Are you better[a] than Thebes?[b] She was located on the banks of the Nile. The waters surrounded her. Her strength was the sea, and her walls were the water. Cush and Egypt had limitless strength. Put and the Libyans were among her allies. 10 Yet even she went into exile. Even her infants were smashed to pieces on every street corner. They cast lots to win her dignitaries. All her great men were bound with chains.

11 You too will be drunk and will hide yourself. You too will seek refuge from the enemy.

Are you better than Thebes?[a]
    She who sits at the Nile, surrounded by her waters,
her rampart was the sea and water was her wall.
Cush was her strength, Egypt without end;

    her children were dashed to pieces at the head of the streets;
they cast lots for all of her nobles;
    all of her dignitaries were bound with chains.
11 You also will behave like a drunkard;
    You also will hide yourself;
        You also will seek refuge from the enemy.
