8 1 Entonces todo el pueblo, como un solo hombre, se reunió en la plaza que está frente a la puerta del Agua y pidió al maestro Esdras traer el libro de la Ley que el Señor había dado a Israel por medio de Moisés.
2 Así que el día primero del mes séptimo, el sacerdote Esdras llevó la Ley ante la asamblea, que estaba compuesta de hombres y mujeres y de todos los que podían comprender la lectura. 3 Entonces la leyó en presencia de ellos desde el alba hasta el mediodía en la plaza que está frente a la puerta del Agua. Todo el pueblo estaba muy atento a la lectura del libro de la Ley.
4 El maestro Esdras se puso de pie sobre una plataforma de madera construida para la ocasión. A su derecha estaban Matatías, Semá, Anaías, Urías, Jilquías y Maseías; a su izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Jasún, Jasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulán.
5 Esdras, a quien la gente podía ver porque él estaba en un lugar más alto, abrió el libro y todo el pueblo se puso de pie. 6 Entonces Esdras bendijo al Señor, el gran Dios. Y todo el pueblo, levantando las manos, respondió: «¡Amén y amén!». Luego adoraron al Señor, postrándose rostro en tierra.
7 Los levitas Jesúa, Baní, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetay, Hodías, Maseías, Quelitá, Azarías, Jozabad, Janán y Pelaías le explicaban la Ley al pueblo, que no se movía de su sitio. 8 Ellos leían con claridad el libro de la Ley de Dios y lo interpretaban de modo que se comprendiera su lectura.
9 Al oír las palabras de la Ley, la gente comenzó a llorar. Por eso el gobernador Nehemías, el sacerdote y maestro Esdras y los levitas que enseñaban al pueblo dijeron: «No lloren ni se pongan tristes, porque este día ha sido consagrado al Señor su Dios».
10 Luego Nehemías añadió: «Ya pueden irse. Coman bien, tomen bebidas dulces y compartan su comida con quienes no tengan nada, porque este día ha sido consagrado a nuestro Señor. No estén tristes, pues el gozo del Señor es su fortaleza».
11 También los levitas tranquilizaban a todo el pueblo. Les decían: «¡Tranquilos! ¡No estén tristes, que este es un día santo!».
12 Así que todo el pueblo se fue a comer, beber, compartir su comida y a celebrar con gran alegría; porque habían comprendido lo que se les había enseñado.
La fiesta de las Enramadas
13 Al día siguiente, los jefes de familia, junto con los sacerdotes y los levitas, se reunieron con el maestro Esdras para estudiar las palabras de la Ley. 14 Y en esta encontraron escrito que el Señor había mandado a Moisés que durante la fiesta del mes séptimo los israelitas debían habitar en enramadas 15 y pregonar en todas sus ciudades y en Jerusalén esta orden: «Vayan a la montaña y traigan ramas de olivo, de olivo silvestre, de arrayán, de palmera y de todo árbol frondoso, para hacer enramadas, conforme a lo que está escrito».[a]
16 La gente fue, trajo ramas y con ellas hizo enramadas en las azoteas, en los patios, en el atrio del Templo de Dios, en la plaza de la puerta del Agua y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraín. 17 Toda la asamblea de los que habían regresado del cautiverio hizo enramadas y habitó en ellas. Como los israelitas no habían hecho esto desde los días de Josué, hijo de Nun, hubo gran alegría.
18 Todos los días, desde el primero hasta el último, se leyó el libro de la Ley de Dios. Celebraron la fiesta durante siete días y en el día octavo hubo una asamblea, según lo ordenado.

8 1 Entonces todo el pueblo en masa se reunió en la plaza que está frente a la puerta del Agua, y le dijeron al maestro Esdras que trajera el libro de la ley de Moisés, que el Señor había dado a Israel. 2 El día primero del mes séptimo, el sacerdote Esdras trajo el libro de la ley ante la reunión compuesta de hombres, mujeres y todos los que tenían uso de razón; 3 y desde la mañana hasta el mediodía lo leyó en presencia de todos ellos, delante de la plaza que está frente a la puerta del Agua.
Todo el pueblo estaba atento a la lectura del libro de la ley. 4 El maestro Esdras estaba de pie sobre una tribuna de madera construida para ese fin. También de pie y a su derecha estaban Matatías, Sema, Anías, Urías, Hilquías y Maaseías. A su izquierda estaban Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulam. 5 Entonces Esdras abrió el libro a la vista de todo el pueblo, ya que se le podía ver por encima de todos; y al abrirlo, todo el mundo se puso de pie. 6 Entonces Esdras alabó al Señor, el Dios todopoderoso, y todo el pueblo, con los brazos en alto, respondió: «Amén, amén.» Luego se inclinaron hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, y adoraron al Señor.
7 Los levitas Josué, Baní, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabtai, Hodías, Maaseías, Quelitá, Azarías, Jozabad, Hanán y Pelaías explicaban la ley al pueblo. Mientras la gente permanecía en su sitio, 8 ellos leían en voz alta el libro de la ley de Dios, y lo traducían para que se entendiera claramente la lectura. 9 Y como todo el pueblo lloraba al oír los términos de la ley, tanto el gobernador Nehemías como el maestro y sacerdote Esdras, y los levitas que explicaban la ley al pueblo, dijeron a todos que no se pusieran tristes ni lloraran, porque aquel día estaba dedicado al Señor, su Dios. 10 Además les dijo Esdras: «Vayan y coman de lo mejor, beban vino dulce e inviten a quienes no tengan nada preparado, porque hoy es un día dedicado a nuestro Señor. No estén tristes, porque la alegría del Señor es nuestro refugio.»
11 También los levitas calmaban a la gente, diciéndoles que se callaran y no lloraran, porque era un día dedicado al Señor. 12 Entonces toda la gente se fue a comer y beber, y a compartir su comida y celebrar una gran fiesta, porque habían comprendido lo que se les había enseñado.
Celebración de la fiesta de las Enramadas
13 Al día siguiente, todos los jefes de familia y los sacerdotes y los levitas se reunieron con el maestro Esdras para estudiar los términos de la ley, 14 y encontraron escrito en ella que el Señor había ordenado por medio de Moisés que, durante la fiesta religiosa del mes séptimo, los israelitas debían vivir debajo de enramadas. 15 Entonces, por todas las ciudades y en Jerusalén, se hizo correr la voz de que la gente saliera a los montes a buscar ramas de olivo, arrayán, palmera o cualquier otro árbol frondoso para hacer las enramadas, conforme a lo que estaba escrito en la ley. 16 Y la gente salió y volvió con ramas para hacer sus propias enramadas en las azoteas y en los patios, como también en el atrio del templo de Dios, en la plaza de la puerta del Agua y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraín. 17 Toda la comunidad que volvió del destierro hizo enramadas y se instaló debajo de ellas, pues desde el tiempo de Josué, hijo de Nun, hasta aquel día no se había hecho tal cosa. Y hubo una gran alegría. 18 Celebraron la fiesta religiosa durante siete días; y desde el primer día hasta el último, Esdras leía diariamente pasajes del libro de la ley de Dios; y en el día octavo hubo una reunión solemne, conforme a la costumbre establecida.

8 1 all the people gathered together(A) at the square in front of the Water Gate.(B) They asked Ezra the scribe(C) to bring the book of the law of Moses(D) that the Lord had given Israel. 2 On the first day of the seventh month,(E) Ezra the priest(F) brought the law(G) before the assembly of men, women, and all who could listen with understanding. 3 While he was facing the square in front of the Water Gate,(H) he read out of it from daybreak until noon before the men, the women, and those who could understand. All the people listened attentively[a] to the book of the law.(I) 4 Ezra the scribe stood on a high wooden platform(J) made for this purpose. Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah stood beside him on his right; to his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hash-baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 Ezra opened the book in full view of all the people, since he was elevated above everyone. As he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God, and with their hands uplifted(K) all the people said, “Amen, Amen!”(L) Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.(M)
7 Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah,(N) who were Levites,[b](O) explained the law(P) to the people as they stood in their places. 8 They read out of the book of the law of God, translating and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was read. 9 Nehemiah the governor,(Q) Ezra the priest and scribe,(R) and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all of them, “This day(S) is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.”(T) For all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared,(U) since today(V) is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, because the joy of the Lord is your stronghold.”(W) 11 And the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Be still,(X) since today(Y) is holy. Do not grieve.” 12 Then all the people began to eat and drink, send portions, and have a great celebration,(Z) because they had understood the words that were explained to them.
Festival of Booths Observed
13 On the second day, the family leaders of all the people, along with the priests and Levites,(AA) assembled before Ezra the scribe(AB) to study the words of the law. 14 They found written in the law how the Lord had commanded through Moses that the Israelites should dwell in booths during the festival of the seventh month.(AC) 15 So they proclaimed and spread this news throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the hill country and bring back branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, just as it is written.”(AD) 16 The people went out, brought back branches, and made booths for themselves on each of their rooftops,(AE) and courtyards, the court of the house of God, the square by the Water Gate,(AF) and the square by the Gate of Ephraim.(AG) 17 The whole community that had returned from exile(AH) made booths and lived in them. They had not celebrated like this from the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day.(AI) And there was tremendous joy.(AJ) 18 Ezra[c] read out of the book of the law of God(AK) every day, from the first day to the last. The Israelites celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day there was an assembly, according to the ordinance.(AL)

8 1 all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate.(A) They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses,(B) which the Lord had commanded for Israel.
2 So on the first day of the seventh month(C) Ezra the priest brought the Law(D) before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate(E) in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
4 Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform(F) built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing(G) above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands(H) and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7 The Levites(I)—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed(J) the people in the Law while the people were standing there. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear[a] and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.
9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites(K) who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.”(L) For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing(M) prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy(N) of the Lord is your strength.”
11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”
12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy,(O) because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.
13 On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law. 14 They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters(P) during the festival of the seventh month 15 and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.[b]
16 So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate(Q) and the one by the Gate of Ephraim.(R) 17 The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them.(S) From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated(T) it like this. And their joy was very great.
18 Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read(U) from the Book of the Law(V) of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation,(W) there was an assembly.(X)
