¹⁰ Like thorns they are entangled;
    like drunkards they are drunk;
    they are consumed like dry straw.^(A)

⁴ The best of them is like a brier,
    the most upright of them a thorn hedge.
The day of their^[a] sentinels, of their^[b] punishment, has come;
    now their confusion is at hand.^(A)

¹¹ You also will be drunken;
    you will go into hiding;^[a]
you will seek
    a refuge from the enemy.^(A)

²⁴ Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours the stubble
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flame,
so their root will become rotten,
    and their blossom go up like dust,
for they have rejected the instruction of the Lord of hosts
    and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.^(A)

⁵⁷ I will make her officials and her sages drunk,
    also her governors, her deputies, and her warriors;
they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and never wake,
    says the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.^(A)

⁶ But the godless^[a] are all like thorns that are thrown away,
    for they cannot be picked up with the hand;^(A)
7 to touch them one uses an iron bar
    or the shaft of a spear.
    And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot.^[b]
