Nehemías 1

1 Las palabras de Nehemías, hijo de Hacalías. Y acaeció en el mes de Quisleu, en el año veinte, estando yo en Susa, capital del reino,

²que vino Hanani, uno de mis hermanos, él y ciertos varones de Judá, y les pregunté por los judíos que habían escapado, que habían quedado de la cautividad, y por Jerusalén.

³Y me dijeron: El remanente, los que quedaron de la cautividad allí en la provincia, están en gran mal y afrenta, y el muro de Jerusalén derribado, y sus puertas quemadas a fuego.

⁴Y fue que, cuando yo oí estas palabras, me senté y lloré, y me enluté por algunos días, y ayuné y oré delante del Dios de los cielos.

⁵Y dije: Te ruego, oh SEÑOR, Dios de los cielos, fuerte, grande, y terrible, que guardas el pacto y la misericordia a los que te aman y guardan tus mandamientos;

⁶esté ahora atento tu oído, y tus ojos abiertos, para oír la oración de tu esclavo, que yo hago ahora delante de ti día y noche, por los hijos de Israel tus esclavos; y confieso los pecados de los hijos de Israel con que hemos pecado contra ti; sí, yo y la casa de mi padre hemos pecado.

⁷En extremo nos hemos corrompido contra ti, y no hemos guardado los mandamientos, y estatutos y juicios, que mandaste a Moisés tu esclavo.

⁸Acuérdate ahora de la palabra que ordenaste a Moisés tu esclavo, diciendo: Si vosotros prevaricareis, yo os esparciré por los pueblos;

⁹mas si os volviereis a mí, y guardareis mis mandamientos, y los pusiereis por obra. Si fuere vuestro lanzamiento hasta el cabo de los cielos, de allí los juntaré; y los traeré al lugar que escogí para hacer habitar allí mi nombre.

¹⁰Ellos, pues, son tus esclavos y tu pueblo, los cuales rescataste con tu gran fortaleza, y con tu mano fuerte.

¹¹Te ruego, oh SEÑOR, esté ahora atento tu oído a la oración de tu esclavo, y a la oración de tus esclavos, quienes desean temer tu nombre; y ahora concede hoy buen suceso a tu esclavo, y dale gracia delante de aquel varón. Porque yo era maestresala del rey.

Nehemiah Prays for His People

1 The words of ^(A)Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah.

It came to pass in the month of Chislev, in the ^(B)twentieth year, as I was in ^(C)Shushan^[a] the ^[b]citadel, ²that ^(D)Hanani one of my brethren came with men from Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. ³And they said to me, “The survivors who are left from the captivity in the ^(E)province are there in great distress and ^(F)reproach. ^(G)The wall of Jerusalem ^(H)is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”

⁴So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

⁵And I said: “I pray, ^(I)Lord God of heaven, O great and ^(J)awesome God, ^(K)You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love ^[c]You and observe ^[d]Your commandments, ⁶please let Your ear be attentive and ^(L)Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before You now, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, and ^(M)confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against You. Both my father’s house and I have sinned. ⁷^(N)We have acted very corruptly against You, and have ^(O)not kept the commandments, the statutes, nor the ordinances which You commanded Your servant Moses. ⁸Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, ^(P)‘If you ^[e]are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations; ⁹^(Q)but if you return to Me, and keep My commandments and do them, ^(R)though some of you were cast out to the farthest part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and bring them to the place which I have chosen as a dwelling for My name.’ ¹⁰^(S)Now these are Your servants and Your people, whom You have redeemed by Your great power, and by Your strong hand. ¹¹O Lord, I pray, please ^(T)let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants who ^(U)desire to fear Your name; and let Your servant prosper this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”

For I was the king’s ^(V)cupbearer.

Nehemiah’s Prayer

1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:

In the month of Kislev^(A) in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,^(B) ²Hanani,^(C) one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant^(D) that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.

³They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.^(E)”

⁴When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.^(F) For some days I mourned and fasted^(G) and prayed before the God of heaven. ⁵Then I said:

“Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God,^(H) who keeps his covenant of love^(I) with those who love him and keep his commandments, ⁶let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear^(J) the prayer^(K) your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess^(L) the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. ⁷We have acted very wickedly^(M) toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

⁸“Remember^(N) the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter^(O) you among the nations, ⁹but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather^(P) them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’^(Q)

¹⁰“They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.^(R) ¹¹Lord, let your ear be attentive^(S) to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor^(T) in the presence of this man.”

I was cupbearer^(U) to the king.

Nehemiah's Prayer

⁴As soon as I heard these words I ^(I)sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the ^(J)God of heaven. ⁵And I said, “O Lord God of heaven, ^(K)the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, ⁶^(L)let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, ^(M)confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even ^(N)I and my father's house have sinned. ⁷^(O)We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules ^(P)that you commanded your servant Moses. ⁸Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, ^(Q)I will scatter you among the peoples, ⁹^(R)but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, ^(S)though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them ^(T)to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’ ¹⁰^(U)They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. ¹¹O Lord, ^(V)let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”

Now I was ^(W)cupbearer to the king.
