Woe to thee, O city of blood, all full of lies and violence: rapine shall not depart from thee.

The noise of the whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the neighing horse, and of the running chariot, and of the horsemen coming up,

And of the shining sword, and of the glittering spear, and of a multitude slain, and of a grievous destruction: and there is no end of carcasses, and they shall fall down on their dead bodies.

Because of the multitude of the fornications of the harlot that was beautiful and agreeable, and that made use of witchcraft, that sold nations through her fornications, and families through her witchcrafts.

Behold I come against thee, saith the Lord of hosts: and I will discover thy shame to thy face, and will shew thy nakedness to the nations, and thy shame to kingdoms.

And I will cast abominations upon thee, and will disgrace thee, and will make an example of thee.

And it shall come to pass that every one that shall see thee, shall flee from thee, and shall say: Ninive is laid waste: who shall bemoan thee? whence shall I seek a comforter for thee?

Art thou better than the populous Alexandria, that dwelleth among the rivers? waters are round about it: the sea is its riches, the waters are its walls.

Ethiopia and Egypt were the strength thereof, and there is no end: Africa and the Libyans were thy helpers.

10 Yet she also was removed and carried into captivity: her young children were dashed in pieces at the top of every street, and they cast lots upon her nobles, and all her great men were bound in fetters.

11 Therefore thou also shalt be made drunk, and shalt be despised: and thou shalt seek help from the enemy.

12 All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with their green figs: if they be shaken, they shall fall into the mouth of the eater.

13 Behold thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open to thy enemies, the fire shall devour thy bars.

14 Draw thee water for the siege, build up thy bulwarks: go into the clay, and tread, work it and make brick.

15 There shall the fire devour thee: thou shalt perish by the sword, it shall devour thee like the bruchus: assemble together like the bruchus, make thyself many like the locust.

16 Thou hast multiplied thy merchandises above the stars of heaven: the bruchus hath spread himself and flown away.

17 Thy guards are like the locusts: and thy little ones like the locusts of locusts which swarm on the hedges in the day of cold: the sun arose, and they flew away, and their place was not known where they were.

18 Thy shepherds have slumbered, O king of Assyria, thy princes shall be buried: thy people are hid in the mountains, and there is none to gather them together.

19 Thy destruction is not hidden, thy wound is grievous: all that have heard the fame of thee, have clapped their hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

The Woe of Nineveh

Woe to the (A)bloody city!
It is all full of lies and robbery.
Its [a]victim never departs.
The noise of a whip
And the noise of rattling wheels,
Of galloping horses,
Of [b]clattering chariots!
Horsemen charge with bright sword and glittering spear.
There is a multitude of slain,
A great number of bodies,
Countless corpses—
They stumble over the corpses—
Because of the multitude of [c]harlotries of the [d]seductive harlot,
(B)The mistress of sorceries,
Who sells nations through her harlotries,
And families through her sorceries.

“Behold, I am (C)against you,” says the Lord of hosts;
(D)“I will lift your skirts over your face,
I will show the nations your nakedness,
And the kingdoms your shame.
I will cast abominable filth upon you,
Make you (E)vile,[e]
And make you (F)a spectacle.
It shall come to pass that all who look upon you
(G)Will flee from you, and say,
(H)‘Nineveh is laid waste!
(I)Who will bemoan her?’
Where shall I seek comforters for you?”

(J)Are you better than (K)No[f] Amon
That was situated by the [g]River,
That had the waters around her,
Whose rampart was the sea,
Whose wall was the sea?
Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength,
And it was boundless;
(L)Put and Lubim were [h]your helpers.
10 Yet she was carried away,
She went into captivity;
(M)Her young children also were dashed to pieces
(N)At the head of every street;
They (O)cast lots for her honorable men,
And all her great men were bound in chains.
11 You also will be (P)drunk;
You will be hidden;
You also will seek refuge from the enemy.

12 All your strongholds are (Q)fig trees with ripened figs:
If they are shaken,
They fall into the mouth of the eater.
13 Surely, (R)your people in your midst are women!
The gates of your land are wide open for your enemies;
Fire shall devour the (S)bars of your gates.

14 Draw your water for the siege!
(T)Fortify your strongholds!
Go into the clay and tread the mortar!
Make strong the brick kiln!
15 There the fire will devour you,
The sword will cut you off;
It will eat you up like a (U)locust.

Make yourself many—like the locust!
Make yourself many—like the swarming locusts!
16 You have multiplied your (V)merchants more than the stars of heaven.
The locust plunders and flies away.
17 (W)Your commanders are like swarming locusts,
And your generals like great grasshoppers,
Which camp in the hedges on a cold day;
When the sun rises they flee away,
And the place where they are is not known.

18 (X)Your shepherds slumber, O (Y)king of Assyria;
Your nobles rest in the dust.
Your people are (Z)scattered on the mountains,
And no one gathers them.
19 Your injury has no healing,
(AA)Your wound is severe.
(AB)All who hear news of you
Will clap their hands over you,
For upon whom has not your wickedness passed continually?

Nineves övermod och straff

(A) Ve dig, du blodstad,

    full av lögn, fylld av våld,
    du som aldrig slutar plundra!
(B) Hör, piskor smäller!
        Hör, vagnshjul dånar!
    Hästar jagar fram,
        vagnar rullar i väg.
Ryttare stormar fram,
    svärden ljungar
        och spjuten blixtrar.
    Slagna i mängd och högar av lik,
        det är ingen ände på döda,
            man stupar över döda kroppar.

Allt sker för hennes stora otukt,
    den vackra horan[a],
        häxkonsternas mästarinna,
    hon som sålde folken
        genom sin otukt
    och folkstammar
        genom sina häxkonster.

(C) Se, jag ska vända mig mot dig,
        säger Herren Sebaot.
    Jag ska lyfta upp ditt mantelsläp
        över ditt ansikte
    och låta folken se din nakenhet
        och kungariken din skam.
Jag ska kasta vidriga ting över dig,
    låta dig bli föraktad
        och göra dig till åtlöje.
Och det ska ske
    att var och en som ser dig
        ska fly från dig och säga:
    ”Nineve är ödelagt,
        vem har medlidande
            med henne?”
    Var kan jag finna tröstare åt dig?

(D) Är du bättre än No-Amon[b]
    som tronade
        vid Nilens strömmar?
    Vatten omgav henne,
        hon hade havet till vall
            och vatten till mur.
(E) Nubien och Egypten
        var hennes oändliga styrka,
    Put[c] och Libyen var hennes hjälp.
10 Också hon fördes bort
        i landsflykt och fångenskap,
    även hennes barn blev krossade
        i alla gathörn.
    Man kastade lott
        om hennes ärade män,
    och alla hennes stormän
        fängslades med kedjor.

11 (F) Också du ska bli drucken
        och gömma dig,
    också du ska söka skydd
        mot fienden.
12 Alla dina fästen liknar fikonträd[d]
        med mogen frukt.
    När man skakar dem
        faller fikonen i munnen
            på den som vill äta.
13 (G) Se, ditt krigsfolk
        är som kvinnor.
    Ditt lands portar står vidöppna
        för dina fiender.
    Eld förtär dina bommar.

14 Ös upp vatten åt dig för belägringen
        och förstärk dina fästen.
    Stig ner i leran
        och trampa i murbruket.
    Gör tegelformen stark.
15 (H) Där ska elden förtära dig
        och svärdet utrota dig,
    det ska sluka dig som gräsmaskar[e],
        även om du är talrik
            som gräsmaskar
    och förökar dig som gräshoppor.
16 Du har fler köpmän
        än himlens stjärnor,
    men som gräsmaskar plundrar de
        och flyger sedan bort.
17 Dina furstar är som gräshoppor,
    dina befälhavare
        som gräshoppssvärmar.
    De stannar inom murarna
        när dagen är kall,
    men när solen kommer fram
        flyr de bort,
    och sedan vet ingen var de är.

18 (I) Dina herdar har somnat,
        du Assurs kung[f],
    dina förnäma män ligger i ro.
        Ditt folk är skingrat
            uppe på bergen,
    och ingen samlar ihop det.
19 (J) Det finns ingen läkedom
    för din skada,
        ditt sår är obotligt.
    Alla som hör vad som hänt dig
        klappar i händerna över dig,
    för vem har inte drabbats
        av din ständiga ondska?[g]
