¹⁰ His enemies, tangled like thornbushes
    and staggering like drunks,
    will be burned up like dry stubble in a field.

¹¹ And you, Nineveh, will also stagger like a drunkard.
    You will hide for fear of the attacking enemy.

¹⁸ This wickedness is like a brushfire.
    It burns not only briers and thorns
but also sets the forests ablaze.
    Its burning sends up clouds of smoke.

²⁴ Therefore, just as fire licks up stubble
    and dry grass shrivels in the flame,
so their roots will rot
    and their flowers wither.
For they have rejected the law of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies;
    they have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

⁶ But the godless are like thorns to be thrown away,
    for they tear the hand that touches them.
⁷ One must use iron tools to chop them down;
    they will be totally consumed by fire.”

³⁹ And while they lie inflamed with all their wine,
    I will prepare a different kind of feast for them.
I will make them drink until they fall asleep,
    and they will never wake up again,”
    says the Lord.
