The Destruction of Nineveh

He[a] who scatters has come up before your face.
Man the fort!
Watch the road!
Strengthen your flanks!
Fortify your power mightily.

For the Lord will restore the excellence of Jacob
Like the excellence of Israel,
For the emptiers have emptied them out
And ruined their vine branches.

The shields of his mighty men are made red,
The valiant men are in scarlet.
The chariots come with flaming torches
In the day of his preparation,
And [b]the spears are brandished.

11 (A)My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor detest His correction;
12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects,
(B)Just as a father the son in whom he delights.

13 (C)Happy is the man who finds wisdom,
And the man who gains understanding;
14 (D)For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver,
And her gain than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies,
And (E)all the things you may desire cannot compare with her.
16 (F)Length of days is in her right hand,
In her left hand riches and honor.
17 (G)Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace.
18 She is (H)a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who [a]retain her.

19 (I)The Lord by wisdom founded the earth;
By understanding He established the heavens;
20 By His knowledge the depths were (J)broken up,
And clouds drop down the dew.

15 But (A)I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for (B)it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void. 16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for (C)necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this willingly, (D)I have a reward; but if against my will, (E)I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What is my reward then? That (F)when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel [a]of Christ without charge, that I (G)may not abuse my authority in the gospel.

Serving All Men

19 For though I am (H)free from all men, (I)I have made myself a servant to all, (J)that I might win the more; 20 and (K)to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the [b]law, that I might win those who are under the law; 21 (L)to (M)those who are without law, as without law (N)(not being without [c]law toward God, but under [d]law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; 22 (O)to the weak I became [e]as weak, that I might win the weak. (P)I have become all things to all men, (Q)that I might by all means save some. 23 Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.

Striving for a Crown

24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? (R)Run in such a way that you may [f]obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize [g]is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for (S)an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: (T)not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 (U)But I discipline my body and (V)bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become (W)disqualified.
