Ezra leest voor uit de wet van God

8 Aan het begin van de zevende maand verzamelden alle Israëlieten zich op het plein voor de Waterpoort. Zij vroegen de priester Ezra voor te lezen uit de wet die de Here door Mozes aan Israël had gegeven. 2-4 Ezra haalde de boekrol waarin de wet van Mozes was opgeschreven. Hij ging staan op een houten verhoging die speciaal voor deze gelegenheid was gemaakt. Zo kon iedereen hem zien, terwijl hij las. Hij stond aan het begin van het plein voor de Waterpoort en las voor van zonsopgang tot in de namiddag. Ieder die oud genoeg was om het te begrijpen, luisterde aandachtig. Rechts van hem stonden Mattithja, Sema, Anaja, Uria, Hilkia en Ma aseja. Links van hem Pedaja, Misaël, Malkía, Hasum, Hasbaddana, Zacharia en Mesullam.

5 Toen de mensen zagen dat Ezra de boekrol opende, stond iedereen op. 6 Ezra loofde de Here, de grote God, en het hele volk zei ‘Amen, amen!’ en hief de handen omhoog. Toen knielden zij, bogen diep en aanbaden de Here. 7,8 Tijdens het voorlezen liepen de Levieten Jesua, Bani, Serebja, Jamin, Akkub, Sabbethai, Hodía, Maäseja, Kelita, Azarja, Jozabad, Hanan en Pelaja langs de mensen om hun de betekenis van het gelezene uit te leggen, zodat de mensen het konden begrijpen.

9 Alle aanwezigen barstten in tranen uit bij het horen van de geboden uit de wet. Maar Ezra, die Gods wet kende, en ik als gouverneur en de Levieten die de uitleg gaven, zeiden tegen hen: ‘Huil niet op een dag als vandaag! Want vandaag is het een heilige dag voor de Here, uw God. Het is een feestdag, waarbij een feestmaal hoort! 10 Stuur een deel van uw maaltijd naar de arme mensen. Wees niet verdrietig, maar put kracht uit de vreugde die de Here u geeft.’ 11 Ook de Levieten kalmeerden het volk door te zeggen: ‘Wees stil en treur niet langer, want dit is een heilige dag!’ 12 Toen gingen de mensen weg om een feestmaal klaar te maken en een deel ervan gaven zij weg aan anderen. Overal heerste grote vreugde, want de mensen hadden Gods woorden gehoord en begrepen.

13 De volgende dag kwamen de familiehoofden, de priesters en de Levieten bij Ezra om de wet nader te bestuderen. 14 Al lezend ontdekten zij dat de Here het volk Israël had opgedragen in hutten te wonen tijdens het Loofhuttenfeest. Dat feest viel juist in die maand! 15 In alle steden, óók in Jeruzalem, moest worden bekendgemaakt dat de bevolking de bergen moest intrekken om takken van de olijfboom, olijfwilg, mirte, palm en andere loofbomen te halen. Daarvan moesten zij hutten maken waarin zij tijdens het feest konden wonen. 16 Toen trokken de mensen naar de bergen, haalden er takken en bouwden hutten op de platte daken van hun huizen, op hun binnenplaats, op het plein voor de tempel, op het plein voor de Waterpoort of op het plein bij de Efraïm-poort. 17 Alle teruggekeerde ballingen woonden in deze hutten gedurende de zeven dagen van het feest. Iedereen was uitgelaten van vreugde, want het was de eerste keer sinds de tijd van Jozua, de zoon van Nun, dat dit feest weer werd gevierd! 18 Op elk van de zeven feestdagen werd uit de wet voorgelezen. En op de achtste dag was er een feestelijke slotbijeenkomst, zoals in de wet van Mozes was voorgeschreven.

8 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel.

2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.

3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:

6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.

8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

9 And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.

12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.

13 And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.

14 And they found written in the law which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:

15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.

17 And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness.

18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.

New English Translation

8 1 all the people gathered together[a] in the plaza which was in front of the Water Gate. They asked[b] Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the Lord had commanded Israel. 2 So Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly which included men and women and all those able to understand what they heard. (This happened on the first day of the seventh month.) 3 So he read it before the plaza in front of the Water Gate from dawn till noon[c] before the men and women and those children who could understand.[d] All the people were eager to hear[e] the book of the law.

4 Ezra the scribe stood on a towering wooden platform[f] constructed for this purpose. Standing near him on his right were Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Masseiah. On his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 Ezra opened the book in plain view[g] of all the people, for he was elevated above all the people. When he opened the book,[h] all the people stood up. 6 Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people replied “Amen! Amen!” as they lifted their hands. Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

7 Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—all of whom were Levites[i]—were teaching the people the law, as the people remained standing. 8 They read from the book of God’s law, explaining it[j] and imparting insight. Thus the people[k] gained understanding from what was read.

9 Then Nehemiah the governor,[l] Ezra the priestly scribe,[m] and the Levites who were imparting understanding to the people said to all of them,[n] “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping when they heard the words of the law. 10 He said to them, “Go and eat delicacies and drink sweet drinks and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared. For this day is holy to our Lord.[o] Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

11 Then the Levites quieted all the people saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy. Do not grieve.” 12 So all the people departed to eat and drink and to share their food[p] with others[q] and to enjoy tremendous joy,[r] for they had gained insight in the matters that had been made known to them.

13 On the second day of the month the family leaders[s] met with[t] Ezra the scribe, together with all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to consider the words of the law. 14 They discovered written in the law that the Lord had commanded through[u] Moses that the Israelites should live in temporary shelters during the festival of the seventh month, 15 and that they should make a proclamation and disseminate this message[v] in all their cities and in Jerusalem: “Go to the hill country and bring back olive branches and branches of wild olive trees, myrtle trees, date palms, and other leafy trees to construct temporary shelters, as it is written.”

16 So the people went out and brought these things[w] back and constructed temporary shelters for themselves, each on his roof and in his courtyard and in the courtyards of the temple[x] of God and in the plaza of the Water Gate and the plaza of the Ephraim Gate. 17 So all the assembly which had returned from the exile constructed temporary shelters and lived in them. The Israelites had not done so from the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day. Everyone experienced very great joy.[y] 18 Ezra[z] read in the book of the law of God day by day, from the first day to the last.[aa] They observed the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day they held an assembly[ab] as was required.[ac]

  10. Nehemiah 8:8 tn The exact meaning of the pual participle מְפֹרָשׁ (meforash) in this verse is uncertain. The basic sense of the Hebrew word seems to be “to make distinct.” The word may also have the sense of “to divide in parts,” “to interpret,” or “to translate.” The context of Neh 8:8 does not decisively clarify how the participle is to be understood here. It probably refers to the role of the Levites as those who explained or interpreted the portions of biblical text that had been publicly read on this occasion. A different option, however, is suggested by the translation distincte (“distinctly”) of the Vulgate (cf. KJV, ASV). If the Hebrew word means “distinctly” here, it would imply that the readers paid particular attention to such things as word-grouping and pronunciation so as to be sure that the listeners had every opportunity to understand the message that was being read. Yet another view is found in the Talmud, which understands translation of the Hebrew text into Aramaic to be what is in view here. The following explanation of Neh 8:8 is found in b. Megillah 3a: “‘And they read in the book, in the law of God’: this indicates the [Hebrew] text; ‘with an interpretation’: this indicates the targum; ‘and they gave the sense’: this indicates the verse stops; ‘and caused them to understand the reading’: this indicates the accentuation, or, according to another version, the Masoretic notes.” However, this ancient rabbinic view that the origins of the Targum are found in Neh 8:8 is debatable. It is not clear that the practice of paraphrasing the Hebrew biblical text into Aramaic in order to accommodate the needs of those Jews who were not at home in the Hebrew language developed this early. The translation of מְפֹרָשׁ adopted above (i.e., “explaining it”) understands the word to have in mind an explanatory function (cf. NAB, NCV, TEV, NLT) rather than one of translation.

Ze vroegen aan Ezra om het boek met de wet die de Heer aan Israël had gegeven, te gaan halen. 3 De priester Ezra las de wet voor aan het hele volk, mannen en vrouwen en iedereen die het kon begrijpen. Het was de eerste dag van de zevende maand. 4 Van de vroege ochtend tot de late avond las hij daaruit voor op het plein bij de Waterpoort. Iedereen luisterde aandachtig. 5 De wetgeleerde Ezra stond op een houten verhoging die hier speciaal voor was gemaakt. Rechts van hem stonden Mattitja, Sema, Anaja, Uria, Hilkia en Maäseja. Het Loofhuttenfeest wordt weer gevierd

10 Nehemia (de bestuurder van de provincie), Ezra (de priester en wetgeleerde) en de Levieten die het volk les gaven, zeiden tegen de mensen: "Vandaag vieren we feest voor jullie Heer God. Wees dus niet bedroefd en huil niet." Dat zeiden ze, omdat alle mensen huilden toen ze de wet hoorden. 11 Verder zei Nehemia tegen hen: "Ga thuis een feestmaaltijd klaarmaken. Zorg ervoor dat de mensen die niets hebben, ook een deel krijgen. Vandaag vieren we feest voor de Heer. Wees dus niet verdrietig, want de blijdschap van de Heer zal jullie kracht geven." 12 Ook de Levieten probeerden de mensen weer rustig te krijgen. Ze zeiden tegen hen: "Stil maar, want vandaag vieren we feest voor de Heer. Jullie hoeven niet verdrietig te zijn."

13 Toen ging iedereen naar huis om feest te vieren. De mensen zorgden ervoor dat iedereen te eten en te drinken had. Ze vierden uitbundig feest, want ze hadden begrepen wat er aan hen voorgelezen was.

14 De volgende dag kwamen de familiehoofden van het hele volk, de priesters en de Levieten bij de wetgeleerde Ezra. Met elkaar gingen ze de wet bestuderen. 15 Toen lazen ze daarin dat de Heer tegen Mozes had gezegd dat de Israëlieten op het feest in de zevende maand in hutten van takken met bladeren moesten wonen.[a] 16 Ook stond er in dat ze naar alle steden en Jeruzalem de boodschap moesten sturen: "Ga naar de bergen en haal takken van olijfbomen, wilgen, mirten, palmen en andere bomen met bladeren. Bouw hutten van die takken. Want dat staat in de wet."

17 Toen ging iedereen op pad om takken met bladeren te verzamelen. Daarmee bouwden ze hutten op de daken, op de binnenplaatsen, op de pleinen van de tempel en op de pleinen bij de Waterpoort en de Efraïmpoort. 18 Alle mensen die uit Babel waren teruggekomen, maakten hutten en woonden daar in. Dat hadden de Israëlieten niet gedaan sinds de tijd dat Jozua, de zoon van Nun hen leidde.[b] Iedereen was heel erg blij. 19 Ze vierden zeven dagen feest. Elke dag werd er uit het boek van de wet van God voorgelezen, van de eerste dag tot de laatste dag. Op de achtste dag was er een feestelijke bijeenkomst, zoals het in de wet staat.

De Judeeërs vierden dit feest om te denken aan de tocht van het volk Israël door de woestijn, toen de mensen in tenten woonden. Het was één van de drie grote feesten voor de Heer. Het werd gevierd op de 15e dag van de zevende maand, aan het eind van de oogsttijd. Lees Leviticus 23:33-36.
