¹⁷ Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ^18 (A)“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land to which I bring you, ¹⁹ then it will be, when you eat of ^(B)the bread of the land, that you shall offer up a heave offering to the Lord. ^20 (C)You shall offer up a cake of the first of your ground meal as a heave offering; as ^(D)a heave offering of the threshing floor, so shall you offer it up. ²¹ Of the first of your ground meal you shall give to the Lord a heave offering throughout your generations.

Laws Concerning Unintentional Sin

^22 (E)‘If you sin unintentionally, and do not observe all these commandments which the Lord has spoken to Moses— ²³ all that the Lord has commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day the Lord gave commandment and onward throughout your generations— ²⁴ then it will be, ^(F)if it is unintentionally committed, ^[a]without the knowledge of the congregation, that the whole congregation shall offer one young bull as a burnt offering, as a sweet aroma to the Lord, ^(G)with its grain offering and its drink offering, according to the ordinance, and ^(H)one kid of the goats as a sin offering. ^25 (I)So the priest shall make atonement for the whole congregation of the children of Israel, and it shall be forgiven them, for it was unintentional; they shall bring their offering, an offering made by fire to the Lord, and their sin offering before the Lord, for their unintended sin. ²⁶ It shall be forgiven the whole congregation of the children of Israel and the stranger who dwells among them, because all the people did it unintentionally.

²⁷ ‘And ^(J)if a person sins unintentionally, then he shall bring a female goat in its first year as a sin offering. ^28 (K)So the priest shall make atonement for the person who sins unintentionally, when he sins unintentionally before the Lord, to make atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him. ^29 (L)You shall have one law for him who sins unintentionally, for him who is native-born among the children of Israel and for the stranger who dwells among them.

Law Concerning Presumptuous Sin

^30 (M)‘But the person who does anything ^[b]presumptuously, whether he is native-born or a stranger, that one ^[c]brings reproach on the Lord, and he shall be ^[d]cut off from among his people. ³¹ Because he has ^(N)despised the word of the Lord, and has broken His commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; his ^[e]guilt shall be upon him.’ ”

Penalty for Violating the Sabbath^(O)

³² Now while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, ^(P)they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. ³³ And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation. ³⁴ They put him ^(Q)under guard, because it had not been explained what should be done to him.

³⁵ Then the Lord said to Moses, ^(R)“The man must surely be put to death; all the congregation shall ^(S)stone him with stones outside the camp.” ³⁶ So, as the Lord commanded Moses, all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones, and he died.

Tassels on Garments

³⁷ Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ³⁸ “Speak to the children of Israel: Tell ^(T)them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a blue thread in the tassels of the corners. ³⁹ And you shall have the tassel, that you may look upon it and ^(U)remember all the commandments of the Lord and do them, and that you ^(V)may not ^(W)follow the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined, ⁴⁰ and that you may remember and do all My commandments, and be ^(X)holy for your God. ⁴¹ I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the Lord your God.”

Rebellion Against Moses and Aaron

16 Now ^(Y)Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with ^(Z)Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men; ² and they rose up before Moses with some of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty leaders of the congregation, ^(AA)representatives of the congregation, men of renown. ^3 (AB)They gathered together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “You ^[f]take too much upon yourselves, for ^(AC)all the congregation is holy, every one of them, ^(AD)and the Lord is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord?”

⁴ So when Moses heard it, he ^(AE)fell on his face; ⁵ and he spoke to Korah and all his company, saying, “Tomorrow morning the Lord will show who is ^(AF)His and who is ^(AG)holy,^[g] and will cause him to come near to Him. That one whom He chooses He will cause to ^(AH)come near to Him. ⁶ Do this: Take censers, Korah and all your company; ⁷ put fire in them and put incense in them before the Lord tomorrow, and it shall be that the man whom the Lord chooses is the holy one. You take too much upon yourselves, you sons of Levi!”

⁸ Then Moses said to Korah, “Hear now, you sons of Levi: ⁹ Is it ^(AI)a small thing to you that the God of Israel has ^(AJ)separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself, to do the work of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the congregation to serve them; ¹⁰ and that He has brought you near to Himself, you and all your brethren, the sons of Levi, with you? And are you seeking the priesthood also? ¹¹ Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against the Lord. ^(AK)And what is Aaron that you complain against him?”

¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come up! ¹³ Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of ^(AL)a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you should ^(AM)keep acting like a prince over us? ¹⁴ Moreover ^(AN)you have not brought us into ^(AO)a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up!”

¹⁵ Then Moses was very angry, and said to the Lord, ^(AP)“Do not ^[h]respect their offering. ^(AQ)I have not taken one donkey from them, nor have I hurt one of them.”

¹⁶ And Moses said to Korah, “Tomorrow, you and all your company be present ^(AR)before the Lord—you and they, as well as Aaron. ¹⁷ Let each take his censer and put incense in it, and each of you bring his censer before the Lord, two hundred and fifty censers; both you and Aaron, each with his censer.” ¹⁸ So every man took his censer, put fire in it, laid incense on it, and stood at the door of the tabernacle of meeting with Moses and Aaron. ¹⁹ And Korah gathered all the congregation against them at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. Then ^(AS)the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.

²⁰ And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, ^21 (AT)“Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may ^(AU)consume them in a moment.”

²² Then they ^(AV)fell^[i] on their faces, and said, “O God, ^(AW)the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and You be angry with all the ^(AX)congregation?”

²³ So the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁴ “Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘Get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.’ ”

²⁵ Then Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. ²⁶ And he spoke to the congregation, saying, ^(AY)“Depart now from the tents of these wicked men! Touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins.” ²⁷ So they got away from around the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram; and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, their sons, and their little ^(AZ)children.

²⁸ And Moses said: ^(BA)“By this you shall know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them ^(BB)of my own will. ²⁹ If these men die naturally like all men, or if they are ^(BC)visited by the common fate of all men, then the Lord has not sent me. ³⁰ But if the Lord creates ^(BD)a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they ^(BE)go down alive into the pit, then you will understand that these men have rejected the Lord.”

^31 (BF)Now it came to pass, as he finished speaking all these words, that the ground split apart under them, ³² and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and ^(BG)all the men with Korah, with all their goods. ³³ So they and all those with them went down alive into the pit; the earth closed over them, and they perished from among the assembly. ³⁴ Then all Israel who were around them fled at their cry, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up also!”

³⁵ And ^(BH)a fire came out from the Lord and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering incense.

³⁶ Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ³⁷ “Tell Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, to pick up the censers out of the blaze, for ^(BI)they are holy, and scatter the fire some distance away. ³⁸ The censers of ^(BJ)these men who sinned ^[j]against their own souls, let them be made into hammered plates as a covering for the altar. Because they presented them before the Lord, therefore they are holy; ^(BK)and they shall be a sign to the children of Israel.” ³⁹ So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned up had presented, and they were hammered out as a covering on the altar, ⁴⁰ to be a ^[k]memorial to the children of Israel ^(BL)that no outsider, who is not a descendant of Aaron, should come near to offer incense before the Lord, that he might not become like Korah and his companions, just as the Lord had said to him through Moses.

Jesus Faces Pilate^(A)

15 Immediately, ^(B)in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and ^(C)delivered Him to Pilate. ^2 (D)Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”

³ And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He ^(E)answered nothing. ^4 (F)Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things ^[a]they testify against You!” ^5 (G)But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.

Taking the Place of Barabbas^(H)

⁶ Now ^(I)at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested. ⁷ And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion. ⁸ Then the multitude, ^[b]crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them. ⁹ But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” ¹⁰ For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

¹¹ But ^(J)the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them. ¹² Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the ^(K)King of the Jews?”

¹³ So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”

¹⁴ Then Pilate said to them, “Why, ^(L)what evil has He done?”

But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”

^15 (M)So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be ^(N)crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus^(O)

^16 (P)Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called ^[c]Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. ¹⁷ And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, ¹⁸ and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” ¹⁹ Then they ^(Q)struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. ²⁰ And when they had ^(R)mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

The King on a Cross^(S)

^21 (T)Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. ^22 (U)And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. ^23 (V)Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. ²⁴ And when they crucified Him, ^(W)they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.

²⁵ Now ^(X)it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. ²⁶ And ^(Y)the inscription of His ^[d]accusation was written above:

THE KING OF THE JEWS.

^27 (Z)With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. ^28 [e]So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ^(AA)“And He was numbered with the transgressors.”

²⁹ And ^(AB)those who passed by blasphemed Him, ^(AC)wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! ^(AD)You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, ³⁰ save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”

³¹ Likewise the chief priests also, ^(AE)mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved ^(AF)others; Himself He cannot save. ³² Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and ^[f]believe.”

Even ^(AG)those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.

Jesus Dies on the Cross^(AH)

³³ Now ^(AI)when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. ³⁴ And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, ^(AJ)“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

³⁵ Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” ³⁶ Then ^(AK)someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and ^(AL)offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”

^37 (AM)And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.

³⁸ Then ^(AN)the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. ³⁹ So ^(AO)when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that ^[g]He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”

^40 (AP)There were also women looking on ^(AQ)from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, ⁴¹ who also ^(AR)followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb^(AS)

^42 (AT)Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, ⁴³ Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who ^(AU)was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁴⁴ Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. ⁴⁵ So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. ^46 (AV)Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. ⁴⁷ And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.
