Nehemías ora en favor de su pueblo
1 Ésta es la historia de Nehemías, hijo de Hacalías. En el año veinte del reinado de Artajerjes, en el mes de Quisleu, yo, Nehemías, estaba en la ciudadela de Susa 2 cuando llegó mi hermano Hananí con unos hombres que venían de Judá. Entonces les pregunté por Jerusalén y por los judíos que habían escapado de ir al destierro. 3 Y me contestaron: «Los que escaparon de ir al destierro y se quedaron en la provincia, están en una situación muy difícil y vergonzosa. En cuanto a Jerusalén, la muralla ha sido derribada y sus puertas han sido destruidas por el fuego.»
4 Al escuchar estas noticias, me senté a llorar, y por algunos días estuve muy triste, ayunando y orando ante el Dios del cielo. 5 Y le dije: «Señor, Dios del cielo, Dios grande y terrible, que mantienes firme tu alianza y tu fidelidad con los que te aman y cumplen tus mandamientos; 6 te ruego ahora que atiendas a la oración que día y noche te dirijo en favor de tus siervos, los israelitas. Reconozco que nosotros los israelitas hemos pecado contra ti; ¡hasta mis familiares y yo hemos pecado! 7 Nos hemos conducido de la peor manera ante ti; no hemos cumplido los mandamientos, leyes y decretos que nos diste por medio de tu siervo Moisés. 8 Recuerda que le advertiste que si nosotros pecábamos, nos dispersarías por todo el mundo; 9 pero que si nos volvíamos a ti y cumplíamos tus mandamientos, poniéndolos en práctica, aun cuando fuéramos esparcidos hasta el último rincón del mundo nos recogerías de allí y nos llevarías de nuevo al santo lugar que escogiste como residencia de tu nombre.
10 »Nosotros somos tus siervos y tu pueblo, que rescataste con tu gran poder y fortaleza. 11 Te ruego, pues, Señor, que atiendas a mi oración y las súplicas de tus siervos, cuyo único deseo es honrarte. Te pido también que me des éxito y despiertes hacia mí las simpatías del rey.»
Artajerjes permite a Nehemías ir a Jerusalén
Yo era entonces copero del rey Artajerjes.

Nehemías ora por su pueblo
1 Estas son las palabras de Nehemías, hijo de Jacalías:
En el mes de quisleu del año veinte, estando yo en la ciudad de Susa, 2 llegó Jananí, uno de mis hermanos, junto con algunos hombres de Judá. Entonces pregunté por el resto de los judíos que se habían librado del destierro y por Jerusalén.
3 Ellos me respondieron: «Los que se libraron del destierro y se quedaron en la provincia están enfrentando una gran calamidad y humillación. La muralla de Jerusalén sigue derribada, con sus puertas consumidas por el fuego».
4 Al escuchar esto, me senté a llorar; hice duelo por algunos días, ayuné y oré al Dios del cielo. 5 Le dije:
«Señor, Dios del cielo, grande y temible, que cumples el pacto y eres fiel con los que te aman y obedecen tus mandamientos, 6 te suplico que me prestes atención, que fijes tus ojos en este siervo tuyo que día y noche ora en favor de tu pueblo Israel. Confieso que los israelitas, entre los cuales estamos incluidos mi familia y yo, hemos pecado contra ti. 7 Te hemos ofendido y nos hemos corrompido mucho; hemos desobedecido los mandamientos, estatutos y leyes que tú mismo diste a tu siervo Moisés.
8 »Recuerda, te suplico, lo que dijiste a tu siervo Moisés: “Si ustedes son infieles, yo los dispersaré entre las naciones; 9 pero si se vuelven a mí, obedecen y ponen en práctica mis mandamientos, aunque hayan sido llevados al lugar más apartado del mundo, los recogeré y los haré volver al lugar que escoja como residencia de mi Nombre”.
10 »Ellos son tus siervos y tu pueblo al cual redimiste con gran despliegue de fuerza y poder. 11 Señor, te suplico que escuches nuestra oración, pues somos tus siervos y nos complacemos en honrar tu nombre. Y te pido que a este siervo tuyo le concedas tener éxito y ganarse el favor de este hombre».
En aquel tiempo yo era copero del rey.

1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,
2 That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
5 And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:
6 Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.
7 We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.
8 Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:
9 But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
10 Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.
11 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.

Nehemiah’s Prayer
1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:
In the month of Kislev(A) in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,(B) 2 Hanani,(C) one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant(D) that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.(E)”
4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.(F) For some days I mourned and fasted(G) and prayed before the God of heaven. 5 Then I said:
“Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God,(H) who keeps his covenant of love(I) with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear(J) the prayer(K) your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess(L) the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. 7 We have acted very wickedly(M) toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
8 “Remember(N) the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter(O) you among the nations, 9 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather(P) them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’(Q)
10 “They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.(R) 11 Lord, let your ear be attentive(S) to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor(T) in the presence of this man.”
I was cupbearer(U) to the king.
