader of Mizpah, repaired another section in front of the Ascent to the Armory at the (W)buttress.[l] 20 After him Baruch the son of [m]Zabbai carefully repaired the other section, from the [n]buttress to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest. 21 After him Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of [o]Koz, repaired another section, from the door of the house of Eliashib to the end of the house of Eliashib.
22 And after him the priests, the men of the plain, made repairs. 23 After him Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs opposite their house. After them Azariah the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs by his house. 24 After him (X)Binnui the son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah to (Y)the [p]buttress, even as far as the corner. 25 Palal the son of Uzai made repairs opposite the [q]buttress, and on the tower which projects from the king’s upper house that was by the (Z)court of the prison. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh made repairs.
26 Moreover (AA)the Nethinim who dwelt in (AB)Ophel made repairs as far as the place in front of (AC)the Water Gate toward the east, and on the projecting tower. 27 After them the Tekoites repaired another section, next to the great projecting tower, and as far as the wall of Ophel.
28 Beyond the (AD)Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house. 29 After them Zadok the son of Immer made repairs in front of his own house. After him Shemaiah the son of Shechaniah, the keeper of the East Gate, made repairs. 30 After him Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. After him Meshullam the son of Berechiah made repairs in front of his [r]dwelling. 31 After him Malchijah, [s]one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the Nethinim and of the merchants, in front of the [t]Miphkad Gate, and as far as the upper room at the corner. 32 And between the upper room at the corner, as far as the (AE)Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.

3 Eliashib, le grand-prêtre, se mit au travail avec ses collègues, les prêtres, et ils se chargèrent de la reconstruction de la porte des Brebis. Ils la consacrèrent et en posèrent les battants, puis ils continuèrent à réparer la muraille, qu’ils consacrèrent, jusqu’à la tour de Méa, puis jusqu’à la tour de Hananéel.
2 A côté d’eux travaillaient les habitants de Jéricho. A leur suite, c’était Zakkour, fils d’Imri, qui bâtissait. 3 Les descendants de Senaa reconstruisirent la porte des Poissons[a]. Ils en firent la charpente et en posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres. 4 A côté d’eux, Merémoth, fils d’Urie, petit-fils d’Haqqots, travaillait ; à sa suite, c’était Meshoullam, fils de Bérékia, fils de Meshézabéel ; et plus loin, Tsadoq, fils de Baana. 5 Venaient ensuite les habitants de Teqoa, mais leurs notables refusèrent de travailler sous les ordres des maîtres d’œuvre. 6 Yoyada, fils de Paséah, et Meshoullam, fils de Besodia, réparèrent la Vieille Porte. Ils en firent la charpente et posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres.
7 A côté d’eux travaillaient Melatia, le Gabaonite, Yadôn, le Méronothite, et les gens de Gabaon et de Mitspa qui relevaient de la juridiction du gouverneur de la province à l’ouest de l’Euphrate. 8 A côté d’eux travaillait l’orfèvre Ouzziel, fils de Harhaya, et à côté de lui, Hanania le parfumeur. Ils restaurèrent Jérusalem jusqu’à l’endroit où la muraille s’élargit. 9 A côté d’eux travaillait Rephaya, fils de Hour, chef de la moitié du district de Jérusalem. 10 A côté d’eux, Yedaya, fils de Haroumaph, travaillait à la section située en face de sa maison. A sa suite venait Hattoush, fils de Hashabnia. 11 Un second secteur de la muraille ainsi que la tour des Fours furent réparés par Malkiya, fils de Harim, et par Hashoub, fils de Pahath-Moab.
12 A côté d’eux travaillait Shalloum, fils de Hallohesh, chef de l’autre moitié du district de Jérusalem, assisté de ses filles. 13 Hanoun et les habitants de Zanoah[b] réparèrent la porte de la Vallée. Ils la reconstruisirent et en posèrent les battants, les verrous et les barres. De plus, ils restaurèrent la muraille sur cinq cents mètres jusqu’à la porte du Fumier. 14 C’est Malkiya, fils de Rékab, chef du district de Beth-Hakkérem, qui répara la porte du Fumier. Il la rebâtit et en posa les battants, les verrous et les barres. 15 Shalloun, fils de Kol-Hozé, chef du district de Mitspa, répara la porte de la Source[c]. Après l’avoir reconstruite, il la couvrit d’un toit et fixa les battants, les verrous et les barres. De plus, il releva la muraille de l’Etang de l’aqueduc, près du jardin du roi, jusqu’aux marches qui descendent de la Cité de David.
16 Au-delà, Néhémie, fils d’Azbouq, chef de la moitié du district de Beth-Tsour[d], travaillait dans le secteur qui s’étendait jusqu’en face du cimetière de David et allait jusqu’au réservoir artificiel et jusqu’à la caserne[e]. 17 Au-delà travaillaient des lévites : Rehoum, fils de Bani, puis, à côté de lui, Hashabia, chef de la moitié du district de Qeïla. 18 Au-delà travaillait leur collègue Bavvaï, fils de Hénadad, chef de l’autre moitié du district de Qeïla, 19 et, à sa suite, Ezer, fils de Josué, chef de Mitspa, réparait un second secteur, situé en face de la montée de l’arsenal, à l’endroit où la muraille fait saillie.
20 Au-delà, Baruch, fils de Zabbaï, réparait avec ardeur une autre section depuis l’angle jusqu’à l’entrée de la maison d’Eliashib, le grand-prêtre. 21 Au-delà, Merémoth, fils d’Urie et petit-fils d’Haqqots, réparait un autre secteur, depuis l’entrée de la maison d’Eliashib jusqu’à son extrémité. 22 Au-delà travaillaient les prêtres qui habitaient les plaines environnantes. 23 Au-delà, Benjamin et Hashoub réparaient la muraille en face de leurs maisons. A côté d’eux, Azaria, fils de Maaséya et petit-fils d’Anania, travaillait à côté de sa maison. 24 Au-delà, Binnouï, fils de Hénadad, renforçait un autre secteur allant de la maison d’Azaria jusqu’à l’angle en saillie de la muraille.
25 Puis c’était Palal, fils d’Ouzaï, qui travaillait devant la saillie et la tour supérieure qui domine le palais royal et touche à la cour de la prison, et au-delà, Pedaya, fils de Pareosh. 26 Les desservants du Temple s’étaient établis sur la colline de l’Ophel[f] jusqu’en face de la porte des Eaux à l’est, et de la tour en saillie. 27 Les gens de Teqoa travaillaient à la section suivante, depuis la grande tour en saillie jusqu’à la muraille de la colline de l’Ophel. 28 A partir de la porte des Chevaux, les prêtres travaillaient chacun en face de sa maison. 29 Au-delà, Tsadoq, fils d’Immer, réparait devant sa maison et ensuite Shemaya, fils de Shekania, gardien de la porte de l’Orient[g], 30 Hanania, fils de Shélémia, et Hanoun, le sixième fils de Tsalaph, réparèrent le secteur suivant, et au-delà, Meshoullam, fils de Bérékia, travaillait en face de sa demeure.
31 Puis Malkiya, de la corporation des orfèvres, travaillait jusqu’aux maisons des desservants du Temple et des marchands, vis-à-vis de la porte de la Surveillance et jusqu’au poste de guet situé en haut de l’angle de la muraille. 32 Les orfèvres et les marchands réparèrent la muraille entre ce poste de l’angle et la porte des Brebis.
Le mépris de Sanballat et Tobiya
33 Lorsque Sanballat apprit que nous rebâtissions la muraille, il fut très mécontent et se mit violemment en colère. Il se moqua des Juifs 34 en disant devant ses compatriotes et devant l’armée de Samarie : Qu’est-ce que ces minables Juifs veulent donc faire ? S’imagineraient-ils qu’on va les laisser agir et qu’en offrant des sacrifices à leur Dieu ils viendront maintenant à bout d’une telle entreprise ? Redonneront-ils vie à des pierres ensevelies sous des monceaux de poussière et calcinées ?
35 Tobiya, l’Ammonite, qui se tenait à ses côtés ajouta : Ils n’ont qu’à bâtir ! Si un renard s’élance contre leur muraille de pierre, il la brisera.
36 Ecoute, ô notre Dieu, comme on nous méprise ! Fais retomber sur eux l’humiliation qu’ils nous infligent et livre-les au pillage sur une terre d’exil. 37 Ne pardonne pas leur faute et n’efface pas leur péché, car ils ont offensé ceux qui rebâtissent les remparts.
38 Cependant, nous avons continué à bâtir la muraille et, sur tout le pourtour, elle fut réparée jusqu’à mi-hauteur, car chacun avait pris ce travail à cœur.

After them Azariah the son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah repaired beside his own house. 24 After him Binnui the son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah to the buttress and to (AK)the corner. 25 Palal the son of Uzai repaired opposite the buttress and the tower projecting from the upper house of the king at (AL)the court of the guard. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh 26 (AM)and the temple servants living on (AN)Ophel repaired to a point opposite (AO)the Water Gate on the east and the projecting tower. 27 After him (AP)the Tekoites repaired another section opposite the great projecting tower as far as the wall of Ophel.
28 Above (AQ)the Horse Gate the priests repaired, each one opposite his own house. 29 After them Zadok the son of Immer repaired opposite his own house. After him Shemaiah the son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the East Gate, repaired. 30 After him Hananiah the son of Shelemiah and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph repaired another section. After him (AR)Meshullam the son of Berechiah repaired opposite (AS)his chamber. 31 After him Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths, repaired as far as the house of the temple servants and of the merchants, opposite the Muster Gate,[h] and to the upper chamber of the corner. 32 And between the upper chamber of the corner and (AT)the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths and the merchants repaired.
