Attack against Nineveh
2 One who scatters is coming up against you.(A)
Man the fortifications!
Watch the road!
Brace[a] yourself!
Summon all your strength!(B)
2 For the Lord will restore the majesty of Jacob,(C)
yes,[b] the majesty of Israel,
though ravagers have ravaged them(D)
and ruined their vine branches.(E)
3 The shields of his[c] warriors are dyed red;
the valiant men are dressed in scarlet.(F)
The fittings of the chariot flash like fire(G)
on the day of its battle preparations,
and the spears are brandished.
4 The chariots dash madly through the streets;
they rush around in the plazas.
They look like torches;
they dart back and forth like lightning.
5 He gives orders to his officers;
they stumble as they advance.
They race to its wall;
the protective shield is set in place.
6 The river gates are opened,
and the palace erodes away.(H)
7 Beauty[d] is stripped;[e]
she is carried away;
her ladies-in-waiting moan
like the sound of doves(I)
and beat their breasts.(J)
8 Nineveh has been like a pool of water
from her first days,[f]
but they are fleeing.
“Stop! Stop!” they cry,
but no one turns back.
9 “Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold!” (K)
There is no end to the treasure,
an abundance of every precious thing.(L)
10 Desolation, decimation, devastation!
Hearts melt,(M)
knees tremble,(N)
insides churn,(O)
every face grows pale!(P)
11 Where is the lions’ lair,(Q)
or the feeding ground of the young lions,
where the lion and lioness prowled,
and the lion’s cub,
with nothing to frighten them away?(R)
12 The lion mauled whatever its cubs needed
and strangled prey for its lionesses.
It filled up its dens with the kill,
and its lairs with mauled prey.(S)
13 Beware, I am against you.(T)
This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies.
I will make your chariots go up in smoke,[g]
and the sword will devour your young lions.(U)
I will cut off your prey from the earth,
and the sound of your messengers
will never be heard again.(V)

De verwoesting van Ninevé
2 De vernietiger[a] komt eraan, Ninevé! Bewaak je stad! Verdedig je wegen! Doe je zwaard om! Bewapen je met alles wat je hebt! 2 Want de Heer gaat het land Israël herstellen, tot het er weer zo mooi en goed zal zijn als vroeger. Want plunderaars hebben het land helemaal leeggeplunderd en alle wijnstruiken vernield.
3 De schilden van de helden van je vijand zijn rood. Ze dragen rode kleren. De strijdwagens schitteren als brandende fakkels. De vijand maakt zich klaar voor de strijd. De speren worden klaargezet. 4 De strijdwagens razen over de weg. Ze vliegen over de vlakte. Ze schitteren als fakkels. Snel als de bliksem flitsen ze voorbij.
5 De koning van Assur verzamelt zijn helden. Ze struikelen in hun haast om op de muur te komen. Snel zetten ze hun verdediging klaar. 6 Maar de dijken langs de rivier gaan stuk en het water stroomt door de gaten. Door het water wordt de burcht vernield. 7 De strijd is beslist: Ninevé wordt leeggeplunderd. De meisjes klagen als koerende duiven. Ze wringen hun handen van verdriet. 8 Ninevé is veranderd in een vijver vol water. De bewoners vluchten weg. "Blijf! Verdedig je!" wordt er nog geroepen. Maar niemand komt terug.
9 "Pak het zilver! Neem het goud mee!" Er komt geen eind aan de hoeveelheid goud en zilver. Er is een overvloed aan allerlei kostbaarheden. 10 De stad wordt leeggeroofd, helemaal leeggeroofd en verwoest. De mensen staan daar, bang, met knikkende knieën, met pijn in hun buik en met witte gezichten. 11 Ninevé, je was eerst als een hol vol dappere leeuwen. Leeuwen die nergens bang voor waren. Maar wat is er van je over? 12 Waar is nu die leeuw die roofde voor zijn jongen, die doodde voor zijn leeuwinnen, die zijn hol vulde met geroofde schatten en prooi? 13 Let op, Ik ga je straffen, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers. Ik verbrand je strijdwagens. Ik dood je leeuwen: je helden. Ik vernietig je buit. Je zal geen boodschappers meer uitsturen naar andere landen.

2 O destruidor está já diante de ti; guarda tu a fortaleza, observa o caminho, esforça os lombos, fortalece muito o teu poder. 2 Porque o Senhor trará outra vez a excelência de Jacó, como a excelência de Israel; porque os que despejam os despejaram e corromperam os seus sarmentos. 3 Os escudos dos seus valentes estarão vermelhos, os homens valorosos, escarlates, os carros, como fogo de tochas no dia da sua preparação, e as lanças se sacudirão terrivelmente. 4 Os carros se enfurecerão nas praças, chocar-se-ão pelas ruas; o seu parecer é como o de tochas, correrão como relâmpagos.
5 Este se lembrará das suas riquezas; eles, porém, tropeçarão na sua marcha, apresentar-se-ão no muro, quando o amparo for preparado. 6 As portas do rio se abrirão, e o palácio se derreterá. 7 E Huzabe está descoberta; será levada cativa, e as suas servas a acompanharão, gemendo como pombas, batendo em seu peito. 8 Nínive, desde que existe, tem sido como um tanque de águas; elas, porém, fogem agora. Parai, parai, clamar-se-á; mas ninguém olhará para trás. 9 Saqueai a prata, saqueai o ouro, porque não tem termo o provimento, abastança há de todo gênero de móveis apetecíveis. 10 Vazia, e esgotada, e devastada ficará; e derrete-se o coração, e tremem os joelhos, e em todos os lombos há dor; e os rostos de todos eles empalidecem.
11 Onde está, agora, o covil dos leões e as pastagens dos leõezinhos, onde passeava o leão velho e o filhote do leão, sem haver ninguém que os espantasse? 12 O leão arrebatava o que bastava para os seus filhotes, e estrangulava a presa para as suas leoas, e enchia de presas as suas cavernas e os seus covis, de rapina. 13 Eis que eu estou contra ti, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, e queimarei na fumaça os teus carros, e a espada devorará os teus leõezinhos, e arrancarei da terra a tua presa, e não se ouvirá mais a voz dos teus embaixadores.
