Nehemiah’s Prayer
1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah:
In the month of Kislev(A) in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,(B) 2 Hanani,(C) one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant(D) that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.(E)”
4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.(F) For some days I mourned and fasted(G) and prayed before the God of heaven. 5 Then I said:
“Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God,(H) who keeps his covenant of love(I) with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear(J) the prayer(K) your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess(L) the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. 7 We have acted very wickedly(M) toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
8 “Remember(N) the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter(O) you among the nations, 9 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather(P) them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’(Q)
10 “They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.(R) 11 Lord, let your ear be attentive(S) to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor(T) in the presence of this man.”
I was cupbearer(U) to the king.

1 Sử liệu[a] về Nê-hê-mi, con Ha-ca-lia.
Vào tháng Kít-lêu[b] năm thứ hai mươi, khi tôi đang ở tại thành nội Su-san, 2 có một trong các anh em tôi tên Ha-na-ni cùng vài người từ Giu-đa đến. Tôi hỏi thăm họ về những người Do-thái còn sống sót, tức những người đã thoát khỏi cảnh phu tù, và về thành Giê-ru-sa-lem. 3 Họ nói với tôi: “Những người còn sống sót tại đây, trong tỉnh, tức những người đã thoát khỏi cảnh phu tù, hiện lâm vào tình thế rất bi đát và nhục nhã. Còn tường thành Giê-ru-sa-lem thì đổ nát, cổng thành bị lửa thiêu trụi.” 4 Khi nghe những lời ấy, tôi ngồi mọp xuống đất,[c] khóc than[d] nhiều ngày. Tôi tiếp tục kiêng ăn và cầu nguyện Đức Chúa Trời trên trời.

5 Tôi thưa: “Ôi! Lạy CHÚA, Ngài là Đức Chúa Trời trên trời, Đức Chúa Trời vĩ đại và uy nghi, là Đấng giữ giao ước và tình yêu trung kiên với người nào kính mến và tuân hành điều răn Ngài!
6 Cầu xin Ngài lắng tai và cầu xin Ngài mở mắt ra nghe lời cầu nguyện của con, là tôi tớ Ngài. Con xưng nhận những tội mà chúng con là dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã phạm cùng Ngài. Thật vậy, chính con và tổ phụ con có phạm tội cùng Ngài. 7 Chúng con cư xử với Ngài thật tồi tệ, chúng con không tuân hành điều răn, quy luật, và phán quyết mà Ngài truyền cho Môi-se, tôi tớ Ngài. 8 Cầu xin Chúa nhớ lại lời Ngài phán dạy qua Môi-se tôi tớ Ngài: ‘Nếu các ngươi bất trung, Ta sẽ phân tán các ngươi giữa các dân; 9 nhưng nếu các ngươi quay về cùng Ta, giữ gìn và tuân hành điều răn Ta, dù cho các ngươi có bị tản mác ở tận các phương trời, từ nơi đó Ta sẽ gom các ngươi lại, và đem các ngươi về nơi Ta đã chọn cho danh Ta ngự tại đó.’ 10 Tổ phụ chúng con[e] là tôi tớ và dân của Ngài; mà Ngài đã giải cứu bằng quyền năng vĩ đại và bàn tay mạnh mẽ của Ngài. 11 Ôi! Lạy Chúa! Cầu xin Ngài lắng tai nghe lời cầu nguyện của con là tôi tớ Ngài, và lời cầu nguyện của các tôi tớ khác của Ngài, là những người vui lòng kính sợ danh Ngài. Cầu xin Chúa cho con là tôi tớ Ngài được toại nguyện hôm nay, cầu xin Chúa đoái thương con trong khi con tiếp xúc với người này.”
Lúc ấy tôi là người dâng rượu cho vua.
