Asedio y saqueo de Nínive
2 El destructor ha subido contra ti. Guarda el baluarte, observa el camino, cíñete la cintura, esfuérzate mucho. 2 El SEÑOR restaurará la exuberancia de Jacob como la exuberancia de Israel, aunque los saqueadores los saqueen y estropeen sus ramas. 3 Los escudos de sus valientes están enrojecidos; sus valientes están vestidos de escarlata. En el día de su preparación, sus carros de guerra son como fuego de antorchas y los jinetes[a] se estremecen. 4 Sus carros se movilizan alocadamente en las calles y se desplazan de un lado a otro en las plazas. Parecen antorchas; como relámpagos corren de un lado a otro.
5 Se dará aviso a sus valientes y ellos acudirán atropellándose. Se apresurarán hacia sus muros y se alistará la cubierta de escudos. 6 Las compuertas de los canales habrán sido abiertas y el palacio quedará arrasado. 7 La reina será sacada y llevada en cautividad. Sus criadas gemirán como palomas y se golpearán el pecho.
8 Nínive ha sido, desde tiempos antiguos, como un estanque de aguas; pero ahora estas huyen. “¡Deténganse, deténganse!”. Pero nadie vuelve atrás.
9 ¡Saqueen la plata, saqueen el oro! ¡No tienen límites la calidad y el peso de todos los objetos preciosos! 10 ¡Desolación, devastación y destrucción! Los corazones desfallecen, las rodillas tiemblan, los lomos se estremecen; las caras de todos palidecen.
11 ¿Dónde está, pues, la guarida de los leones y la cueva[b] de los leoncillos, donde se cobijaban el león, la leona y los cachorros, sin que hubiera quien los atemorizara? 12 El león destrozaba para sus cachorros y estrangulaba para sus leonas. Llenaba de presa sus cavernas; y su guarida, de rapiña.
13 “He aquí que yo estoy contra ti, dice el SEÑOR de los Ejércitos. Encenderé y reduciré a humo tus carros, y la espada devorará a tus leoncillos. Raeré tu presa de la tierra y nunca más se volverá a escuchar la voz de tus mensajeros”.

De verwoesting van Ninevé
2 De vernietiger[a] komt eraan, Ninevé! Bewaak je stad! Verdedig je wegen! Doe je zwaard om! Bewapen je met alles wat je hebt! 2 Want de Heer gaat het land Israël herstellen, tot het er weer zo mooi en goed zal zijn als vroeger. Want plunderaars hebben het land helemaal leeggeplunderd en alle wijnstruiken vernield.
3 De schilden van de helden van je vijand zijn rood. Ze dragen rode kleren. De strijdwagens schitteren als brandende fakkels. De vijand maakt zich klaar voor de strijd. De speren worden klaargezet. 4 De strijdwagens razen over de weg. Ze vliegen over de vlakte. Ze schitteren als fakkels. Snel als de bliksem flitsen ze voorbij.
5 De koning van Assur verzamelt zijn helden. Ze struikelen in hun haast om op de muur te komen. Snel zetten ze hun verdediging klaar. 6 Maar de dijken langs de rivier gaan stuk en het water stroomt door de gaten. Door het water wordt de burcht vernield. 7 De strijd is beslist: Ninevé wordt leeggeplunderd. De meisjes klagen als koerende duiven. Ze wringen hun handen van verdriet. 8 Ninevé is veranderd in een vijver vol water. De bewoners vluchten weg. "Blijf! Verdedig je!" wordt er nog geroepen. Maar niemand komt terug.
9 "Pak het zilver! Neem het goud mee!" Er komt geen eind aan de hoeveelheid goud en zilver. Er is een overvloed aan allerlei kostbaarheden. 10 De stad wordt leeggeroofd, helemaal leeggeroofd en verwoest. De mensen staan daar, bang, met knikkende knieën, met pijn in hun buik en met witte gezichten. 11 Ninevé, je was eerst als een hol vol dappere leeuwen. Leeuwen die nergens bang voor waren. Maar wat is er van je over? 12 Waar is nu die leeuw die roofde voor zijn jongen, die doodde voor zijn leeuwinnen, die zijn hol vulde met geroofde schatten en prooi? 13 Let op, Ik ga je straffen, zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers. Ik verbrand je strijdwagens. Ik dood je leeuwen: je helden. Ik vernietig je buit. Je zal geen boodschappers meer uitsturen naar andere landen.

2 [a]An attacker(A) advances against you, Nineveh.
Guard the fortress,
watch the road,
brace yourselves,
marshal all your strength!
2 The Lord will restore(B) the splendor(C) of Jacob
like the splendor of Israel,
though destroyers have laid them waste
and have ruined their vines.
3 The shields of the soldiers are red;
the warriors are clad in scarlet.(D)
The metal on the chariots flashes
on the day they are made ready;
the spears of juniper are brandished.[b]
4 The chariots(E) storm through the streets,
rushing back and forth through the squares.
They look like flaming torches;
they dart about like lightning.
5 Nineveh summons her picked troops,
yet they stumble(F) on their way.
They dash to the city wall;
the protective shield is put in place.
6 The river gates(G) are thrown open
and the palace collapses.
7 It is decreed[c] that Nineveh
be exiled and carried away.
Her female slaves moan(H) like doves
and beat on their breasts.(I)
8 Nineveh is like a pool
whose water is draining away.
“Stop! Stop!” they cry,
but no one turns back.
9 Plunder the silver!
Plunder the gold!
The supply is endless,
the wealth from all its treasures!
10 She is pillaged, plundered, stripped!
Hearts melt,(J) knees give way,
bodies tremble, every face grows pale.(K)

The Attack of the Enemy
2 The enemy who will scatter you is advancing against you! Guard the rampart! Watch the road! Prepare for battle! Muster all your great strength! 2 For the Lord is about to restore the majesty of Jacob, as well as the majesty of Israel, even though their enemies have plundered them completely and have destroyed their vines.
3 The shields of the mighty warriors are dyed red.
The soldiers are dressed in scarlet garments.
The steel fittings[a] of the chariots shine like fire on the day of battle.
The soldiers shake their spears.[b]
4 The chariots race wildly through the streets.
They rush back and forth in the city squares.
They look like lightning.
They dart about like flashes of lightning.
5 The commander[c] gives orders to his elite troops.
They fall over each other as they advance.
They rush to the city wall.
They set up the protective canopy over the battering ram.
6 The gates that hold back the river are opened,
and the palace is washed away.
7 She is stripped and is led away.
Her slave girls moan like doves
while they beat their breasts.[d]
8 Nineveh[e] was like a pool of water from her beginning,[f]
but now her people are running away.
She cries out, “Stop! Stop!” but no one turns back.
9 Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold!
There is no end to the treasure.
There are riches of every kind of precious thing.
10 Destruction, devastation, and desolation!
Their hearts faint, their knees tremble,
every stomach churns, and each face turns pale!
11 What has become of the lions’ lair and the feeding place for young lions, where the lion, lioness, and lion’s cub prowled with nothing to fear? 12 The lion tore apart as much prey as his cubs needed and strangled prey to provide food for his lionesses. He filled his lairs with prey and his dens with torn flesh.
13 Beware! I am against you, declares the Lord of Armies. I will burn up your chariots in smoke. The sword will devour your young lions. You will no longer ravage the land. The voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.
