Nehemías 8

8 Entonces se juntó todo el pueblo como un solo hombre en la plaza que está delante de la puerta de las Aguas, y dijeron a Esdras el escriba que trajese el libro de la ley de Moisés, la cual Jehová había dado a Israel.

2 Y el sacerdote Esdras trajo la ley delante de la congregación, así de hombres como de mujeres y de todos los que podían entender, el primer día del mes séptimo.

3 Y leyó del libro en la plaza que está delante de la puerta de las Aguas, desde el alba hasta el mediodía, en presencia de hombres y mujeres y de todos los que podían entender; y los oídos de todo el pueblo estaban atentos al libro de la ley.

4 Y el escriba Esdras estaba sobre un púlpito de madera que habían hecho para ello, y junto a él estaban Matitías, Sema, Anaías, Urías, Hilcías y Maasías a su mano derecha; y a su mano izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Hasum, Hasbadaná, Zacarías y Mesulam.

5 Abrió, pues, Esdras el libro a ojos de todo el pueblo, porque estaba más alto que todo el pueblo; y cuando lo abrió, todo el pueblo se puso en pie.

6 Bendijo entonces Esdras a Jehová, Dios grande. Y todo el pueblo respondió: ¡Amén! ¡Amén!, alzando sus manos; y se humillaron y adoraron a Jehová inclinados a tierra.

7 Y los levitas Jesúa, Baní, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetay, Hodiyías, Maasías, Kelitá, Azarías, Jozabad, Hanán y Pelaías, hacían entender al pueblo la ley; y el pueblo estaba atento en su lugar.

8 Y leían en el libro de la ley de Dios claramente, y ponían el sentido, de modo que entendiesen la lectura.

9 Y Nehemías el gobernador, y el sacerdote Esdras, escriba, y los levitas que hacían entender al pueblo, dijeron a todo el pueblo: Día santo es a Jehová nuestro Dios; no os entristezcáis, ni lloréis; porque todo el pueblo lloraba oyendo las palabras de la ley.

10 Luego les dijo: Id, comed manjares grasos, y bebed vino dulce, y enviad porciones a los que no tienen nada preparado; porque día santo es a nuestro Señor; no os entristezcáis, porque el gozo de Jehová es vuestra fuerza.

11 Los levitas, pues, hacían callar a todo el pueblo, diciendo: Callad, porque es día santo, y no os entristezcáis.

12 Y todo el pueblo se fue a comer y a beber, y a obsequiar con porciones, y a gozar de gran alegría, porque habían entendido las palabras que les habían enseñado.

13 Al día siguiente se reunieron los cabezas de las familias de todo el pueblo, sacerdotes y levitas, en torno a Esdras el escriba, para entender las palabras de la ley.

14 Y hallaron escrito en la ley que Jehová había mandado por mano de Moisés, que habitasen los hijos de Israel en tabernáculos en la fiesta solemne del mes séptimo;

15 y que publicasen y pregonasen por todas sus ciudades y por Jerusalén, diciendo: Salid al monte, y traed ramas de olivo, de olivo silvestre, de arrayán, de palmeras y de todo árbol frondoso, para hacer tabernáculos, como está escrito.

16 Salió, pues, el pueblo, y trajeron ramas e hicieron tabernáculos, cada uno sobre su terrado, en sus patios, en los patios de la casa de Dios, en la plaza de la puerta de las Aguas, y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraín.

17 Y toda la congregación que volvió de la cautividad hizo tabernáculos, y en tabernáculos habitó; porque desde los días de Josué, hijo de Nun, hasta aquel día, no habían hecho cosa parecida los hijos de Israel. Y hubo alegría muy grande.

18 Y leyó Esdras en el libro de la ley de Dios cada día, desde el primer día hasta el último; e hicieron la fiesta solemne por siete días, y el octavo día fue de solemne asamblea, según el rito.

8 1 Entonces todo el pueblo, como un solo hombre, se reunió en la plaza que está frente a la puerta del Agua y pidió al maestro Esdras traer el libro de la Ley que el Señor había dado a Israel por medio de Moisés.

2 Así que el día primero del mes séptimo, el sacerdote Esdras llevó la Ley ante la asamblea, que estaba compuesta de hombres y mujeres y de todos los que podían comprender la lectura. 3 Entonces la leyó en presencia de ellos desde el alba hasta el mediodía en la plaza que está frente a la puerta del Agua. Todo el pueblo estaba muy atento a la lectura del libro de la Ley.

4 El maestro Esdras se puso de pie sobre una plataforma de madera construida para la ocasión. A su derecha estaban Matatías, Semá, Anaías, Urías, Jilquías y Maseías; a su izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Jasún, Jasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulán.

5 Esdras, a quien la gente podía ver porque él estaba en un lugar más alto, abrió el libro y todo el pueblo se puso de pie. 6 Entonces Esdras bendijo al Señor, el gran Dios. Y todo el pueblo, levantando las manos, respondió: «¡Amén y amén!». Luego adoraron al Señor, postrándose rostro en tierra.

7 Los levitas Jesúa, Baní, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetay, Hodías, Maseías, Quelitá, Azarías, Jozabad, Janán y Pelaías le explicaban la Ley al pueblo, que no se movía de su sitio. 8 Ellos leían con claridad el libro de la Ley de Dios y lo interpretaban de modo que se comprendiera su lectura.

9 Al oír las palabras de la Ley, la gente comenzó a llorar. Por eso el gobernador Nehemías, el sacerdote y maestro Esdras y los levitas que enseñaban al pueblo dijeron: «No lloren ni se pongan tristes, porque este día ha sido consagrado al Señor su Dios».

10 Luego Nehemías añadió: «Ya pueden irse. Coman bien, tomen bebidas dulces y compartan su comida con quienes no tengan nada, porque este día ha sido consagrado a nuestro Señor. No estén tristes, pues el gozo del Señor es su fortaleza».

11 También los levitas tranquilizaban a todo el pueblo. Les decían: «¡Tranquilos! ¡No estén tristes, que este es un día santo!».

12 Así que todo el pueblo se fue a comer, beber, compartir su comida y a celebrar con gran alegría; porque habían comprendido lo que se les había enseñado.

La fiesta de las Enramadas

13 Al día siguiente, los jefes de familia, junto con los sacerdotes y los levitas, se reunieron con el maestro Esdras para estudiar las palabras de la Ley. 14 Y en esta encontraron escrito que el Señor había mandado a Moisés que durante la fiesta del mes séptimo los israelitas debían habitar en enramadas 15 y pregonar en todas sus ciudades y en Jerusalén esta orden: «Vayan a la montaña y traigan ramas de olivo, de olivo silvestre, de arrayán, de palmera y de todo árbol frondoso, para hacer enramadas, conforme a lo que está escrito».[a]

16 La gente fue, trajo ramas y con ellas hizo enramadas en las azoteas, en los patios, en el atrio del Templo de Dios, en la plaza de la puerta del Agua y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraín. 17 Toda la asamblea de los que habían regresado del cautiverio hizo enramadas y habitó en ellas. Como los israelitas no habían hecho esto desde los días de Josué, hijo de Nun, hubo gran alegría.

18 Todos los días, desde el primero hasta el último, se leyó el libro de la Ley de Dios. Celebraron la fiesta durante siete días y en el día octavo hubo una asamblea, según lo ordenado.

8 1 all the people gathered together[a] in the plaza which was in front of the Water Gate. They asked[b] Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the Lord had commanded Israel. 2 So Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly which included men and women and all those able to understand what they heard. (This happened on the first day of the seventh month.) 3 So he read it before the plaza in front of the Water Gate from dawn till noon[c] before the men and women and those children who could understand.[d] All the people were eager to hear[e] the book of the law.

4 Ezra the scribe stood on a towering wooden platform[f] constructed for this purpose. Standing near him on his right were Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Masseiah. On his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 Ezra opened the book in plain view[g] of all the people, for he was elevated above all the people. When he opened the book,[h] all the people stood up. 6 Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people replied “Amen! Amen!” as they lifted their hands. Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

7 Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—all of whom were Levites[i]—were teaching the people the law, as the people remained standing. 8 They read from the book of God’s law, explaining it[j] and imparting insight. Thus the people[k] gained understanding from what was read.

9 Then Nehemiah the governor,[l] Ezra the priestly scribe,[m] and the Levites who were imparting understanding to the people said to all of them,[n] “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping when they heard the words of the law. 10 He said to them, “Go and eat delicacies and drink sweet drinks and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared. For this day is holy to our Lord.[o] Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

11 Then the Levites quieted all the people saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy. Do not grieve.” 12 So all the people departed to eat and drink and to share their food[p] with others[q] and to enjoy tremendous joy,[r] for they had gained insight in the matters that had been made known to them.

13 On the second day of the month the family leaders[s] met with[t] Ezra the scribe, together with all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to consider the words of the law. 14 They discovered written in the law that the Lord had commanded through[u] Moses that the Israelites should live in temporary shelters during the festival of the seventh month, 15 and that they should make a proclamation and disseminate this message[v] in all their cities and in Jerusalem: “Go to the hill country and bring back olive branches and branches of wild olive trees, myrtle trees, date palms, and other leafy trees to construct temporary shelters, as it is written.”

16 So the people went out and brought these things[w] back and constructed temporary shelters for themselves, each on his roof and in his courtyard and in the courtyards of the temple[x] of God and in the plaza of the Water Gate and the plaza of the Ephraim Gate. 17 So all the assembly which had returned from the exile constructed temporary shelters and lived in them. The Israelites had not done so from the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day. Everyone experienced very great joy.[y] 18 Ezra[z] read in the book of the law of God day by day, from the first day to the last.[aa] They observed the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day they held an assembly[ab] as was required.[ac]

The basic sense of the Hebrew word seems to be “to make distinct.” The word may also have the sense of “to divide in parts,” “to interpret,” or “to translate.” The context of Neh 8:8 does not decisively clarify how the participle is to be understood here. It probably refers to the role of the Levites as those who explained or interpreted the portions of biblical text that had been publicly read on this occasion. A different option, however, is suggested by the translation distincte (“distinctly”) of the Vulgate (cf. KJV, ASV). If the Hebrew word means “distinctly” here, it would imply that the readers paid particular attention to such things as word-grouping and pronunciation so as to be sure that the listeners had every opportunity to understand the message that was being read. Yet another view is found in the Talmud, which understands translation of the Hebrew text into Aramaic to be what is in view here. The following explanation of Neh 8:8 is found in b. Megillah 3a: “‘And they read in the book, in the law of God’: this indicates the [Hebrew] text; ‘with an interpretation’: this indicates the targum; ‘and they gave the sense’: this indicates the verse stops; ‘and caused them to understand the reading’: this indicates the accentuation, or, according to another version, the Masoretic notes.” However, this ancient rabbinic view that the origins of the Targum are found in Neh 8:8 is debatable. It is not clear that the practice of paraphrasing the Hebrew biblical text into Aramaic in order to accommodate the needs of those Jews who were not at home in the Hebrew language developed this early. The translation of מְפֹרָשׁ adopted above (i.e., “explaining it”) understands the word to have in mind an explanatory function (cf. NAB, NCV, TEV, NLT) rather than one of translation.
