Nehemiah Prays for His People
1 The words of (A)Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah.
It came to pass in the month of Chislev, in the (B)twentieth year, as I was in (C)Shushan[a] the [b]citadel, 2 that (D)Hanani one of my brethren came with men from Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. 3 And they said to me, “The survivors who are left from the captivity in the (E)province are there in great distress and (F)reproach. (G)The wall of Jerusalem (H)is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”
4 So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
5 And I said: “I pray, (I)Lord God of heaven, O great and (J)awesome God, (K)You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love [c]You and observe [d]Your commandments, 6 please let Your ear be attentive and (L)Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before You now, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, and (M)confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against You. Both my father’s house and I have sinned. 7 (N)We have acted very corruptly against You, and have (O)not kept the commandments, the statutes, nor the ordinances which You commanded Your servant Moses. 8 Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, (P)‘If you [e]are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations; 9 (Q)but if you return to Me, and keep My commandments and do them, (R)though some of you were cast out to the farthest part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and bring them to the place which I have chosen as a dwelling for My name.’ 10 (S)Now these are Your servants and Your people, whom You have redeemed by Your great power, and by Your strong hand. 11 O Lord, I pray, please (T)let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants who (U)desire to fear Your name; and let Your servant prosper this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”
For I was the king’s (V)cupbearer.

1 이것은 하가랴의 아들 느헤미야가 한 말이다.
나는 제 이십년 기슬르월[a]에 수사 성[b]의 왕궁 구역[c]에 있었다. 2 그때에 나의 친족 가운데 하나인 하나니가 다른 몇 사람과 함께 유다에서 나를 찾아 왔다. 나는 그들에게 포로로 잡혀 오지 않고 그곳에 남아 있는 유다 사람들과 예루살렘에 대해서 물었다.
3 그들이 나에게 대답하였다. “포로로 잡혀오지 않고 그 지방에 남아 있는 사람들이 매우 고생스럽고 수치스러운 생활을 하고 있습니다. 예루살렘의 성벽은 허물어지고 성문들은 다 불타버렸습니다.”
4 나는 이 말을 듣고 주저앉아 울었다. 나는 여러 날 동안 하늘에 계신 하나님 앞에서 슬퍼하고 금식하면서 기도하였다. 5 나는 이렇게 기도하였다.
오, 주 하늘의 하나님. 당신은 위대하시니 우리가 당신을 높이 받들어 모십니다. 당신께서는 당신을 사랑하고 당신의 명령에 순종하는 사람들과 세우신 사랑의 계약을 지키십니다.
6 저는 당신의 종 이스라엘 자손을 위해 당신 앞에서 밤낮으로 기도를 드리고 있습니다. 부디 이 종이 드리는 기도를 귀 담아 들으시고 살펴 주십시오. 우리 이스라엘 자손이 당신을 거스르고 죄를 지었음을 고백합니다. 저와 저의 아버지의 집안도 죄를 지었습니다. 7 우리가 당신께 죄를 지었습니다. 우리는 당신의 종 모세를 시켜 당신께서 우리에게 주신 계명과 가르침과 율법을 지키지 않았습니다.
8 당신의 종 모세에게 주신 말씀을 기억하여 주십시오. 당신은 모세에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희가 나에 대한 신의를 저버리면 나는 너희를 뭇 민족 가운데로 흩어 버릴 것이다. 9 그러나 너희가 나에게 돌아와 나의 계명을 잘 지키고 그대로 실천하면 내가 이렇게 해 주겠다. 너희 백성이 땅 끝으로 쫓겨나 있더라도 나는 그들을 그곳에서 불러 모으겠다. 그리고 나의 이름을 두려고 택하여 놓은 곳으로 그들을 데려 오겠다.”
10 이들은 당신께서 크신 능력과 강한 손으로 건져내신 당신의 종이며 당신의 백성입니다. 11 오, 나의 주님. 이 종의 기도를 들어주십시오. 그리고 당신의 이름을 높이 우러러 받들고자 하는 당신의 종들이 드리는 기도를 들어주십시오. 오늘 제가 왕에게 도움을 청할 때, 저를 도와주시어 왕이 저에게 자비를 베풀게 하여 주십시오.
그때에 나는 왕에게 술잔을 올리는 신하[d]였다.

Report from Jerusalem
1 The words of (A)Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah.
Now it happened in the month of (B)Chislev, (C)in the twentieth year, as I was in (D)Susa the citadel, 2 that (E)Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem. 3 And they said to me, “The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and (F)shame. (G)The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, (H)and its gates are destroyed by fire.”
Nehemiah's Prayer
4 As soon as I heard these words I (I)sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the (J)God of heaven. 5 And I said, “O Lord God of heaven, (K)the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6 (L)let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, (M)confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even (N)I and my father's house have sinned. 7 (O)We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules (P)that you commanded your servant Moses. 8 Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, (Q)I will scatter you among the peoples, 9 (R)but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, (S)though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them (T)to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’ 10 (U)They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. 11 O Lord, (V)let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”
Now I was (W)cupbearer to the king.
