Dedication of the Wall

27 And at (A)the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites in all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem to celebrate the dedication with gladness, with thanksgivings and with singing, (B)with cymbals, harps, and lyres. 28 And the sons of the singers gathered together from the district surrounding Jerusalem and from the villages of the Netophathites; 29 also from Beth-gilgal and from the region of Geba and Azmaveth, for the singers had built for themselves villages around Jerusalem. 30 And the priests and the Levites (C)purified themselves, and they purified the people and the gates and the wall.

31 Then I brought the leaders of Judah up onto the wall and appointed two great choirs that gave thanks. (D)One went to the south on the wall to (E)the Dung Gate. 32 And after them went Hoshaiah and half of the leaders of Judah, 33 and Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, 34 Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, and Jeremiah, 35 and certain of the priests' sons (F)with trumpets: Zechariah the son of Jonathan, son of Shemaiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Micaiah, son of Zaccur, son of Asaph; 36 and his relatives, Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani, (G)with the musical instruments of David (H)the man of God. And Ezra the scribe went before them. 37 At (I)the Fountain Gate they went up straight before them by (J)the stairs of the city of David, at the ascent of the wall, above the house of David, to (K)the Water Gate on the east.

38 (L)The other choir of those who gave thanks went to the north, and I followed them with half of the people, on the wall, above (M)the Tower of the Ovens, to (N)the Broad Wall, 39 and above (O)the Gate of Ephraim, and by (P)the Gate of Yeshanah,[a] and by (Q)the Fish Gate and (R)the Tower of Hananel and (S)the Tower of the Hundred, to (T)the Sheep Gate; and they came to a halt at (U)the Gate of the Guard. 40 So both choirs of those who gave thanks stood in the house of God, and I and half of the officials with me; 41 and the priests Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, (V)with trumpets; 42 and Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sang with Jezrahiah as their leader. 43 And they offered great sacrifices that day and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy; the women and children also rejoiced. And the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.

Service at the Temple

44 (W)On that day men were appointed over the storerooms, the contributions, the firstfruits, and the tithes, to gather into them the portions required by the Law for the priests and for the Levites according to the fields of the towns, for Judah rejoiced over the priests and the Levites who ministered. 45 And they performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did the singers and the gatekeepers, (X)according to the command of David and his son Solomon. 46 For long ago in the days of David and (Y)Asaph there were directors of the singers, and there were songs[b] of praise and thanksgiving to God. 47 And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel and in the days of Nehemiah gave the (Z)daily portions for the singers and the gatekeepers; (AA)and they set apart that which was for the Levites; (AB)and the Levites set apart that which was for the sons of Aaron.

Nehemiah's Final Reforms

13 On that day (AC)they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people. And in it was found written (AD)that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God, for they did not meet the people of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them—yet our God turned the curse into a blessing. As soon as the people heard the law, (AE)they separated from Israel all (AF)those of foreign descent.

Now before this, (AG)Eliashib the priest, who (AH)was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and who was related to (AI)Tobiah, prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously put the grain offering, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, (AJ)which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests. While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for (AK)in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes (AL)king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king and came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, (AM)preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber. Then I gave orders, and they (AN)cleansed the chambers, and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense.

10 I also found out that (AO)the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each (AP)to his field. 11 (AQ)So I confronted the officials and said, (AR)“Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations. 12 Then all Judah brought (AS)the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses. 13 And (AT)I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, (AU)for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers. 14 (AV)Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service.

15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses (AW)on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, (AX)which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And (AY)I warned them on the day when they sold food. 16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 (AZ)Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, (BA)profaning the Sabbath day? 18 (BB)Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster[c] on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

19 As soon as it (BC)began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 (BD)But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites (BE)that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. (BF)Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.

23 In those days also I saw the Jews (BG)who had married women (BH)of Ashdod, (BI)Ammon, and (BJ)Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people. 25 (BK)And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. (BL)And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. 26 (BM)Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? (BN)Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was (BO)beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin. 27 Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and (BP)act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”

28 And one of the sons of (BQ)Jehoiada, the son of (BR)Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of (BS)Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me. 29 (BT)Remember them, O my God, because they have desecrated the priesthood (BU)and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.

30 (BV)Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work; 31 and I provided (BW)for the wood offering (BX)at appointed times, and for the firstfruits.

Dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem

27 At the dedication(A) of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals,(B) harps and lyres.(C) 28 The musicians also were brought together from the region around Jerusalem—from the villages of the Netophathites,(D) 29 from Beth Gilgal, and from the area of Geba and Azmaveth, for the musicians had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. 30 When the priests and Levites had purified themselves ceremonially, they purified the people,(E) the gates and the wall.

31 I had the leaders of Judah go up on top of[a] the wall. I also assigned two large choirs to give thanks. One was to proceed on top of[b] the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate.(F) 32 Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed them, 33 along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, 34 Judah, Benjamin,(G) Shemaiah, Jeremiah, 35 as well as some priests with trumpets,(H) and also Zechariah son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zakkur, the son of Asaph, 36 and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah and Hanani—with musical instruments(I) prescribed by David the man of God.(J) Ezra(K) the teacher of the Law led the procession. 37 At the Fountain Gate(L) they continued directly up the steps of the City of David on the ascent to the wall and passed above the site of David’s palace to the Water Gate(M) on the east.

38 The second choir proceeded in the opposite direction. I followed them on top of[c] the wall, together with half the people—past the Tower of the Ovens(N) to the Broad Wall,(O) 39 over the Gate of Ephraim,(P) the Jeshanah[d] Gate,(Q) the Fish Gate,(R) the Tower of Hananel(S) and the Tower of the Hundred,(T) as far as the Sheep Gate.(U) At the Gate of the Guard they stopped.

40 The two choirs that gave thanks then took their places in the house of God; so did I, together with half the officials, 41 as well as the priests—Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah and Hananiah with their trumpets— 42 and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malkijah, Elam and Ezer. The choirs sang under the direction of Jezrahiah. 43 And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.

44 At that time men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms(V) for the contributions, firstfruits and tithes.(W) From the fields around the towns they were to bring into the storerooms the portions required by the Law for the priests and the Levites, for Judah was pleased with the ministering priests and Levites.(X) 45 They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did also the musicians and gatekeepers, according to the commands of David(Y) and his son Solomon.(Z) 46 For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph,(AA) there had been directors for the musicians and for the songs of praise(AB) and thanksgiving to God. 47 So in the days of Zerubbabel and of Nehemiah, all Israel contributed the daily portions for the musicians and the gatekeepers. They also set aside the portion for the other Levites, and the Levites set aside the portion for the descendants of Aaron.(AC)

Nehemiah’s Final Reforms

Before this, Eliashib the priest had been put in charge of the storerooms(AI) of the house of our God. He was closely associated with Tobiah,(AJ) and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store the grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes(AK) of grain, new wine and olive oil prescribed for the Levites, musicians and gatekeepers, as well as the contributions for the priests.

But while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes(AL) king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I asked his permission and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib(AM) had done in providing Tobiah(AN) a room in the courts of the house of God. I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.(AO) I gave orders to purify the rooms,(AP) and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense.(AQ)

10 I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them,(AR) and that all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields.(AS) 11 So I rebuked the officials and asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?”(AT) Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts.

12 All Judah brought the tithes(AU) of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms.(AV) 13 I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because they were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.(AW)

14 Remember(AX) me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services.

15 In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath.(AY) Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day. 16 People from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath(AZ) to the people of Judah. 17 I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this wicked thing you are doing—desecrating the Sabbath day? 18 Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity on us and on this city?(BA) Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.”(BB)

19 When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath,(BC) I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Once or twice the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem. 21 But I warned them and said, “Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you.” From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.

Remember(BD) me for this also, my God, and show mercy to me according to your great love.

23 Moreover, in those days I saw men of Judah who had married(BE) women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab.(BF) 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language(BG) of Judah. 25 I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath(BH) in God’s name and said: “You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves.(BI) 26 Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him.(BJ) He was loved by his God,(BK) and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women.(BL) 27 Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying(BM) foreign women?”

28 One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib(BN) the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat(BO) the Horonite. And I drove him away from me.

29 Remember(BP) them, my God, because they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.(BQ)

30 So I purified the priests and the Levites of everything foreign,(BR) and assigned them duties, each to his own task. 31 I also made provision for contributions of wood(BS) at designated times, and for the firstfruits.(BT)

Remember(BU) me with favor, my God.

But I want you to understand that (E)the head of every man is Christ, (F)the head of a wife[a] is her husband,[b] and (G)the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but every wife[c] who prays or (H)prophesies (I)with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same (J)as if her head were shaven. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. For a man ought not to cover his head, since (K)he is the image and glory of God, but (L)woman is the glory of man. For (M)man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but (N)woman for man. 10 That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.[d] 11 Nevertheless, (O)in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; 12 for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. I praise you(C) for remembering me in everything(D) and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you.(E) But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ,(F) and the head of the woman is man,[a](G) and the head of Christ is God.(H) Every man who prays or prophesies(I) with his head covered dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies(J) with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.(K) For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.

A man ought not to cover his head,[b] since he is the image(L) and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
