^18 (A)Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster^[a] on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

²¹ Thus says the Lord: Take care for the sake of your lives, and ^(A)do not bear a burden on the Sabbath day or bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem. ²² And do not carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath ^(B)or do any work, but ^(C)keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers. ²³ Yet ^(D)they did not listen or incline their ear, ^(E)but stiffened their neck, that they ^(F)might not hear and receive instruction.

^4 (A)Do not be like your fathers, ^(B)to whom the former prophets cried out, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, ^(C)Return from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.’ But ^(D)they did not hear or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. ⁵ Your fathers, where are they? And ^(E)the prophets, do they live forever? ^6 (F)But my words and my statutes, which I commanded ^(G)my servants the prophets, did they not ^(H)overtake your fathers? So they repented and said, ^(I)‘As the Lord of hosts purposed to deal with us for ^(J)our ways and ^(K)deeds, so has he dealt with us.’”

^26 (A)They shall also strip you of your clothes and take away your beautiful jewels.

⁸ She did not give up her whoring ^(A)that she had begun in Egypt; for in her youth men had lain with her and handled her virgin bosom and poured out their whoring lust upon her.

⁹ Have you forgotten the evil of your fathers, ^(A)the evil of the kings of Judah, ^(B)the evil of their^[a] wives, your own evil, ^(C)and the evil of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

²⁷ But if you do not listen to me, to ^(A)keep the Sabbath day holy, ^(B)and not to bear a burden and enter by the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will ^(C)kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall ^(D)devour the palaces of Jerusalem and ^(E)shall not be quenched.’”

¹³ And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for ^(A)our great guilt, seeing that you, our ^(B)God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved and have given us such a ^(C)remnant as this, ¹⁴ shall we break your commandments again and ^(D)intermarry with the peoples who practice these abominations? Would you not be angry with us ^(E)until you consumed us, so that there should be no ^(F)remnant, nor any to escape? ¹⁵ O Lord, the God of Israel, you are just, for we are left a ^(G)remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our ^(H)guilt, ^(I)for none can stand before you because of this.”

¹⁷ Have we not had enough of ^(A)the sin at Peor from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the Lord, ¹⁸ that you too must turn away this day from following the Lord? And if ^(B)you too rebel against the Lord today then tomorrow ^(C)he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
