Ezra citeşte Legea înaintea poporului
8 Tot poporul s-a strâns ca un singur om în piaţeta din faţa Porţii Apelor. Ei i-au spus cărturarului[a] Ezra să aducă Cartea Legii lui Moise, pe care Domnul o poruncise lui Israel. 2 Preotul Ezra a adus Legea înaintea adunării alcătuite din bărbaţi, femei şi din toţi cei care erau în stare să o înţeleagă. Era ziua întâi a lunii a şaptea. 3 Ezra a citit din Lege în piaţeta dinaintea Porţii Apelor, de la răsăritul soarelui până la amiază, în prezenţa tuturor bărbaţilor, femeilor şi a celor ce puteau să o înţeleagă. Tot poporul asculta cu atenţie la citirea Cărţii Legii. 4 Cărturarul Ezra stătea pe o estradă din lemn construită cu acest prilej. Lângă el, la dreapta lui, stăteau Matitia, Şema, Anaia, Uria, Hilchia şi Maaseia, iar la stânga lui – Pedaia, Mişael, Malchia, Haşum, Haşbadana, Zaharia şi Meşulam.
5 Ezra a deschis Cartea în văzul întregului popor, căci era aşezat mai sus decât poporul. Când a deschis Cartea, tot poporul s-a ridicat în picioare. 6 Ezra L-a binecuvântat pe Domnul, Dumnezeul cel Mare, şi întreg poporul, ridicând mâinile, a răspuns: „Amin! Amin!“ Apoi s-au plecat şi s-au închinat Domnului cu faţa la pământ. 7 Iosua, Bani, Şerebia, Iamin, Akub, Şabtai, Hodia, Maaseia, Chelita, Azaria, Iozabad, Hanan, Pelaia şi leviţii ajutau poporul să înţeleagă Legea, iar poporul stătea în picioare. 8 Ei citeau desluşit din Cartea Legii lui Dumnezeu şi-i arătau înţelesul[b], astfel încât poporul să înţeleagă cele citite.
9 Guvernatorul Neemia, preotul şi cărturarul Ezra, precum şi leviţii care învăţau poporul au zis întregului popor: „Această zi este sfântă pentru Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru. Nu bociţi şi nu plângeţi!“ Căci tot poporul începuse să plângă la auzirea cuvintelor Legii. 10 Ei le-au mai zis: „Duceţi-vă şi mâncaţi mâncăruri alese, beţi băuturi dulci şi trimiteţi câte ceva şi celor ce n-au nimic pregătit, căci este o zi sfântă pentru Stăpânul nostru. Nu vă mâhniţi, căci bucuria Domnului este tăria voastră!“ 11 Leviţii domoleau poporul, zicându-le: „Linişte, căci aceasta este o zi sfântă! Nu vă mâhniţi!“ 12 Tot poporul s-a dus apoi să mănânce, să bea şi să trimită câte ceva şi altora. Au făcut aceasta cu mare bucurie, căci înţeleseseră cuvintele care le fuseseră explicate.
Celebrarea Sărbătorii Corturilor
13 A doua zi căpeteniile familiilor întregului popor, preoţii şi leviţii au fost convocaţi la cărturarul Ezra ca să li se explice cuvintele Legii. 14 Au găsit scris în Legea poruncită de Domnul prin Moise că israeliţii trebuie să locuiască în corturi în timpul sărbătorii din luna a şaptea. 15 Totodată au înţeles că trebuie să proclame şi să răspândească în toate cetăţile lor şi în Ierusalim următoarea veste: „Duceţi-vă la munte şi aduceţi ramuri de măslin, ramuri de măslin sălbatic, ramuri de mirt, ramuri de palmier şi ramuri de alţi copaci stufoşi, ca să faceţi corturi, după cum este scris.“[c]
16 Poporul a ieşit, a adunat ramuri şi şi-a făcut corturi, fiecare pe acoperişul casei lui, în curtea lui sau în curţile Casei lui Dumnezeu, în piaţeta de la Poarta Apelor şi în piaţeta de la Poarta Efraim. 17 Toată mulţimea întoarsă din captivitate şi-a făcut corturi şi a locuit în ele. Israeliţii nu mai făcuseră aşa ceva de pe vremea lui Iosua, fiul lui Nun. Şi a fost o bucurie nespus de mare. 18 Au citit din Cartea Legii lui Dumnezeu în fiecare zi, din prima zi până în ultima zi. Au ţinut sărbătoarea timp de şapte zile, iar în ziua a opta au avut o adunare sfântă, aşa cum era rânduit.

8 1 all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate.(A) They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses,(B) which the Lord had commanded for Israel.
2 So on the first day of the seventh month(C) Ezra the priest brought the Law(D) before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate(E) in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
4 Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform(F) built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing(G) above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands(H) and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7 The Levites(I)—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed(J) the people in the Law while the people were standing there. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear[a] and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.
9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites(K) who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.”(L) For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing(M) prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy(N) of the Lord is your strength.”
11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”
12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy,(O) because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.
13 On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law. 14 They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters(P) during the festival of the seventh month 15 and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.[b]
16 So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate(Q) and the one by the Gate of Ephraim.(R) 17 The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them.(S) From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated(T) it like this. And their joy was very great.
18 Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read(U) from the Book of the Law(V) of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation,(W) there was an assembly.(X)
