³ They all ate the same spiritual food^{(A) 4} and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock^(B) that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

⁸ See, I have given you this land^(A).^(B) Go in and take possession of the land the Lord swore^(C) he would give to your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—and to their descendants after them.”

⁶ I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.^(A) Strike^(B) the rock, and water^(C) will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

¹⁴ When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost^(A) on the ground appeared on the desert floor. ¹⁵ When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know^(B) what it was.

Moses said to them, “It is the bread^(C) the Lord has given you to eat.

⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven^(A) for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test^(B) them and see whether they will follow my instructions.

³¹ Our ancestors ate the manna^(A) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’^[a]”^(B)

³² Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. ³³ For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven^(C) and gives life to the world.”

³⁴ “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”^(D)

³⁵ Then Jesus declared, “I am^(E) the bread of life.^(F) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes^(G) in me will never be thirsty.^(H)

¹⁵ Also with uplifted hand I swore^(A) to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands^(B)—
