Sabbath Restored

15 In those days I saw in Judah people who were treading wine presses (A)on the Sabbath, and bringing in sacks of grain and loading them on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs, and every kind of load, (B)and they were bringing them into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So (C)I admonished them on the day they sold food. 16 Also people of Tyre were living [a]there who imported fish and all kinds of merchandise, and sold them to the sons of Judah on the Sabbath, even in Jerusalem. 17 Then (D)I [b]reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, [c]by profaning the Sabbath day? 18 (E)Did your fathers not do the same, so that our God brought on us and on this city all this trouble? Yet you are adding to the wrath against Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

19 And (F)it came about that just as it became dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered that the doors be shut, [d]and that they were not to open them until after the Sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates so that no load would enter on the Sabbath day. 20 Once or twice the traders and merchants of every kind of merchandise spent the night outside Jerusalem. 21 Then (G)I warned them and said to them, “Why do you spend the night in front of the wall? If you do so again, I will [e]use force against you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 And I ordered the Levites that (H)they were to purify themselves and come as gatekeepers to sanctify the Sabbath day. For this also (I)remember me, my God, and have compassion on me according to the greatness of Your mercy.

Mixed Marriages Forbidden

23 In those days I also saw that the Jews had [f](J)married women from (K)Ashdod, (L)Ammon, and Moab. 24 As for their children, half spoke in the language of Ashdod, and none of them knew how to speak the language of Judah, but [g]only the language of his own people. 25 So (M)I quarreled with them and cursed them, and (N)struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and (O)made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take any of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. 26 (P)Did Solomon the king of Israel not sin regarding these things? (Q)Yet among the many nations there was no king like him, and (R)he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel; yet the foreign women caused even him to sin. 27 Has it not then been reported about you that you have committed all this great evil (S)by acting unfaithfully against our God, by [h]marrying foreign women?” 28 Even one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, became a son-in-law of (T)Sanballat the Horonite, so I chased him away from me. 29 (U)Remember them, my God, [i]because they have defiled the priesthood and the (V)covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.

30 (W)So I purified them from everything foreign, and assigned duties to the priests and the Levites, each in his work, 31 and I arranged (X)for the delivery of wood at appointed times and for the first fruits. (Y)Remember me, my God, for good.

The Banquets of the King

Now it happened in the days of (Z)Ahasuerus, the Ahasuerus who reigned (AA)from India to [j]Cush over (AB)127 provinces, in those days as King Ahasuerus (AC)sat on his royal throne which was at the citadel in (AD)Susa, in the third year of his reign (AE)he held a banquet for all his officials and attendants, the army officers of Persia and Media, the nobles and the officials of his provinces, in his presence. [k]At that time he displayed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor of his great majesty for many days, 180 days.

When these days were finished, the king held a banquet lasting seven days for all the people who were present at the citadel in Susa, from the greatest to the least, in the courtyard of (AF)the garden of the king’s palace. There were curtains of fine white and violet linen held by cords of fine purple linen on silver rings and marble columns, and (AG)couches of gold and silver on a mosaic floor of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl, and mineral stones. Drinks were served in golden vessels of various kinds, and the royal wine was plentiful (AH)in proportion to the king’s [l]bounty. But the drinking was done according to the royal law; there was no compulsion, for so the king had given orders to each official of his household, that he was to do as each person pleased. Queen Vashti also held a banquet for the women in the [m]palace which belonged to King Ahasuerus.

Queen Vashti’s Refusal

10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was (AI)cheerful with wine, he ordered Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, 11 to bring Queen Vashti before the king with her royal (AJ)turban in order to display her beauty to the people and the officials, for she was beautiful. 12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s order [n]delivered by the eunuchs. So the king became very angry, and his wrath burned within him.

13 Then the king said to (AK)the wise men (AL)who understood the times—for it was the custom of the king to speak this way before all who knew Persian law and justice 14 and were close to him, namely, Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven officials of Persia and Media (AM)who [o]had access to the king’s presence and sat in the first place in the kingdom— 15 “According to law, what is to be done with Queen Vashti, since she did not [p]obey the command of King Ahasuerus [q]delivered by the eunuchs?” 16 And in the presence of the king and the other officials, Memucan said, “Queen Vashti has wronged not only the king but also all the officials and all the peoples who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. 17 For the queen’s conduct will [r]become known to all the women so as to make their own husbands despicable in their sight, when they say, ‘King Ahasuerus [s]commanded that Queen Vashti be brought in to his presence, but she did not come.’ 18 And this day the wives of the officials of Persia and Media who have heard about the queen’s conduct will talk about it to all the king’s officials, and there will be plenty of contempt and anger. 19 If it pleases the king, let a royal [t]edict be issued by him and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media so (AN)that it cannot [u]be repealed, that Vashti may not come into the presence of King Ahasuerus, and let the king give her royal position to [v]another who is more worthy than she. 20 When the king’s edict which he will make is heard throughout his kingdom, [w]great as it is, then (AO)all women will give honor to their husbands, great and small.”

21 Now this word pleased the king and the officials, and the king did [x]as Memucan proposed. 22 So he sent letters to all the king’s provinces, (AP)to each province according to its script and to every people according to their language, that every man was to (AQ)be the ruler in his own house and the one who speaks in the language of his own people.

Vashti’s Successor Sought

After these things, (AR)when the anger of King Ahasuerus had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done, and (AS)what had been decided regarding her. Then the king’s attendants, who served him, said, “(AT)Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king. And may the king appoint overseers in (AU)all the provinces of his kingdom, and have them [y]bring every beautiful young virgin to the citadel of Susa, to the harem, into the custody of (AV)Hegai, the king’s eunuch, who is in charge of the women; and (AW)let their cosmetics be given to them. Then let the young woman who pleases the king be queen in place of Vashti.” And the [z]suggestion pleased the king, and he did accordingly.

There was a Jew at the citadel in Susa whose name was (AX)Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjaminite, (AY)who had been taken from Jerusalem with the exiles who had been deported with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had deported. He was the guardian to Hadassah, that is (AZ)Esther, his uncle’s daughter, for she had no father or mother. Now the young woman was beautiful of form and [aa]face, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.

Esther Finds Favor

So it came about, when the command and decree of the king were heard and (BA)many young ladies were gathered to the citadel of Susa into the [ab]custody of (BB)Hegai, that Esther was taken to the king’s [ac]palace into the custody of Hegai, who was in charge of the women. Now the young lady pleased him and found favor with him. So he quickly provided her with her (BC)cosmetics and [ad]food, gave her seven choice female attendants from the king’s palace, and transferred her and her attendants to the best place in the harem. 10 (BD)Esther did not reveal her people or her kindred, because Mordecai had instructed her that she was not to reveal them. 11 And every day Mordecai walked back and forth in front of the courtyard of the harem to learn how Esther was and what was happening to her.

12 Now when the turn came for each young woman to go in to King Ahasuerus, after the end of her twelve months under the regulations for the women—for the days of their beauty treatment were completed as follows: six months with oil of myrrh and six months with balsam oil and the cosmetics for women— 13 the young woman would go in to the king in this way: anything that she [ae]desired was given her to [af]take with her from the harem to the king’s palace. 14 In the evening she would enter and in the morning she would return to the second harem, to the [ag]custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s eunuch who was in charge of the concubines. She would not go in to the king again, unless the king delighted in her and she was summoned by name.

15 Now when the turn of Esther, (BE)the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai who had taken her as his daughter, came to go in to the king, she did not request anything except what (BF)Hegai, the king’s eunuch who was in charge of the women, [ah]advised. And Esther was finding favor in the eyes of all who saw her. 16 So Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus in his royal palace in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

Esther Becomes Queen

17 The king loved Esther more than all the women, and she found favor and kindness with him more than all the virgins, so that (BG)he set the royal turban on her head and made her queen in place of Vashti. 18 Then (BH)the king held a great banquet, Esther’s banquet, for all his officials and his servants; he also made a holiday for the provinces and gave gifts (BI)in proportion to the king’s bounty.

19 (BJ)Now when the virgins were gathered together for the second time, then Mordecai (BK)was sitting at the king’s gate. 20 (BL)Esther still had not revealed her relatives or her people, just as Mordecai had instructed her; for Esther did [ai]what Mordecai told her just as she had (BM)when under his care.

Mordecai Saves the King

21 In those days, while Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate, (BN)Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king’s officials from those who guarded the door, became angry and sought to [aj]attack King Ahasuerus. 22 But the [ak]plot became known to Mordecai and (BO)he informed Queen Esther, and Esther told the king in Mordecai’s name. 23 Then when the plot was investigated and found to be so, they were both hanged on a wooden gallows; and it was written in (BP)the Book of the Chronicles in the king’s presence.

Haman’s Plot against the Jews

After these events King Ahasuerus (BQ)honored Haman, the son of Hammedatha (BR)the Agagite, and (BS)promoted him and [al]established his authority over all the officials who were with him. All the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate bowed down and paid [am]homage to Haman; for so the king had commanded regarding him. But (BT)Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid [an]homage. Then the king’s servants who were at (BU)the king’s gate said to Mordecai, “(BV)Why are you violating the king’s command?” Now it was when they had spoken daily to him and he would not listen to them, that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai’s reason would [ao]stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew. When Haman saw that (BW)Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid [ap]homage to him, Haman was filled with rage. But he [aq]considered it beneath his dignity to [ar]kill Mordecai alone, for they had told him who the people of Mordecai were; so Haman (BX)sought to annihilate all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, who were found throughout the kingdom of Ahasuerus.

In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, [as]Pur, that is the lot, was (BY)cast before Haman from day to day and from month to month, [at]until the twelfth month, that is (BZ)the month Adar. Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom; (CA)their laws are different from those of all other people and they do not [au]comply with the king’s laws, so it is not in the king’s interest to let them remain. If it is pleasing to the king, let it be [av]decreed that they be eliminated, and I will pay [aw]ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who carry out the king’s business, to put into the king’s treasuries.” 10 Then (CB)the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the son of Hammedatha (CC)the Agagite, (CD)the enemy of the Jews. 11 And the king said to Haman, “The silver is [ax]yours, and the people also, to do with them as you please.”

12 (CE)Then the king’s scribes were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and it was written just as Haman commanded to (CF)the king’s satraps, to the governors who were over each province and to the officials of each people, each province according to its script, each people according to its language, being written (CG)in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king’s signet ring. 13 Letters were sent by (CH)couriers to all the king’s provinces (CI)to annihilate, kill, and destroy all the Jews, both young and old, women and children, (CJ)in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to (CK)seize their possessions as plunder. 14 (CL)A copy of the edict to be [ay]issued as law in every province was published to all the peoples so that they would be ready for this day. 15 The couriers went out, speeded by the king’s [az]order while the decree was [ba]issued at the citadel in Susa; and while the king and Haman sat down to drink, (CM)the city of Susa was agitated.

Esther Learns of Haman’s Plot

When Mordecai learned of (CN)everything that had been done, [bb]he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city and wailed loudly and bitterly. And he came as far as the king’s gate, for no one was to enter the king’s gate clothed in sackcloth. In each and every province where the command and decree of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with (CO)fasting, weeping, and mourning rites; and many had sackcloth and ashes spread out as a bed.

Then Esther’s attendants and her eunuchs came and informed her, and the queen was seized by great fear. And she sent garments to clothe Mordecai so that he would remove his sackcloth from him, but he did not accept them. Then Esther summoned Hathach from the king’s eunuchs, whom [bc]the king had appointed to attend her, and ordered him to go to Mordecai to learn what this mourning was and why it was happening. So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the city square, in front of the king’s gate. Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, and (CP)the exact amount of money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the elimination of the Jews. He also gave him (CQ)a copy of the text of the edict which had been issued in Susa for their annihilation, so that he might show Esther and inform her, and to order her to go in to the king to implore his favor and plead with him for her people.

So Hathach came back and reported Mordecai’s words to Esther. 10 Then Esther spoke to Hathach and ordered him to reply to Mordecai: 11 “All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that for any man or woman who (CR)comes to the king in the inner courtyard, who is not summoned, (CS)he has only one law, that he be put to death, unless the king holds out (CT)to him the golden scepter so that he may live. And I have not been summoned to come to the king for these thirty days.” 12 And they reported Esther’s words to Mordecai.

13 Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, “Do not imagine that you in the king’s palace can escape any more than all the other Jews. 14 For if you keep silent at this time, liberation and (CU)rescue will arise for the Jews from another place, and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”

Esther Plans to Intercede

15 Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, 16 “Go, gather all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; (CV)do not eat or drink for (CW)three days, night or day. I and my attendants also will fast in the same way. And then I will go in to the king, which is not in accordance with the law; and if I perish, I perish.” 17 So Mordecai went away and did just as Esther had commanded him.

Esther Plans a Banquet

Now it came about (CX)on the third day that Esther put on her royal robes and stood (CY)in the inner courtyard of the king’s palace in front of the king’s [bd]rooms, and the king was sitting on his royal throne in the [be]throne room, opposite the entrance to the palace. When the king saw Esther the queen standing in the courtyard, (CZ)she obtained favor in his sight; and (DA)the king extended to Esther the golden scepter which was in his hand. So Esther approached and touched the top of the scepter. Then the king said to her, “What is troubling you, Queen Esther? And what is your request? (DB)Up to half of the kingdom it shall be given to you.” Esther said, “If it pleases the king, may the king and Haman come this day to the banquet that I have prepared for him.”

Then the king said, “(DC)Bring Haman quickly so that we may do [bf]as Esther desires.” So the king and Haman came to the banquet which Esther had prepared. [bg]As they drank their wine at the banquet, (DD)the king said to Esther, “(DE)What is your request, for it shall be granted to you. And what is your wish? Up to half of the kingdom it shall be done.” So Esther replied, “My request and my wish is: (DF)if I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my request and do [bh]what I wish, may the king and Haman come to (DG)the banquet which I will prepare for them, and tomorrow I will do [bi]as the king says.”

Haman’s Pride

Then Haman went out that day joyful and pleased of heart; but when Haman saw Mordecai (DH)at the king’s gate and (DI)that he did not stand up or tremble before him, Haman was filled with anger against Mordecai. 10 Haman controlled himself, however, and went to his house. But he [bj]sent for his friends and his wife (DJ)Zeresh. 11 Then Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and his (DK)many sons, and every occasion on which the king had honored him and how he had [bk](DL)promoted him above the officials and servants of the king. 12 Haman also said, “Even Esther the queen let no one except me come with the king to the banquet which she had prepared; and (DM)tomorrow also I am invited by her with the king. 13 Yet all of this [bl]does not satisfy me every time I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at (DN)the king’s gate.” 14 Then Zeresh his wife and all his friends said to him, “(DO)Have a wooden gallows [bm]fifty cubits high made, and in the morning ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on it; then go joyfully with the king to the banquet.” And the [bn]advice pleased Haman, so he had the wooden gallows made.

The King Plans to Honor Mordecai

During that night [bo]the king (DP)could not sleep, so he gave an order to bring (DQ)the book of records, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. And it was found written what (DR)Mordecai had reported about Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs who were doorkeepers, that they had sought to [bp]attack King Ahasuerus. Then the king said, “What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” And the king’s servants who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.” So the king said, “Who is in the courtyard?” Now Haman had just (DS)entered the outer courtyard of the king’s palace in order to speak to the king about (DT)hanging Mordecai on the wooden gallows which he had prepared for him. So the king’s servants said to him, “Behold, Haman is standing in the courtyard.” And the king said, “Have him come in.” Haman then came in and the king said to him, “What is to be done for the man (DU)whom the king desires to honor?” And Haman said [bq]to himself, “Whom would the king desire to honor more than me?” Therefore Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king desires to honor, have them bring a royal robe which the king has worn, and (DV)the horse on which the king has ridden, and on whose head (DW)a royal turban has been placed; then order them to hand the robe and the horse over to one of the king’s noble officials, and have them dress the man whom the king desires to honor, and lead him on horseback through the city square, (DX)and proclaim before him, ‘So it shall be done for the man whom the king desires to honor.’”

Haman Must Honor Mordecai

10 Then the king said to Haman, “Quickly, take the robe and the horse just as you have said, and do so for Mordecai the Jew, who is sitting at the king’s gate; do not fail to do anything of all that you have said.” 11 So Haman took the robe and the horse, and dressed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “So it shall be done for the man whom the king desires to honor.”

12 Then Mordecai returned to the king’s gate, while Haman hurried home, mourning, (DY)with his head covered. 13 And Haman informed (DZ)Zeresh his wife and all his friends of everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, “If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is [br]of Jewish origin, you will not prevail over him, but will certainly fall before him.”

14 While they were still talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and quickly (EA)brought Haman to the banquet which Esther had prepared.

Esther’s Plea

Now the king and Haman came to drink wine with Esther the queen. And the king said to Esther on the second day also [bs]as they drank their wine at the banquet, “(EB)What is your request, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your wish? (EC)Up to half of the kingdom it shall be done.” Then Queen Esther replied, “(ED)If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me as my request, and my people as my wish; for (EE)we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, (EF)killed, and eliminated. Now if we had only been sold as slaves, men and women, I would have kept silent, because the distress would not be sufficient reason to burden the king.” Then King Ahasuerus [bt]asked Queen Esther, “Who is he, and where is he, [bu]who would presume to do such a thing?” And Esther said, “(EG)A foe and an enemy is this wicked Haman!” Then Haman became terrified before the king and queen.

Haman Is Hanged

The king then got up (EH)in his anger from [bv]drinking wine and went into (EI)the palace garden; but Haman stayed to beg for his life from Queen Esther, for he saw that harm had been determined against him by the king. Now when the king returned from the palace garden into the [bw]place where they had been drinking wine, Haman was falling on (EJ)the couch where Esther was. Then the king said, “Will he even assault the queen with me in the house?” As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face. Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs who stood before the king, said, “Indeed, behold, (EK)the wooden gallows standing at Haman’s house [bx]fifty cubits high, which Haman made for Mordecai (EL)who spoke good in behalf of the king!” And the king said, “Hang him on it.” 10 (EM)So they hanged Haman on the wooden gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, (EN)and the king’s anger subsided.

Mordecai Promoted

On that day King Ahasuerus gave the house of Haman, (EO)the enemy of the Jews, to Queen Esther; and Mordecai came before the king, because Esther had disclosed (EP)what he was to her. Then (EQ)the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken away from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

Then Esther spoke again [by]to the king, fell at his feet, wept, and pleaded for his compassion to avert the evil scheme of Haman the Agagite and his plot which he had devised against the Jews. And (ER)the king extended the golden scepter to Esther. So Esther got up and stood before the king. Then she said, “(ES)If it pleases the king and if I have found favor before him, and the matter seems proper to the king and I am pleasing in his sight, let it be written to revoke the (ET)letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to eliminate the Jews who are in all the king’s provinces. For (EU)how can I endure to see the disaster which will happen to my people, and how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?” So King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Behold, (EV)I have given the house of Haman to Esther, and they have hanged him on the wooden gallows because he had reached out with his hand against the Jews.

The King’s Decree Avenges the Jews

Now you write to the Jews [bz]as you see fit, in the king’s name, and (EW)seal it with the king’s signet ring; for a decree which is written in the name of the king and sealed with the king’s signet ring (EX)may not be revoked.”

(EY)So the king’s scribes were summoned at that time in the third month (that is, the month Sivan), on the twenty-third [ca]day; and it was written in accordance with everything that Mordecai commanded the Jews, the satraps, the governors, and the officials of the provinces which extended (EZ)from India to [cb]Cush, 127 provinces, to (FA)every province according to its script, and to every people according to their language, as well as to the Jews according to their script and their language. 10 He wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king’s signet ring, and sent letters by couriers on (FB)horses, riding on royal relay horses, offspring of racing mares. 11 [cc]In the letters the king granted the Jews who were in each and every city the right (FC)to assemble and to defend their lives, (FD)to destroy, kill, and eliminate the entire army of any people or province which was going to attack them, including children and women, and (FE)to plunder their spoils, 12 on (FF)one day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month (that is, the month Adar). 13 (FG)A copy of the edict to be [cd]issued as law in each and every province was published to all the peoples, so that the Jews would be ready for this day to avenge themselves on their enemies. 14 The couriers, hurrying and speeded by the king’s command, left, riding on the royal relay horses; and the decree was issued at the citadel in Susa.

15 Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king (FH)in a royal robe of violet and white, with a large crown of gold and (FI)a garment of fine linen and purple; and (FJ)the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. 16 For the Jews there was (FK)light, joy, jubilation, and honor. 17 In each and every province and in each and every city, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree arrived, there was joy and jubilation for the Jews, a feast and a [ce](FL)holiday. And (FM)many among the peoples of the land [cf]became Jews, because the dread of the Jews had fallen on them.

The Jews Destroy Their Enemies

Now (FN)in the twelfth month (that is, the month Adar), on (FO)the thirteenth [cg]day, (FP)when the king’s command and edict were to be put into effect, on the day when the enemies of the Jews hoped to gain the mastery over them, it turned out to the contrary so that the Jews themselves gained mastery over those who hated them. (FQ)The Jews assembled in their cities throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus to [ch]attack those who sought [ci]to harm them; and no one could stand against them, (FR)because the dread of them had fallen on all the peoples. Even all the officials of the provinces, (FS)the satraps, the governors, and those who were doing the king’s business were supporting the Jews, because the dread of Mordecai had fallen on them. For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and the news about him spread throughout the provinces; for the man Mordecai (FT)became greater and greater. So (FU)the Jews struck all their enemies with [cj]the sword, killing and destroying; and they did as they pleased to those who hated them. At the citadel in Susa the Jews killed and eliminated five hundred men, and they killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha, Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha, Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha, 10 (FV)the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy; but (FW)they did not lay their hands on the plunder.

11 On that day the number of those who were killed at the citadel in Susa [ck]was reported to the king. 12 And the king said to Queen Esther, “The Jews have killed and eliminated five hundred men and the ten sons of Haman at the citadel in Susa. What have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! (FX)Now what is your request? It shall also be granted you. And what is your further wish? It shall also be done.” 13 Then Esther said, “If it pleases the king, (FY)let tomorrow also be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do according to the edict of today; and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the wooden gallows.” 14 So the king commanded that it was to be done so; and an edict was issued in Susa, and Haman’s ten sons were hanged. 15 The Jews who were in Susa assembled also on the fourteenth day of the month Adar and killed (FZ)three hundred men in Susa, but (GA)they did not lay their hands on the plunder.

16 Now (GB)the rest of the Jews who were in the king’s provinces (GC)assembled, to defend their lives and [cl]rid themselves of their enemies, and to kill seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they did not lay their hands on the plunder. 17 This was done on (GD)the thirteenth day of the month Adar, and (GE)on the fourteenth [cm]day they rested and made it a day of feasting and rejoicing.

18 But the Jews who were in Susa (GF)assembled on the thirteenth and (GG)the fourteenth [cn]of the same month, and they rested on the fifteenth [co]day and made it a day of feasting and rejoicing. 19 Therefore the Jews of the rural areas, who live in (GH)the rural towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a [cp](GI)holiday for rejoicing and feasting and (GJ)sending portions of food to one another.

The Feast of Purim Instituted

20 Then Mordecai recorded these events, and he sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 obliging them to celebrate the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day [cq]of the same month, annually, 22 because on those days the Jews [cr]rid themselves of their enemies, and it was a month which was (GK)turned for them from grief into joy, and from mourning into a [cs]holiday; that they were to make them days of feasting and rejoicing, and (GL)sending portions of food to one another, and gifts to the poor.

23 So the Jews undertook what they had started to do, and what Mordecai had written to them. 24 For Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the adversary of all the Jews, had schemed against the Jews to eliminate them, and (GM)had cast Pur, that is the lot, to disturb them and eliminate them. 25 But (GN)when it came [ct]to the king’s attention, he commanded by letter (GO)that his wicked scheme which he had devised against the Jews (GP)was to return on his own head, and that he and his sons were to be hanged on the wooden gallows. 26 Therefore they called these days Purim after the name of [cu]Pur. [cv]And (GQ)because of the instructions in this letter, both what they had seen in this regard and what had happened to them, 27 the Jews established and [cw]made a custom for themselves, their [cx]descendants, and for (GR)all those who allied themselves with them, so that [cy]they would not fail (GS)to celebrate these two days according to their [cz]regulation and according to their appointed time annually. 28 So these days were to be remembered and celebrated throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and these days of Purim were not to [da]be neglected by the Jews, or their memory [db]fade from their [dc]descendants.

29 Then Queen Esther, (GT)daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, wrote with full authority to confirm (GU)this second letter about Purim. 30 He sent letters to all the Jews, (GV)to the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, namely, words of peace and truth, 31 to establish these days of Purim at their appointed times, just as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had established for them, and just as they had established for themselves and for their [dd]descendants, with [de]instructions (GW)for their times of fasting and their mourning. 32 The command of Esther established these [df]customs for (GX)Purim, and it was written in the book.

Mordecai’s Greatness

10 Now King Ahasuerus imposed a tax on the land and the (GY)coastlands of the sea. And every accomplishment of his authority and power, and the full account of the greatness of Mordecai (GZ)with which the king honored him, are they not written in (HA)the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia? For Mordecai the Jew was (HB)second only to King Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews and in favor with his many kinsmen, (HC)one who sought the good of his people and one who spoke for the welfare of his entire [dg]nation.

Job’s Character and Wealth

There was a man in the (HD)land of Uz whose name was (HE)Job; and that man was (HF)blameless, upright, (HG)fearing God and (HH)turning away from evil. (HI)Seven sons and three daughters were born to him. (HJ)His possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was (HK)the greatest of all the [dh]men of the east. His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send word and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send word to them and consecrate them, getting up early in the morning and offering (HL)burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “(HM)Perhaps my sons have sinned and (HN)cursed God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

(HO)Now there was a day when the [di](HP)sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and [dj]Satan also came among them. The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “(HQ)From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” The Lord said to Satan, “Have you [dk]considered (HR)My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, (HS)a blameless and upright man, [dl]fearing God and turning away from evil.” Then (HT)Satan answered the [dm]Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 (HU)Have You not made a fence around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? (HV)You have blessed the work of his hands, and his (HW)possessions have increased in the land. 11 (HX)But reach out with Your hand now and (HY)touch all that he has; he will certainly curse You to Your face.” 12 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your [dn]power; only do not reach out and put your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord.

Satan Allowed to Test Job

13 Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the female donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and [do]the (HZ)Sabeans [dp]attacked and took them. They also [dq]killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and [dr]I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was still speaking, another came and said, “(IA)The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was still speaking, another came and said, “The (IB)Chaldeans formed three units and made a raid on the camels and took them, and [ds]killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

20 Then Job got up, (IC)tore his robe, and shaved his head; then he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 He said,

(ID)Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked I shall return there.
The (IE)Lord gave and the Lord has taken away.
Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

22 (IF)Despite all this, Job did not sin, nor did he [dt]blame God.

Job Loses His Health

(IG)Again, there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and [du]Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” The Lord said to Satan, “Have you [dv]considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man [dw]fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still (IH)holds firm to his integrity, although you incited Me against him to [dx]ruin him without cause.” Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has, he will give for his life. (II)However, reach out with Your hand now, and (IJ)touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face!” So the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your [dy]power, only spare his life.”

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with (IK)severe boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head. And Job took a piece of pottery to scrape himself while (IL)he was sitting in the ashes.

Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold firm your integrity? Curse God and die!” 10 But he said to her, “You are speaking as one of the foolish women speaks. (IM)Shall we actually accept good from God but not accept adversity?” (IN)Despite all this, Job did not sin with his lips.

11 Now when Job’s three friends heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, they came, each one from his own place—Eliphaz the (IO)Temanite, Bildad the (IP)Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to (IQ)sympathize with him and comfort him. 12 When they [dz]looked from a distance and did not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them (IR)tore his robe, and they (IS)threw dust over their heads toward the sky. 13 (IT)Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

Job’s Lament

Afterward Job opened his mouth and cursed [ea]the day of his birth. And Job [eb]said,

(IU)May the day on which I was to be born perish,
As well as the night which said, ‘A [ec]boy is conceived.’
May that day be darkness;
May God above not care for it,
Nor light shine on it.
May (IV)darkness and black gloom claim it;
May a cloud settle on it;
May the blackness of the day terrify it.
As for that night, may darkness seize it;
May it not rejoice among the days of the year;
May it not come into the number of the months.
Behold, may that night be barren;
May no joyful shout enter it.
May those curse it who curse the day,
Who are [ed]prepared to (IW)disturb Leviathan.
May the stars of its twilight be darkened;
May it wait for light but have none,
And may it not see the [ee]breaking dawn;
10 Because it did not shut the opening of my mother’s womb,
Or hide trouble from my eyes.

11 (IX)Why did I not die [ef]at birth,
Come out of the womb and pass away?
12 Why were the knees there in front of me,
And why the breasts, that I would nurse?
13 For now I (IY)would have lain down and been quiet;
I would have slept then, I would have been at rest,
14 With (IZ)kings and (JA)counselors of the earth,
Who rebuilt (JB)ruins for themselves;
15 Or with (JC)rulers (JD)who had gold,
Who were filling their houses with silver.
16 Or like a miscarriage which is [eg]hidden, I would not exist,
As infants that never saw light.
17 There the wicked cease from raging,
And there the [eh]weary are at (JE)rest.
18 The prisoners are at ease together;
They do not hear the voice of the taskmaster.
19 The small and the great are there,
And the slave is free from his master.

20 “Why is (JF)light given to one burdened with grief,
And life to the bitter of soul,
21 Who [ei](JG)long for death, but there is none,
And dig for it more than for (JH)hidden treasures;
22 Who are filled with jubilation,
And rejoice when they find the grave?
23 Why is light given to a man (JI)whose way is hidden,
And whom (JJ)God has shut off?
24 For (JK)my groaning comes at the sight of my food,
And (JL)my cries pour out like water.
25 For [ej](JM)what I fear comes upon me,
And what I dread [ek]encounters me.
26 I (JN)am not at ease, nor am I quiet,
And I am not at rest, but turmoil comes.”

Eliphaz Says the Innocent Do Not Suffer

Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded,

“If one ventures a word with you, will you become impatient?
But (JO)who can refrain [el]from speaking?
Behold, (JP)you have taught many,
And you have strengthened weak hands.
Your words have helped the stumbling to stand,
And you have strengthened [em]feeble knees.
But now it comes to you, and you (JQ)are impatient;
It (JR)touches you, and you are horrified.
Is your [en](JS)fear of God not (JT)your confidence,
And the integrity of your ways your hope?

“Remember now, (JU)who ever perished being innocent?
Or where were the upright destroyed?
According to what I have seen, (JV)those who [eo]plow wrongdoing
And those who sow trouble harvest it.
By (JW)the breath of God they perish,
And (JX)by the [ep]blast of His anger they come to an end.
10 The (JY)roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion,
And the teeth of the young lions are broken out.
11 The (JZ)lion perishes for lack of prey,
And the (KA)cubs of the lioness are scattered.

12 “Now a word (KB)was brought to me secretly,
And my ear received a (KC)whisper of it.
13 Amid disquieting (KD)thoughts from visions of the night,
When deep sleep falls on people,
14 Dread came upon me, and trembling,
And made [eq]all my bones shake.
15 Then a [er]spirit passed by my face;
The hair of my flesh stood up.
16 Something was standing still, but I could not recognize its appearance;
A form was before my eyes;
There was silence, then I heard a voice:
17 ‘Can (KE)mankind be righteous [es]before God?
Can a man be pure [et]before his (KF)Maker?
18 (KG)He puts no trust even in His servants;
And He accuses His angels of error.
19 How much more those who live in (KH)houses of clay,
Whose (KI)foundation is in the dust,
Who are crushed before the moth!
20 (KJ)Between morning and evening they are broken in pieces;
Unregarded, they (KK)perish forever.
21 Is their (KL)tent-cord not pulled out within them?
They die, yet (KM)without wisdom.’

God Is Just

“Call now, is there anyone who will answer you?
And to which of the (KN)holy ones will you turn?
For (KO)irritation kills the fool,
And jealousy brings death to the simple.
I have seen the (KP)fool taking root,
And I (KQ)cursed his home immediately.
His (KR)sons are far from safety,
They are also [eu]oppressed at the gate,
And there is no one to save them.
[ev]The hungry devour his harvest
And take it to a place of thorns,
And the [ew](KS)schemer is eager for their wealth.
For (KT)disaster does not come from the dust,
Nor does trouble sprout from the ground,
For (KU)man is born for trouble,
As sparks fly upward.

“But as for me, I would (KV)seek God,
And I would make my plea before God,
Who (KW)does great and unsearchable things,
[ex]Wonders without number.
10 He (KX)gives rain on the earth,
And sends water on the fields,
11 So that (KY)He sets on high those who are lowly,
And those who mourn are lifted to safety.
12 He (KZ)frustrates the schemes of the shrewd,
So that their hands cannot attain success.
13 He (LA)captures the wise by their own cleverness,
And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted.
14 By day they (LB)meet with darkness,
And grope at noon as in the night.
15 But He saves from (LC)the sword of their mouth,
And (LD)the poor from the hand of the strong.
16 So the helpless has hope,
And (LE)injustice has shut its mouth.

17 “Behold, (LF)happy is the person whom God disciplines,
So do not reject the (LG)discipline of [ey]the Almighty.
18 For (LH)He inflicts pain, and [ez]gives relief;
He wounds, but His hands also heal.
19 In six troubles (LI)He will save you;
Even in seven, (LJ)evil will not touch you.
20 In (LK)famine He will redeem you from death,
And (LL)in war, from the power of the sword.
21 You will be (LM)hidden [fa]from the scourge of the tongue,
(LN)And you will not be afraid of violence when it comes.
22 You will (LO)laugh at violence and hunger,
(LP)And you will not be afraid of [fb]wild animals.
23 For you will be in league with the stones of the field,
And (LQ)the animals of the field will be at peace with you.
24 You will know that your (LR)tent is secure,
For you will visit your home and [fc]have nothing missing.
25 You will also know that your [fd](LS)descendants will be many,
And (LT)your offspring as the grass of the earth.
26 You will (LU)come to the grave at a ripe age,
Like the stacking of grain in its season.
27 Behold this; we have investigated it, and so it is.
Hear it, and know for yourself.”

Job’s Friends Are No Help

Then Job responded,

(LV)Oh if only my grief were actually weighed
And laid in the balances together with my disaster!
For then it would be (LW)heavier than the sand of the seas;
For that reason my words have been rash.
For the (LX)arrows of the Almighty are within me,
[fe]My spirit drinks their (LY)poison;
The (LZ)terrors of God line up against me.
Does the (MA)wild donkey bray over his grass,
Or does the ox low over his feed?
Can something tasteless be eaten without salt,
Or is there any taste in the [ff]juice of an alkanet plant?
My soul (MB)refuses to touch them;
They are like loathsome food to me.

“Oh, that my request might come to pass,
And that God would grant my hope!
Oh, that God would (MC)decide to crush me,
That He would let loose His hand and cut me off!
10 But it is still my comfort,
And I rejoice in unsparing pain,
That I (MD)have not [fg]denied the words of the Holy One.
11 What is my strength, that I should wait?
And what is my end, that I should [fh](ME)endure?
12 Is my strength the strength of stones,
Or is my flesh bronze?
13 Is it that my (MF)help is not within me,
And that a (MG)good outcome is driven away from me?

14 “For the (MH)despairing man there should be kindness from his friend;
So that he does not (MI)abandon the [fi]fear of the Almighty.
15 My brothers have acted (MJ)deceitfully like a [fj]wadi,
Like the torrents of [fk]wadis which drain away,
16 Which are darkened because of ice,
And into which the snow [fl]melts.
17 When (MK)they dry up, they vanish;
When it is hot, they disappear from their place.
18 The [fm]paths of their course wind along,
They go up into wasteland and perish.
19 The caravans of (ML)Tema looked,
The travelers of (MM)Sheba hoped for them.
20 They (MN)were put to shame, for they had trusted,
They came there and were humiliated.
21 Indeed, you have now become such,
(MO)You see terrors and are afraid.
22 Have I said, ‘Give me something,’
Or, ‘Offer a bribe for me from your wealth,’
23 Or, ‘Save me from the hand of the enemy,’
Or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the tyrants’?

24 “Teach me, and (MP)I will be silent;
And show me how I have done wrong.
25 How painful are honest words!
But what does your argument prove?
26 Do you intend to rebuke my words,
When the (MQ)words of one in despair belong to the wind?
27 You would even (MR)cast lots for (MS)the orphans,
And (MT)barter over your friend.
28 Now please look at me,
And see if I am (MU)lying to your face.
29 Please turn away, let there be no injustice;
Turn away, (MV)my righteousness is still in it.
30 Is there injustice on my tongue?
Does (MW)my palate not discern disasters?

Job’s Life Seems Futile

[fn]Is a person not (MX)forced to labor on earth,
And are his days not like the days of (MY)a hired worker?
As a slave pants for the shade,
And as a hired worker who eagerly waits for his wages,
So I am allotted worthless months,
And (MZ)nights of trouble are apportioned to me.
When I (NA)lie down, I say,
‘When shall I arise?’
But the night continues,
And I am continually tossing until dawn.
My (NB)flesh is clothed with maggots and a crust of dirt,
My skin hardens and [fo]oozes.
My days are (NC)swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,
And they come to an end (ND)without hope.

“Remember that my life (NE)is a mere breath;
My eye will (NF)not see goodness again.
The (NG)eye of him who sees me will no longer look at me;
Your eyes will be on me, but (NH)I will not exist.
When a (NI)cloud vanishes, it is gone;
In the same way (NJ)one who goes down to [fp](NK)Sheol does not come up.
10 He will not return to his house again,
Nor will (NL)his place know about him anymore.

11 “Therefore (NM)I will not restrain my mouth;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit,
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
12 Am I the sea, or (NN)the sea monster,
That You set a guard over me?
13 If I say, ‘(NO)My couch will comfort me,
My bed will [fq]ease my complaint,’
14 Then You frighten me with dreams,
And terrify me by visions,
15 So that my soul would choose suffocation,
Death rather than my [fr]pains.
16 I [fs](NP)waste away; I will not live forever.
Leave me alone, (NQ)for my days are only a breath.
17 (NR)What is man that You exalt him,
And that You [ft]are concerned about him,
18 That (NS)You examine him every morning
And put him to the test every moment?
19 [fu](NT)Will You never turn Your gaze away from me,
Nor leave me alone until I swallow my spittle?
20 (NU)Have I sinned? What have I done to You,
(NV)Watcher of mankind?
Why have You made me Your target,
So that I am a burden to myself?

And take away my [fv]guilt?
For now I will (NX)lie down in the dust;
And You will search for me, (NY)but I will no longer exist.”
